Mets

No reason for Parnell or Niese to pitch in this game. We needed this game.

Should Reed take over the 8th inning role from Clippard? The guys been awesome since he came over. Clippard seems a little tired.

You're right Reed has looked real good and much better than Clipped and O'focknotagain

Dodgers down 3-0 in the 4th

I think so. I read an article a couple of weeks ago saying that Clippard would get worse as the season wore on.

I suggested it a week ago. The opposition is sitting on his changeup, plus his control has been off. Reed throws strikes and has been more effective then Clippard. I have faith Collins will make this change. Afterall, time is running out. My concern is if we need 10 pitchers for the playoffs who the hell will they be. Parnell, Torres, Stauffer, O'Flaherty are absolutely terrible. Niese has shown clearly he can't get lefties out. Gee, even Alvarez looks better against lefties. Fortunately the Dodgers look as bad as the Mets. Losing to the weaklings of the East is not very encouraging.

Well if Matz doesn't fall apart we probably wouldn't need those two tonight. This guy is so damn injury prone. First it's his shoulder, then his lat now his back. We now have to worry if he will be available for the playoffs. Give me a break saying he slept wrong. Yeh right,

@AnthonyDiComo: Bobby Parnell has recorded zero outs in three of his last nine appearances. #Mets

Still OK with me that we are losing games and not being penalized. If there's any time to lose it's now (assuming we don't blow this home field edge over LA). In 8 days the intensity will be unprecedented for the entire team except D. Wright, cespedes, cuddyer, uribe, colon and maybe Johnson. All of our starting pitchers will be making their playoff debut. Would have to think there will be some extra zip on those 96 mph heaters!

Stop it! He's a Long Island kid, a Mets fan all his life. His ceiling is higher than perhaps any other pitcher the Mets have. If he is injury prone, we will just have to deal with it. Remember, the Mets cast off a guy who couldn't stop rubbing up blisters on his fingers for Jim Fregosi.

Damn, Jack, you are crankier than Keith Hernandez. :)

I could be wrong but I believe Matz would have pitched were it a playoff game or there was still a race going on. Playoff series many times come down to bullpens and in terms of depth, the Mets have an erratic one at best and a lousy one at worst. Just a fact and it could come back and bite them, we shall see.

I'd move Thor to the bullpen and use him in the following way (presuming Matz is a go): If one of the 4 starters is pitching well but with a high pitch count after 5 or 6 inning, bring in Thor to go the distance, at least through the 8th. Even if a starter was having a rough start after 2-3 innings, Syndergaard could come in and throw 100mph smoke, and we wouldn't have to toss the game to our shake middle relief.

My inane thoughts:
1. The Reed, Clippard, Familia 7-8-9 is better than average. Robles has good. He is young and crazy, but has talent. Gilmartin, Verrett, Torres, Goedell are nice long man options. Parnell, O'(h no) Flaherty, et al will not see a sliver of the postseason. Besides, the Dodger pen is shaky at best.

2. I would start Thor. His numbers in the first inning are not good, so I don't want to chance it. Also, if he is on, he can be nearly untouchable.

3. I like DeGrom, Syndergaard, Harvey, Matz if the Mets have home field. If the Dodgers have it, swap Harvey and Syndergaard. They will each pitch once (except DeGrom if needed), which saves their innings.

4. The team won 11 straight road games, and they had a couple of clunkers. This was bound to happen. Get it out of the system now.

5. After the Cespedes scare, I didn't care one about the game. We can agree, the bigger picture was the health of Cespedes. That was a fine trade off.

It's a good discussion, but better than average doesn't win a championship because most average adn below average bullpens will be watching the playoffs from home. The Mets have a pretty good history in this regard (moving a starter to the bullpen). Both Nolan Ryan and El Sid were moved to the bullpen in our only WS championships.

Ryan and El Sid were 5th starters. So in keeping with tradition, the Mets are auditioning Colon and Niese for the bullpen.

If I were to say the Mets bullpen, especially 7-8-9 is as good as anyone, would that be better? We are most familiar with the clunkers on the Mets staff. But all playoff teams are concerned about it. The best of the bunch may be Pittsburgh, but they have an extra game to play.

Besides, I am worried about LA first. And that bullpen is average.
