Mike Anderson - Recruiting, Coaching, Etc.

See the Appelwhite thread in the Recruiting Forum wrt to the above (spoiler alert, we didn't get him, sucks, it would have been a great get but we will be fine anyway).

The other off-topic posts in this thread (about Fordham, the school not our missing poster) have been moved to "Around College Basketball" since even though they started with some link to this thread, they clearly went in a more "around college basketball" direction.

This would be after a bunch of 1950s-era basketball posts had to be forked off into their own thread (I resisted the temptation to name that one "For Alta Cockers Only").

Please, please try to stay on topic.  The temptation to wander is great, but resist you must.

I too saw it. It was really great pub for SJU showing only himself Coach Few and Coach Izzo.   Tremendous company that he is keeping company with.
Used to be 5 coaches on that list but now down to 3. Really proud of our coach.

In the beginning of the season it looked like he didn't have a shot of maintaining the streak, now it looks good.

No guarantee Izzo has winning record this year either.  Michigan State just lost by 30 to Iowa and are now 10-8 overall and 4-8 in Big 10.

Before we get too far ahead of ourselves, there is no guarentee that Coach Anderson has a winning recored this year. A month ago we all thought it was in doubt. One game at a time.

Don't think Mark Few has much to worry about on his streak unless Gonzaga changes conferences.

Even then I don't think he'd have much to worry about.

Let me preface by saying I think Mark Few is a great coach and has done as well as possible at Gonzaga. Having said that he took over a good program and made it better. CMA in every job he has had inherited a complete rebuild. Be it at UAB, Missouri, Arkansas and SJU he did not inherit an program on the upswing. All that to say I truly believe he has had the much more difficult task than Mark Few or Tom Izzo and his record is a tribute to the excellent coach he is.
As I said early on in his tenure he has never been at a program that is surrounded by a fertile recruiting ground , that is until he got to SJU. He has laid the foundation for good recruiting relationships these past 20 months ( not even ), and continues to do so. With good roster continuity and improved recruiting I see no reason for him to ever be below 500.
best of luck to CMA.

I would posit that it's much more difficult to recruit here than at Arkansas or even Missouri.

Agree with everything you said, but I would also say that Few has built a nationally elite program out of a good program left to him by Dan Fitzgerald and Dan Monson.    Few has won less than 25 games only once at Gonzaga (23-11) and made the NCAA's every season (except 2020 when there was no tournament).

Mark Few, Jay Wright, Rick Pitino, Coach K, and a few others have lifted good programs to nationally elite status.   They are in a different breath and almost any other coach in America.

CMA took over a program that essentially returned one valuable rotation player, but it also was a program that had made the NCAAs two of the previous 6 years.   I believe he has done an excellent job but let's not forget that at 1-6, the predominant attitude towards him on redmen.com was overwhelmingly negative.   I am totally convinced that Anderson may take out program to where it hasn't been in a very long time.

Constructing a sustainable roster year over year is a challenge for most coaches, and where many fail.   Norm Roberts left Lavin with a team of seniors and nothing else, resulting in Lavin season #2 not going so well.   Lavin left Mullin with Obekpa (who bolted), and Jordan (who was academically ineligible).    With a team of underclassmen (plus Dunn and Williams), CMA is poised to build a powerful team by year 4 if he recruits well.    By year 4, Jarvis, Roberts, Lavin, and Mullin were all shot in terms of recruiting.   I had not thought of that before, but that's sort of startling.

Time for Greg to step up hopefully on both ends of court, need his spark;

Zach B

"St. John's coach Mike Anderson tells me Greg Williams Jr. has looked more like himself in recent practices. Thinks you'll see more of him starting tomorrow. #sjubb's third-leading scorer who has been slowed by a back injury."

I though Zach B's article from earlier in the year really hit the head on the nail with how important Greg Williams is to this team. Really need him to be that third guy behind Julian & Posh to get this team over the hump. An active and engaged GW will improve our D, take some pressure of JC & Posh with his ability to slash, handle and his improved jumper to space the floor.

Brandon Tierney on CMA recruiting:

Mike Anderson has already proven his detractors (upon being hired) wrong. This roster already has several very good BE players, one of whom who could win conf POY, another who will win FOY.

Mike on Julianimproved throughout the season…“I think he is just learning. He is a sophomore, so teams are coming at him. They are doubling, tripling, and gapping him, but the thing I like about today is that he moved without the ball, got some shots in transition, and there are times where he is a decoy. They come up on him, so all of a sudden, Marcellus [Earlington] is wide-open taking shots, Greg [Williams Jr.] is wide-open. The thing I like about it is you continue to see him impacting the game defensively, whether it is blocking shots, making guys change direction. He is growing as a player and that is the beauty of it – he is impacting the game even when he is not scoring.”
