Mike Anderson - Recruiting, Coaching, Etc.
One of the little things I noticed about our Coach that likely goes unnoticed is David Caraher ‘s role on the team . If you look at it , it’s very interesting. Caraher was a Mullin recruit when Coach Anderson took over . David , at first glance , is probably not the type of Player that would fit Coach Anderson’s prototype as a Recruit . Coach could have counseled Caraher that he likely wasn’t going to be in the mix for playing time last year . Maybe he did or didn’t . It Doesn’t matter! Anyway , as last season unfolded Caraher did get valuable minutes , especially later in the Season as games became more important . Caraher is a heady type player , not a Skywalker or exceptional Athlete and , I think Coach found a place where David ‘s skills could be valuable and used him accordingly , including a few times with the game on the line . It appeared to me that Caraher was often a settling presence on the Court and got the Ball Movement in the flow that Anderson wanted . David will not be a star but , I thought it noteworthy that Anderson saw something in his game and used it . That’s a good Coach !
You are so right. CMA saw Caraher as a team player on the court and on the bench.

To be fair also Caraher was told what would he expected of him and he dropped crazy weight and became more athletic so he deserves a lot of credit himself

Carraher gives 100% hustle every second he's on the court. Anderson rewards Caraher for buying in and giving it his all, and uses it as a message to the other players that effort will be rewarded.

One more thing about Carraher that I mentioned a couple of times during the season. He plays better when he is mixing it up and getting banged around a bit. When he is sitting on the perimeter he is just meh. But a couple of times I saw him get ticked off like a no-call elbow to the face and then he went to another level. He doesn't look like a banger but he's got the mentality to thrive on it. I think he is kind of like Bootsy in that way. Bootsy was a big shot guy but what he was doing when he wasn't hitting big shots was mixing it up inside, getting offensive boards and he had the footwork/positioning and smarts to do it among much bigger players.

This could get siphoned off to a Caraher thread but there were many times last year he didn't play a lot. See game log below.

Its because he has severe limitations and CMA recognizes that where in certain matchups we were playing a man down. I would think this year there might be more of those situations where he has more of his 'own parts' to choose from.

yeah we'll move the Carraher stuff out of this thread but Just for fun, Carraher:
Games we won averaged 16+ minutes.
Games we lost averaged 13- minutes.

Then CMA sucks and he doesn’t know who to play.

I don't know if stats tell the whole story with Caraher. If you read this thread it would appear Caraher warrants minutes because he busts it on the court, does everything a coach asks for, and makes the most of limited talent. I see it a little differently. Towards the end of the season as Anderson relied on him more and more, Caraher responded to that confidence by raising his own confidence in himself. He is making shots, crisp passes, and playing with such confidence on offense that he was much more than a hustling mix-it-up, sacrifice his body type. Would not be surprised if his scoring average can end up in the 8 or 9 ppg.

What are the odds that Chris Mullin would have been hired today? I'd say about zero.

Yes, zero . . . because Cragg is here today and he already knows Mullin wasn't suited for the job.

I myself am very happy that CMA has decided to be our coach. Frankly I don’t know why he took this position. This program has very little going for it and in many respects it’s the bottom of the cellar in the Big East! Our facilities suck at best! NYC in no longer the furtile recruiting bed it once was. From an education prospective the university bleeds mediocrity, and the administrations continue to demonstrate their incompetence!
For those of you who think that Donovan would be remotely interested in this job are on some serious hallucinatory drugs! And please don’t tell me we play at MSG because I will scream! No we are darn fortunate to have CMA and I for one am glad we do!
