Mets

Meanwhile Span goes to SF for 3 yrs 31 million. We should have done that deal

What a waste of an offseason

Did anyone really think they were going to do anything substantive? Like last year, they are going to see where they are late and then maybe do something; will be their MO as long as the Wilpons are there.

While I loved D Straw, I think Piazza was the greatest hitting Met of all time. What say you?

I agree. Piazza is the greatest non pitcher in Met history. Congrats to Mike for making the HOF. Very well deserved.

I still wish he would've beat the heck out of Clemens back in the 2000 WS. It is fitting that Piazza gets elected to the Hall the same year that the cheating Clemens doesn't make it. Maybe Mike will invite Roger to his induction ceremony.

Expecting Piazza to make the Hall I tried to make reservations in July 2015. Unfortunately, there was no available hotels in Cooperstown for July 2016. One of my sons and I will travel from Herkimer, N.Y. about 40 minutes away. Fortunately, we will be able to stay in Saratoga for the races after Mike's induction. Tough life retirement.

I am thrilled that Piazza is going into the HOF as a Met
That gives us two members but we got duped out of a third one
I believe that Gary Carter would have decided go in as a Met if given the choice

Supposedly he went back and forth and was glad HOF picked for him

Andre Dawson asked to go in as a Cub and HOF said no.

Was always 100% up to player until Wade Boggs was going to get paid to go in as a Devil Ray

I think, in Carter's case, the HOF wanted at least one Montreal Expo inducted

Carter and Piazza both had their greatest success with the Mets.

But Carter had been an icon in Montreal and the majority of his career was with the Expos (12) vs the Mets (5).

Piazza eventually spent 8 seasons with NYM vs 7 with LAD.

Greatest TEAM success
Both were better with first teams though

I can't help but believe that payers at least in part choose what cap they will have on their plaque based on the potential for future earnings from that city.

Piazza was a great hitter, but for my money the best position player ever for the Mets was Keith Hernandez.

You’ve probably seen the ads and previews already, but just in case you haven’t........

MLB Network will be featuring Terry Collins in an upcoming episode hosted by Bob Costas. The show entitled ”Terry Collins: A Life in Baseball” will air at 9:00 PM on January 12.

Supposedly Cespedes deciding between 1 year Met offer and 5 year Oriole offer. LOL
Hopefully Cespedes and Jay Z are really, really stupid

Who let that leak out, Jeff Wilpon, the Fredo of the Mets?

That would make Fred- Vito? Way too kind.
Always thought of the Wilpon's as Randolph and Mortimer Duke

This garbage gets old. Remember when they announced they were in the hunt for A-rod, only $50 million off his best offer and refusal for all the perks his contract called for - all just to save face.

Next year's free agency class is really, really, bad. Historically bad. Best pitcher is Strasburg, and best outfielders are Jay Bruce, and 37-year old Jose Batista. The thinking from the Cespedes camp might be to sign a one-year deal, do for the Mets what he did last year, and then really break the bank in free agency as the #1 chip. Then, his contract demands for this year might be met (no pun intended), since there will almost literally be no one else on the market.

Imagine the met's cheapness actually working to our favor.

We just aren't that lucky

He might be older than his listed age and he hurt himself golfing. Can't imagine turning down a 5 year deal

Five years 90 million is reportedlt the orioles offer - jason bay numbers. Mets should cough it up. Cespedes likes ny and at tgat price should provide a good roi.

considering what they were paying Cuddyer this should be a no brainer bur they won't because the Wilpons are morons

Would be floored if Cespedes turned down 90 m guaranteed over 5 years for a 1 or 2 year deal. The older he gets, the less likely he is to secure serious money, especially with how the game is trending towards younger players, especially non-pitchers. And there is the risk of injury. I get that next year's free agent class is risky, but the guys who accept 1 year deals (like Cruz, coming off the PED suspension) do so because they have no options. And a 2 year deal makes even less, putting aside the injury risk, because at 32 it will be harder for him to get a contract that is more than 3 years (again, with how FA spend is trending).

Would anyone here turn down $90 million guaranteed for $70 million less? I think we know the answer to that.

It really is a joke that the Mets, coming off last season, won't spend for Cespedes or Justin Upton. They will still be a very good team because of the world-class starting pitching, but knowing what those guys are going to get paid at some point, the window to win is NOW. You win a title with Cespedes in the next year or two and no one will care if that contract is bad by year 4.

The starting pitching will be very good, but without Murphy and Cespedes in the middle of the order this team will lose a lot of 3-2, 2-1, and 4-3 games, especially with a bullpen that is less than rock solid
