The hitting...the fielding?!

Wil-mer Flor-es *clap, clap, clapclapclap*

Gilmartin killed it too. deGrom gets rocked, bullpen goes 7.3 scoreless...who would have ever seen that coming?

Ummm...wow.

This game is FAR from over, but...Jesus Christ!
LOL.. we could get 15+homers at every position if we played
1B Duda
2B Murphy
SS Flores
3B Wright/Uribe
LF Conforto/Cuddyer
CF Cespedes
RF Grandy

Also, I am in the minority but I like what Collins has been doing. I get the competition but this is building confidence.

It also helps these guys have all bought in. I guess winning does that to a team.

What a wacky ass game. That bullpen has been a hot mess of late, but tonight, it wins the game. The first seven hitters in the lineup all had RBI and put out 18 hits.

Ever since that Wilmer-trade-that-wasn't week...(with Cespedes, the Braves trade, and Cilppard), this team has been just fun to watch.

Lastly, no better place for D Dubs to return...he hits that park so well. Welcome back. And good luck with that back.

Way back in 1969 and 1973, there were some hallmark games that looking back, defined the season:

1969
1) Ron Swoboda's 2 homeruns against Steve Carlton that carried the Mets to a win despite 19(?) strikeouts.
2) Gil Hodges long stroll to left field to remove Cleon Jones vs. the Astros after he dogged it going after a base hit.
3) A pair of 1-0 gems in a double header sweep (one was by Cardwell)
4) The black cat game vs. the cubs.

1973:
1) The Dan Augustine "home run" vs. the Pirates that hit the very top of the wall and instead of bouncing over the fence (99.9% chance), it popped right back to Cleon Jones who held Agustine to a single.

Last night was one of those games, where everything could have gone wrong, but the team just stepped on the gas and turned a blowout loss into a blowout win. Pennants are won on the backs of these games.

I'm hopeful that the Wilpons, who aren't just cheap, but are profit driven, will take note of the turnstyles spinning compared to the malaise of a merely .500 team. Cespedes is the catalyst for this, and suddenly an anemic lineup is a dangerous one - a lot of the dominoes fell into place - D'Arnaud and Wright's return, Uribe and Johnson, Duda's resurgence, etc. It's all connected but Cespedes is the key. He could be a bargain at $20 million.

My boy Wilmer! So happy for the kid....what a game on both sides of the ball...wow. 14 homers and 54 RBI batting at the end of the lineup with 40 games left. Just awesome. .265 average to boot. Can't say it enough, I love the bottom of the order now with any combination of Flores, d'Arnaud (love this kid), Conforto, Johnson, and Uribe.

Conforto has such a beautiful swing. Ron was saying how he reminds him of Mattingly--who he faced coming up. I really see it.

Last night was as gutsy of a win as I can remember. Your ace, who has been untouchable for 15 starts, gets lit up and you fall behind 7-2 but come back to trounce them. Wilmer's three run shot when they were down 7-5 was so clutch. The kid is as clutch as anyone.

I still laugh when people say the Mets need a shortstop. Wilmer will hit more than 15 home runs, 70 RBI's hit between .260 and 270 with decent defense. How many shortstops in baseball can give you that kind of production.

I do not think the Wilpons were cheap of their own accord but do to being Madoffed. Prior to that they spent though not always wisely. With the turnstiles spinning and advertisers fighting to pay for mets games next season I think the purse strings will open up a bit. Now keeping 5 quasi number 1 pitchers in 3 years will be another story. (Harvey, Degrom, Syndagard, Wheeler, MAtz) Cant give the 20 - 25 million each. I am sure we have 3 or 4 still stashed in the minors. Damm the Isles are better, Chris will bring us back, if the Jets can get a QB, The mets are just a joy to watch right now. Damm things are looking u p :)

And to top it all off he is a very nice young man. God was with us when he stopped that trade.

Yes, especially since Gomez is hitting .180. Must be the bad hips slowing him down.

Not the prettiest victory, but I'll take it and hope the dominance in Philly continues.

I'm really enjoying watching Travis d'Arnaud right now. If he stays healthy, he will be a leader down the line. Good energy, but able to be cool at the plate--bases loaded walk to tie the game. He was hitting before being injured, and he has gotten back in the fold quickly. Dirty uniforms and some IQ on a field...always love a catcher like that. He fits the bill. He actually tried to stop that Robles pitch, had D-Wright throw to 1st on that soft grounder, etc. He is blossoming before our very eyes.

He's a throwback. He's smart has a great all-around feel for the game. He and Flores are my two favorite Mets position players.

Comments from the peanut gallery (ahem) aside, this is such a compelling pennant race for Mets fans.

As with the (few) other great Mets teams in their 50 plus seasons, this teamed is buoyed by great young pitching. Casey Stengel loved the phrase, the "Youth of America". There are enough kids on this team for fans to become as enthused as the dugout appears to be these days.

Even in an era of 2 wild cards, there will likely not be a consolation prize of a playoff berth if the Mets fail to secure the division. Old time pennant race here - second place will be first place for losers (credit to Vince Lombardi).

Need to choose a fan favorite? Take your pick among young starters Harvey, deGrom, Syndergaard, or even the debutante Matz. Maybe the emotions on his sleeve Flores. Root hard for David Wright, appearing in a cameo role at what could be the twilight of a really solid career due to a serious pathology. Credit to Alderson (with Wilpons blessing - gasp) for bringing in a bevy of reinforcements (Cespedes, Uribe, Johnson, Clippard & more). Grandy, Murphy, Lagares, D'arnaud, Conforto or others - take your pick. Will it be long before girls identify the bachelors (what an ancient noun) on this squad and begin wearing their jersey and holding placards with marriage proposals (as they did for Tug McGraw so many seasons ago)?

This is not exactly familiar territory for Mets fans, being in a charge for a pennant. There are so many Johnny fans that are Mets fans also, and with both teams, we've come to expect failure. Even in the midst of what should be a joyous ride, somewhere just behind the euphoria is the fear that this is smoke and mirrors and will end badly. Which explains the did-someone-piss-in-your-cheerios-this morning reactions here to any comments trying to derail this happiness.

Are there any of us Mets fans not paying much closer attention to games on a daily basis now? Have we watched more games this season than we have in the last 3,5,8 seasons combined? We are now firmly in scoreboard watching baseball. The Mets are heated up, but the Nationals appear to be waking from a prolonged slumber having won three in a row (and losing 1/2 a game in the process).

Thirty-seven games remaining to be savored. It could all evaporate in one bad week, but if the Mets are ready to collapse, they aren't showing any signs of it. October baseball? Each day it is becoming not just a possibility but more of a probability. As the impish old Stengel chanted, "Metsies, Metsies, Metsie!" Let's go Mets.

Loved seeing him jump out in front of the plate and tell Wright to throw to first. They needed the sure out there. Travis is a very good player although injury prone.. It's unfortunate our best field player prospect might be Plawecki.
