Mike Anderson - Recruiting, Coaching, Etc.

With Preseason NIT reportedly going to be held in a bubble in Orlando, Mike Anderson wouldn't say if St. John's still planned on participating. Considering quarantine guidelines in state, would seem unlikely. #sjubb

Too late to schedule our own NYC area bubble tournament with local teams?
People in the past have mentioned an all-NY preseason tournament. Now's probably as good a year as any.

Not too late. Teams are scrambling now. Chris Mack tweeted out saying Lville area was going to host a bubble and for teams interested to contact him.

Mike Anderson believes this team has the talent to make the NCAA Tournament. "That's the goal. That's the goal every year." #sjubb

Of his newcomers, Mike Anderson seemed most excited about GW grad transfer Arnaldo Toro. Presents a different dimension as a big man capable of scoring on the low block. He thinks all the new guys can contribute this year. #sjubb

Mike Anderson said St. John's has been ramping up workouts to point he's had a few full-team workouts and even some controlled scrimmages. But it's mostly been about skill development so far. #sjubb

Since St Johns began testing its players beginning of August, they’ve had one positive test, coach Mike Anderson said. He said everyone is in good health now. #sjubb

Per Ted Gustus;

I have been very impressed with @StJohnsBBall and Coach @Iron_MikeMA! From the time he recruited my nephew Rasheem Dunn, he has fulfilled everything he promised! From the AD @MikeCraggSJU to the staff, they are fighters and they will never give up, that’s for sure!

No one should be surprised about what Rasheem’s uncle is saying about CMA. CMA is the rare breed of coach who is honest in every aspect, hard working and cares about his players as athletes, students and most importantly human beings. He looks to prepare them for life and not just a four years of college. We are very Lucky to have him.

Spot on, North
CMA is the right coach at St John's at the right time

I'll take a coach who does more with less over one who does less with more every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

The only thing CMA needs to do is win games, which is what he does. The rest - recruits, attendance, cash flow, facilities, will follow.

Yep. Winning will overcome so many obstacles, both perceived and real.

I think Coach A is a pretty dapper dresser on the Sidelines . And , his clothes are impeccably tailored . He exudes Class .

And he exudes an ability to connect with and motivate his players and ( many if not most )
Fans!
He’s a winner notwithstanding what amount of charisma he may or may not possess.
Blessings to all.

Could care less if a coach has charisma(IE Lavin) or not. I could care less if the coach is a "nice guy" outwardly. Plenty of guys who were perceived as complete a-holes(IE Calhoun) who were/are great coaches. I care about one thing; how productive the kids are, both on and off the court.

I'll say this about CMA. I met him at a reception before last season and chatted for a little bit. He is warm and gracious, and certainly is careful about what he says. I said to him, "This is going to be a very rough season. I think the team wins 5-6 games tops in conference."

He didn't go for the bait and simply said in a confident tine, "We'll see about that!" Of course I was correct, but I loved his answer. HE wouldn't budge an inch before the first jump ball to concede that we wouldn't be a good team. His team responded the same way. We may have only won 5 games in conference, but because of CMA, by the end of the season we were a very tough out, and more importantly played well down the stretch without folding. He gets all the credit for that.

Of course the next hurdle is a lot tougher, getting to .500 in conference and above.
To sell more season tix we will need 4 star commits, lots of hype, better facilities, and some real success e.g. making the NCAA's out of nowhere at least...then winning a game or two the next year or year after. We all remember how the Lavin years (although an overall failure) got us crazy hyped and excited. Big name after big name recruit, 2nd ranked class in nation literally right there with blue bloods, ESPN coming to our midnight madness with guys like John Anderson. Getting big headlines. I think you also need a charismatic coach and I'll admit I do worry CMA is not charismatic or energetic enough. Programs become known for charismatic coaches...look at us with Lou, MSU with Izzo coming in on motorcycles at midnight madness, crazy Danny Hurley getting UConn hyped up again, Cooley being a comedian at PC, Jay Wright the GQ dapper don, etc. I hope we find out he is a damn good coach regardless obviously...just saying it helps.
It's funny how we can now look back on the Lavin years and say he had charisma. Maybe I'm mis-remembering, but how about the endless fluff quotes he'd give out after every game that would infuriate this board? We totally get that you don't think CMA is good enough for St. John's. Not sure how many different ways you can say it.

You know what you just did, right? Now expect a long-winded post about how he believes Anderson seems to be the "right man for the job," BUT he may not be the "right man for the job."

When Repole went on with Fatso, I was listening in the car, and hated to hear Mike F. call St. John's "a joke". What a jerk. I wish he never transferred in from So. Florida.

Glad in the end we ended up with CMA, he is a good man and a good coach, and I have a very good feeling about our prospects under his tutlege

All you had to do was watch CMA at his introductory press conference to see his charisma.
I'm thinking that Mike used to buy his electronics at "Crazy Eddie's" back in the day. He's not looking for charisma so much as he's looking for flash and attention.

Even so, as others have mentioned...we have been there and tried that (Lavin,Jarvis, Mullin) and yet here we still are.
Maybe we should try the Gonzaga method of hiring a good hoops coach who can recruit for his system and over achieve. Who can then use that success to recruit better players that fit that system as the program's reputation improves.

If only we could find a guy who has an exciting system with a proven track record of wining, who works his rear-end off, who values team play over selfish play, who coaches kids up and is more 'substance' than 'flash'...

I agree that we did try the flashy hires and they did not work. That's a fact. I'm just saying it helps sell tix and makes your brand more recognizable. CMA is dapper guy...I've seen his tailored suits. His wife seems very classy as well. Clearly a good family with strong values. CMA was our best bet after the first wave of candidates turned us down. He had a good first year overachieving a bit, however we still had our issues namely a real lack of shooters and bigs and relatively poor recruiting relative to our conference. So I don't think it's crazy to have some reservations. But glad he is our coach at the moment and I hope beyond hope he can get us turned around. The keys will be: 1) actually winning consistently and 2) turning that into better recruiting. If he can win consistently, they will come hopefully. Let's see if he can get us seriously on the bubble if not in the tourney soon. That would be a great sign.
