Mike Anderson - Recruiting, Coaching, Etc.

Norm's 2005 class: :
Anthony Mason Jr. (4 Star)
Ricky Torres (4 Star)
Aaron Spears (2 Star)
Tomas Jasiulonas (2 Star)

Lavin's 2011 Class:
Dom Pointer (4 Star)
Mo Harkless (4 star)
Amir Garrett (4 Star)
D'Angelo Harrison (4 Star)
Phil Greene (3 Star)

Mullin 2016 Class:
Shamorie Ponds (4 Star)
Richard Fraudenberg (4 Star)
Bashir Ahmed (4 Star)

The fact that Ricky Torres & Fraudenberg were rated 4 stars (if true, I didn't look it up) just reinforces the position of many here that rankings are often overrated.
As Jack Williams posted CMA will be judged on results both from a recruiting standpoint and overall. He was able to land Champ, Rutherford and Dunn late his first year all of whom exceeded expectations, especially Champ & Nick. As far as results overall, I think he slightly overachieved in his first year, especially losing one of our better players for much of the season.
I like the 2020 recruiting class. Posh is rated a 4 star by ESPN and Cole is definitely a 4 star talent with JUCO accomplishments as good or better than Ahmed (listed as a 4 star above). But as others have said we will be better able to judge this recruiting class after we see them play Big East games (assuming there are any to play). As far as 2021 class, I do expect we will wind up with at least one 4 star level talent, but we'll have a better idea on this class in April.
I am very comfortable with CMAs tendency to look for players who (i) fit his system, (ii) are high character kids and (iii) want to play a true team concept. That may mean we are less attractive to one and done types and that is fine with me. We'll get our share of 4 stars and more importantly kids that leave it all out there imho.[/quote]

Nice posts here ( but )
Please add to the players you mentioned above:
Earlington
Williams

Greetings SS&G - I was responding to a post regarding CMA's recruiting and thus referenced the 3 guys he recruited in 2019 as well as 2020 recruits. He didn't recruit Earlington & Williams, previous staff did. While CMA deserves kudos for the improvement those 2 made as sophomores, that is the topic for another post lol.

Sorry to sound like a broken record but CMA always says and does the right thing. The man is a real true leader in every sense of the word. Soft spoken but carries a big stick, humble, very articulate, respectful and caring of his players, his wife, takes a strong interest in politics without bashing any candidate, works like a Trojan. He is everything and more our floundering program could have ever asked for. I hope he gets to coach a good ten seasons or more at SJU. Too bad we got him at age 59.

The first one’s flashy threads are dependent on monetary donations from hopeful future alumni, so that’s out.

Second one has a percentage of effectiveness of over .900, we’ll all sign up for that!

Thank you and I enjoy your posts and philosophy.
The longer one lives the more his/her perspective changes. 59 is far from old and our Coach could coach for another decade or more - especially because he appears to workout and appears highly motivated to win.
I would venture that those - most - of we posters over 59 or over ( me ) do not feel “ old “ and know that productive years are ahead.
This is not a “ pipe dream “ or a fantasy - just wait and see when you’re the tender age of 59. It’s a reality.
All the best Coach Anderson and lets - eventually - go Storm...
Blessings to all!

2 weeks before early recruitment deadline: Recruit X, a very high four-star, nearly a 5. He's a lock for St John's, he and his whole family are life-long Johnnie fans.

2 days before: At the deadline, X will commit to St John's.

At the deadline: X will wait for spring to commit, but don't worry, he's in the bag for St John's.

2 weeks before spring deadline: X will wait until the deadline, but Dad is saying he's going to the Johnnies. He's a lock for sure.

The Big Day: X commits to Fl St. X's Dad says he was going to St John's, but 2 days ago Fl St (or Vill or UConn) offered.

Here's what I love about CMA.

It isn't lost on the players that here is a successful, educated black man who sees not only his role as a basketball coach, but as a mentor, leader, and educator. Our kids are fortunate to have him, as is the entire St. John's community. Obviously he sees them as far beyond basketball commodities, but as young men who can be successful and help change the world for the better. That's about as Vincentian as it gets.

I've seen X like a dozen times. They rock. Didn't know they were interested in STJ. Exene can't jump but John Doe is a legit 6'2". SHooting guard?

PS never shared a urinal but did get to hang with the band backstage at a YUGE punk show in San Bernadino in 2002.

Great to see them practicing this week.

McGriff's release kind of reminded me of Lonzo Ball's across the body motion.

One of the little things I noticed about our Coach that likely goes unnoticed is David Caraher ‘s role on the team . If you look at it , it’s very interesting. Caraher was a Mullin recruit when Coach Anderson took over . David , at first glance , is probably not the type of Player that would fit Coach Anderson’s prototype as a Recruit . Coach could have counseled Caraher that he likely wasn’t going to be in the mix for playing time last year . Maybe he did or didn’t . It Doesn’t matter! Anyway , as last season unfolded Caraher did get valuable minutes , especially later in the Season as games became more important . Caraher is a heady type player , not a Skywalker or exceptional Athlete and , I think Coach found a place where David ‘s skills could be valuable and used him accordingly , including a few times with the game on the line . It appeared to me that Caraher was often a settling presence on the Court and got the Ball Movement in the flow that Anderson wanted . David will not be a star but , I thought it noteworthy that Anderson saw something in his game and used it . That’s a good Coach !
