Mike Anderson - Former Coach

I don't think Anderson's lackluster coaching or W-L record this year gets him fired. We will find a way to win a few more games, and he will have his irrelevant "winning seasons" streak extended. It would have to be a combo of off court drama (Curbello?) and losing the trust and faith of the team in a way that is obvious to a casual fan or observer.

Never saw it before... but we are entering Norm Roberts territory with CMA...

I think the hill is too steep for the team to meet MA’s stated goal of getting dance ticket with what he perceived as his best SJ team. That said, I do expect, with his many years of experience, Mike can at least keep the kids spirit and interest up to at least compete the rest of the way. Otherwise, this would be a big negative re fan support and public perception.

You’ll get plenty of student support when you win. Going back a few years but we’ve had a big turnout at MSG under the basket when we’ve been good.

Really dating myself, go watch the SJU/Pitt clip. Glory days I know but the garden was rocking.

This is one of my three favorite St. John's games.

The other two are:

  • BE semi-final against Miami in 2000 (late clutch free throws by Anthony Glover -we beat UConn the next night)
  • 1999 OT loss to Duke. (B. Thornton -40pts.)

I don't think Anderson's lackluster coaching or W-L record this year gets him fired. We will find a way to win a few more games, and he will have his irrelevant "winning seasons" streak extended. Normally I would agree, but between the DeMeo law suit, the off court drama with Moore and almost the entire team transferring, the brain trust seemed to have no issue with Anderson and staff. But then again, they won that year, and winning is what has been the basis for the retention, or not, of a coaching staff 99% of the time among college hoops programs.

Unless of course you beat up and bite your fiancé. Although with Texas losing now, I wouldn’t bet against sone sort of reconciliation. 🤪

Let me once again say , if anyone here thinks I proposed Cooley as a Coach for us , I either mislead you or you misinterpreted my comments on Fr Shanley being the guy who picked Cooley . And , that give the good Dominican great experience and knowledge far beyond any of our past University Presidents . That being said , if you recall , Mike Anderson kind of fell into Cragg’s lap after fruitless search among Cluess, Moser , Bobby Hurley , etc all failed . Mike had just been let go by Arkansas . And , what good fortune for Cragg that Mike was suddenly available . I dare say , if we were not in a crisis position and organized a proper search would a Mike Anderson even be on our list of candidates ? I doubt it . And, not because CMA didn’t have credentials but , he was not familiar with BE basketball , our history and troubled 20 years of dismal basketball or , possible recruiting Circles to pursue . He also got a late start by having to move here , get settled , etc . And , he did benefit in year 1 with Mullin holdovers , Figgy , Herron, Greg Williams , Duke Earlington , Josh Roberts , McGriff , Dunn, etc . He did bring in Champ and Posh but , I’m uncertain whether those 2 were coming , even if Mullin was still Coaching ? I think the reality is that while other schools in the BE , PC especially but , also Xavier , Marquette , Creighton have shown the ability to retool their Programs very quickly , CMA and St John’s hasn’t in 4 years . And , if you haven’t done it in that time frame , it isn’t going to happen under Mike . Ever ! If a change in Coaching is coming and j think most fans here and alums believe it does, we need to get the very best Coach we can . We are looking to hire a BB Coach , not a Department Chair for the Theology Department . If we don’t consider a Pitino , Calipari Mack , etc , then we are doomed again to dismal results in the BE . And , don’t underestimate the folks at G’Town looking past a Pitino’s past indiscretions and hiring him . G’Town has evolved past many faith tenets of Catholicism in the past and views World and US issues in a different light than a school like St John ‘s . A good Act of Contrition and prayers of Penance should go a long way to looking past any person’s sins . Even Rick.

-Pitino is a major pipe dream. A high major legend isn't coming here. We have a better chance of Jim Calhoun coming out of retirement.

This part is absolutely untrue. I can tell you that Pitino wants this job. And for a school like ours that is in a position like ours, this MUST be the move. It is a once in a multi-lifetime opportunity to go get a coach with the success of Rick Pitino who, by all indications, still has his fastball. Even if we only keep him for 4 or 5 years before he retires, this is a no-brainer. With the transfer portal and immediate eligibility, Rick Pitino can have us competing for a sweet 16 by year 2. His is as close to a sure-thing in terms of winning as you can get. National championships with 2 different schools, a Final Four birth with 3 different schools and has taken 5 different schools to the NCAA tournament.

As far as the "scandals" go, quite frankly no one cares about these things anymore. Do you think any Auburn fans cared that Bruce Pearl was fired from a previous job for NCAA violations or that his assistant was arrested by the FBI when they were celebrating a Final Four birth a few years back?? If anything, Auburn has shown us the blueprint for how to handle these things - you don't have to fire your coach in the wake of a "scandal" if the coach is winning. People see past the NCAA nonsense and realize players should be paid, so any outrage that might've previously existed in recruiting compensation scandals virtually doesn't exist anymore. Especially with NIL and so many legal loopholes to get your athletes rightfully paid.

While I think CMA has brought a certain stability to the program, brought in mostly high character players, and helped developed the games of some players, the biggest issue I have with the current regime is lackluster success in quad 1 and BE conference (24-37) games. If those records were slightly better than .500, we might not be having this conversation. But they're not and we should now look hard at other options.

That Pitt vs St Johns game is one of my favorites as well. I remember my son in law who is NYPD was passing the 7th Ave entrance to the Garden when Hardy hit the winning shot at the buzzer! He said dad I never heard a roar like that in my life! He said it was surreal!
DONT TELL ME WE ARE DONE, WE JUST NEED THE RIGHT COACH!
Father SHanley go get Ricky!

For those of you that talk about the "stability" CMA has brought, when a program is losing and is irreverent, what how is that "stability"? He didn't take over a program the same way Norm was asked to take over a program. We didn't need stability, we needed a coach to win here. Besides, which of our last 6 coaches besides maybe Jarvis(at the end) ran an unstable program? CMA has had plenty of roster turnover and has had issues with some problematic kids. Every single coach before him has recruited better then him, so he's most certainly hasn't been stable in his recruiting or his coaching. As for him being a good representative of the school, again tell me how many of our past coaches were NOT a good representative of the school? Some of you guys are really grasping for straws.

Never saw it before... but we are entering Norm Roberts territory with CMA...
What's sad is that our overall BE record is pretty bad and only Lavin had a modicum of success in conference for a few years. Other than that, and CMA's second year (covid), we're pitiful.

And, since it's Friday and it's happy hour, one more thing; CMA knew exactly what he was getting in to when he signed his multi-million dollar contact. And if he didn't know it then, he most certainly knew it 2 years later when he went in and asked for a raise and an extension. He knew all the pitfalls that came with coaching in NYC and at SJU. He talked about winning a national championship. So far he has not made the post season. He was hired to win here. Pure and simple. If he can't win here, he needs to go. I don't care how great a guy he is, or that he's a great representative of the school. Hire me, as Knight suggested, and I'll be a great guy and a great representative of the school at a fraction of the cost.

This is written on another team's fan board that I follow. Seems like it was written about us. I guess there are a number of miserable fan bases out there.

Still time to turn things around a bit, But if the season ended today, you have to give Coach an F. No way around it. Complete failure on multiple fronts

- predictable/uncreative X's and O's
- complete inability to react to other teams' adjustments as they go on 10+ pt runs and put the game away, much less any hope of meaningful pro-active adjustments for us
- players not improving, if not regressing
- halfway through the season and rotation is STILL just throwing crap against the wall. Seems like nobody on the team knows what their role is

What's sad is that our overall BE record is pretty bad and only Lavin had a modicum of success in conference for a few years. Other than that, and CMA's second year (covid), we're pitiful.
That's because our coaching hires have been pitiful. There's a direct correlation.

What a great game and atmosphere. My whole family went to the game then we went to eat in the city.

I'd hire Monte just because he mentioned happy hour
