Mets

Mets fans are typically always waiting for the other shoe to drop, but not this time around. There is a building enthusiasm and confidence that this is legitimate, and the sky is the limit. This is a team that could go very deep into the post season.

Cespedes must be signed to an extension before the season ends or the Mets are forced to release him as per a clause in his contract. If they release him, they are not allowed to bid on him in the free agent market until May 15. So it's either extend him or lose him. I have a feeling that if this team goes into the post season with Cespedes playing well, the Wilpons will find the $130 million it will take to sign him.

I thought signing him wasn't an option.

Agreed. Cespedes has to be resigned at any cost. He is the one big bat that we've all been saying the team needed for over a year with or without Wright. Trade Cuddyer and pickup whatever % of his 12.5 mill contract a team requires. I'm sure the Rockies would take him back for 8.5 mill. Trade Neise and his 10 mill if you have to.

Although I don't want to make a definitive decision after a handful of games, if Cespedes appears to be the real deal, the Wilpons will be drooling over the way the turnstyles will continue to spin. A bump of 10,000 fans per game means about 500K-$1 million in revenue per game. HE could be a bargain at 18-20 million, whereas Cuddyer at $12.5 million is a dud.

I think if the Mets keep Cespedes, it will be just short of a miracle. I would love to keep him...though let's see how it plays out a bit more. But his numbers mean a potentially big contract, and I have trouble seeing the Mets do some 150mil type contract. Especially when some of these pitchers will be getting deals in the coming years. Any Tim Duncan discounts available with these guys who want to be here so badly? :)

They probably see Conforto in left next year. They still gotta carry Cuddyer, Grandy, for another year. Niese...is anyone paying attention? His contract is a bargain. And he may finally put in a FULL year. If he were traded somewhere, he should be part of getting something significant. I like having another lefty in the rotation and one who gives a different look compared to all the Nolan Ryan young arms we have. Niese has been solid all summer minus that one pre-baby start.

I want to enjoy the next two months and not worry about such things until after the season ends. been into this team for too long to care about the "future," we always have one, but rarely get to present ourselves presently.

I will say this though...it's a good sign that Wheeler, Flores, Cespedes...all want in, and others around the league probably do as well. That is a good thing.

I can't take the Mets serious until they sign Cespedes. We know the cheapo owners won't anti up and we'll go back to a AAA lineup next year. We'll have one of the top pitching staffs in recent memory and still won't win anything. By the way how long until Harvey and Degrom are pitching in the Bronx? I just have no faith in Met ownership. I hope they prove me wrong.

Niese is putting together an awesome season. I wouldn't quite call him a bargain at 10 mill next year, though. He's making more than our entire staff combined times two next year. How much more can he give us than Montero/Wheeler next year at a combined one mill? I'd like to keep him, but if it meant the difference between having Cespedes or not, bye bye Neise. I'm also willing to move Lagares with nothing in return just to clear salary. That notion would have been unheard of a few months ago.

Colon's 11 mill, Dee's 3.5 mill, Parnell's 3.5 mill and whatever you can get for Cuddyer come off the books next year. You also have to figure that we can resign Uribe and Clippard for better deals.

Hopefully Cuddyer starts to rake and we make a run so his value skyrockets. He's a good player, just not worth 12.5 mill next year at his age when we have Conforto basically playing for free.

Niese:
2015: $7 million, 2016: $9 million, 2017: $10 million ($500,000 buyout), 2018: $10.5 million ($500,000 buyout)

That's a bargain for a lefty with his numbers. And sorry, Montero may not even want to pitch these days, and Wheeler is at best ready for May/June. Colon will be gone. Pitching does not grow on trees, and you need a 4/5 guy. I'm cool with it being Niese--that heads up play telling Wilmer to slide wide--this guy could be the elder statesmen after Colon leaves. And yes, I would trust him more than Montero/Wheeler as things currently stand. And this organization will have Wheeler on an innings watch, injuries happen, etc.

additionally, those 150 million dollar type contracts for 30 year olds? they often turn into bad deals (Cano a recent example, but even a Pujols is overpaid nowadays, Carl Crawford, Upton, Hamilton, Ryan Howard, etc.). I just don't see the Mets having the sack to ante up as such.

It's sad that we need to do all this nonsense pretend-math because the team is just so cheap. It would be ideal if they could just sign Cespedes and not have to hurt rotation and center field to do so.

Retract my value comment. I thought it was 10 mill next year...but I haven't looked in weeks. 7 mill is not bad at all. I'd love to keep him, but, again, if it meant the difference between Cespedes leavning, no-brainer for me.

you were not wrong about the 10 really, it's 9 next year. point is, at most, he is 30 mil for three more years, whereas Cespedes will be banking like 2/3 of that for a season. this team might be too cheap for that.

and watching this game right now, i am liking him and Duda as a duo in the middle of the lineup. multi-run innings are becoming the norm of late. two weeks ago, we couldn't scrap together a run half the time. i am with you, hope they keep him. just sad that the mets have to consider the salary cap in a league without one because of wilpon nonsense.

peace.

Aren't Colon and Murphy in walk years? That salary combined should be enough to sign Cespedes. No one is taking Cuddyer and the Mets aren't gonna fork over money so maybe they trade Lagares or he has the TJ surgery and sits out next year. Herrera can replace Murphy and Matz/Wheeler can take over for Colon.

Niese is building up great trade value if we need to move him next year. Pitching lights out. Hopefully he keeps it up, Damn we are fun to watch right now. I actually was trying to leave the restaurant early so I could get him to catch part of the game

Yup! Plenty of room to resign Cespedes, Uribe, Johnson, and maybe even Clippard. 7 mill of dead weight with Parnell and Gee. Mejia won't bet getting his 3 mill. Management needs to look at Cuddyer like an over-aggressive hand of Hold'em...can't worry about what you put in the pot early, and just have to play the current situation.

Cespedes is incredible. I don't need to see any more....speed, power to spare, good glove, and hitting for average. He passes the eye test. Go with Flores/Herrera/Johnson next year and let Murph walk.

One thing that stands out with this team is that we have some great personalities and some good guys that are easy to cheer for. It looks like they are having a blast.

Granderson might be the nicest guy in baseball, Wright is Captain America, Flores has endured himself to sports fans across the country, Uribe is the jokester vet that everyone wants to sit next to, Cuddyer is a great leader and veteran presence, the pitching staff is close and very chill, Conforto is the young guy, and d'Arnaud and Plawecki both seem like amazing teammates.

You guys are forgetting about Duda. We offered him 30 million for three years in the off season and he turned us down. His arbitration number could go up a lot with two 30 home run seasons in a row.

Duda was crazy to turn that down. He'll be 32 when he hits free agency. I don't think his first year of arbitration will be very high...maybe 7 mill or so. He's already making 4.2 mill.
