Mike Anderson - Recruiting, Coaching, Etc.

Do you really believe that a 4* shooting guard could not find playing time on the StJ’s roster next season?

There are 2 available scholarships on next years roster. Would you have me believe that 4* star recruits have not selected StJ’s this cycle because they are intimidated by the talent level ?
Yes. I believe a freshman would get limited minutes year one behind 2 senior shooting guards in gwill and cole.
He may think of himself as a shooting guard, but I can't imagine any scenario where Cole isn't our starting SF for the next two seasons.

This isn't high school. Talent matters more than class. What you are REALLY saying is you don't think they can land a freshman more talented than what they already have, that is different than simply saying NO freshman would play over SJU current roster. There are plenty that could.

Duke,
1. Be truthful ..... have you ever even seen incoming transfer Vince Cole play ? If not how can you pencil him in as a 2 year starter ?

2. Your spin that the reason St. John’s has thus far struck out with every 4* and all but one 3* high school recruit during this 2021 cycle is because the recruits are intimidated by StJohn’s returning talent apparently does not apply to other Big East teams since most other Big East teams have received commitments from recruits despite the fact they have higher performing sophomore and juniors on their rosters.

But none of those teams has the Duke!

Of course. If they land a 5 star one and done player then sure, he would get the nod. But we know what kind of kids are being recruiter here. And thise kids are not going to be good enough to knock off senior leaders like gwill and cole.

Pshh Otis didn't you hear, Mike Anderson was a really good coach 10 years ago, so no one should ever question him. Arkansas only let him go just because their new AD is a jerk.

Obviously these 4 and 5 star recruits are intimidated to come here because this team that every reputable CBB analyst in the world is picking to finish towards the bottom of the Big East is bursting at the seams with talent.

No big time SF recruit in their right mind would come here to sit behind the highly touted Vince Cole who was being recruited by like 3 or 4 middling power 6 schools. All of us on the board are convinced he's going to be a superstar because we've seen him play 4 minutes on a YouTube video.

I kind of get what The Duke is getting at though. One thing that seems of extreme importance to CMA is team chemistry. Having a freshman come in and from the start play big minutes over a senior Cole or others would surely cause some sort of rift. This is how transfers end up happening. Not saying there isn't a way to keep all the current kids happy and spread minutes around, but many high level recruits want to play right away to showcase themselves for the next level.

I get what you all are saying but my expectations have been lowered over the yrs. what will be nice if we just continue to get better each yr. obviously, pundits still putting us near the bottom of the Confr only winning and better recruiting Gets us elevated

I honestly don't know because I don't have ESPNJUCO like everyone else here does apparently. Based off youtube highlights, and looking at his stats I think he could be at least a solid player, but he could also struggle at this level. We don't know. I'd venture to guess he'll average around 10-11 PPG next year.

The blame for decades of poor management of SJU basketball program does not fall on Cragg and Anderson. Give them time to set things right.

PharmaD- USC Salk actually streamed a good number of their full games on YouTube last year. So if you want to watch Cole play some full games in dusty JUCO gyms there are plenty available. Here's a couple. Cole is #24.

Just realized the videos won't play on this site but the link below leads to USC Salk YouTube account which has a ton of full games once you get past players highlights. Whoever runs the account made it so you have to be on YouTube to watch.

Cole is legit. He was starting to pick up High Major interest around the time he committed to SJU. This staff knows the JUCO scene as well as anyone. SJU offered him before the start of his sophomore year. He then went on to put up a 50-40-90 campaign. I am glad we got him early.

I think he'll easily lead the team in scoring. Don't be shocked if he has some big games.

I won't be shocked if Cole is the next Walter Berry(ok, maybe a little shocked-but in a good way), the next Marco Bourgault or the next Bashir Ahmed. Point being, I pay very little attention to JUCO rankings, video clips, quotes from former or current coaches, words of so-called "experts", etc, and take a 'wait and see' approach to all these JUCO kids. Hopefully he can fill LJ's shoes to some degree. That's my hope. We'll see.

Any news on filling the last scholarship for this season? Is that still in a he staffs plans or will they save it for the 21 recruiting cycle?
