Mike Anderson - Recruiting, Coaching, Etc.

Probably a Bryson DeChambeau fan... :silly:

Wow never thought in my life my HS alma mater would ever have a basketball player that played at SJU. I hope he turns out to be a stud lol.

Those conditioning sessions do not look like a whole lot of fun - but they should pay off down the road.

That clip brought back terrible memories from about 50 years ago. I still tremble when I have to walk on stairs

Having CMA as coach is the first time as a SJ fan where players always look exhausted and drenched in their own sweat 24/7. Maybe other coaches just didn't record as many vids and that makes it skewed, but they seem to be working their butts off. Really not trying to take a shot at Mullin here, but can't help but notice difference in philosophy/work ethic. Was told by player he used to show up late to practice and leave early sometimes. Also kind of treated the kids like pros instead of college kids that needed the structure and guidance. CMA seems like he gets up at 4 AM and would be outside the players' dorm room with a fog horn if they were 5 seconds late. Hopefully us finally doing the little things from the ground up to build back to being a formidable program will pay off.

It’s nice to have us so involved recruiting so many players. CMA and staff are building the program from the ground up, WITH INTEGRITY. We will have a basketball program to be proud of for a long time. Of course, none of what CMA and staff do would be possible without our Great AD Mike Cragg.

Videos like these show why players improve throughout the season under a staff like ours. By putting in the work Coach Anderson requires you can only get better. If you don’t put in the work you won’t survive here. He always mentions being a blue collar player. The 98/99 team On the webinar spoke about how the city embraced them bc they played W the city edge.

I can remember arguing with many of our fans about kids not hustling for our previous 2 coaches. I remember hearing things like "they're playing a lot of minutes per game, etc". Granted some of those teams didn't go deep, but at the same time I don't ever remember thinking that those kids were busting a gut in practice, like CMA's kids are. We probably won't be the best team in the Big East this year, but I fully expect that we will be the best conditioned and the hardest working team this year.

I agree, and players putting in that kind of work is a product of two things, the demands and expectations of the coaching staff coupled with the ability of that staff to earn the respect of the players so they commit to meeting same AND the quality of individual that staff recruits. This staff obviously earned that respect from, not all, but the overwhelming majority of the players last year regardless of who recruited them.

Being in tremendous shape helps you play tremendous defense, though, which helps you win even without these better players who you are looking for.

A few years way from top 25?
We were playing tough, successful ball at the season's end - No one knows if it will be "a few years" or more or less. But - repeating myself - I like what Mike Anderson and Mike Craig are doing and I would not be surprised if we are a top 25 team give or take a little (20 - 30) - next season - if there is a next season.
Again, I like the direction of the program.

"Lead by example". When the staff is busting their butt, it's a lot easier to the players to do so. And that hold true in all walks of life, not just sports. I know I'm not telling you anything that you don't already know. Good to have to back. Post more.

I know some on this board disagree, but it also helps you shoot better. Stronger legs, more upper body strength and increased stamina helps tremendously with outside shooting IMO. And i say that from first hand experience.
