Mets Hot Stove talk--2024-25

I love how fans go nuts when we announce some small signing. Do fans not think Stearns is not trying to sign a couple good pitchers? There hasn’t been much movement which tells me that the players/agents are probably asking for crazy numbers. The Severino signing kind of screwed up the market.

It’s crazy. Stearns is a monster and he crushed it last year with smaller signings. Iglesias didn’t even play in the majors in 2023 and he hit .337 for us playing stellar defense. That should buy him ton of leniency.

Stearns has said all along he wants 8-10 MLB caliber starters and will go with a 6-man rotation.

He’s hunting value and shorter term, and the market will take time to get there.

Christian Walker signed the Astros for 3 years and 60 mill.

That contract must be sobering for Pete and Boras.

Next year's first base market is Vlad Guerrero Jr and Munteka Murakami, both guys who are 5-6 years younger than Pete.

Not sure why big market teams will want to lock themselves up when you get get prime years out of, probably better players
This might be greedy, but what about both Pete and Vlad? We have the prospect capital to get Vlad as a rental. Maybe offer Pete a team friendly deal with a player-opt out after year one. Marte and his 20 million come off the books after 2025. Maybe someone would take Marte if we paid $12-13 mill.

That's a lot of righty bats, but Vlad has better splits against RHP.

To me, I don't want to trade for Vlad. I'd rather try to sign Pete to a short-term deal. 3/90 or 4/110 with player opt-outs. I don't want him for more than four years.

Then next off-season, let Cohen's next fishing expedition be for Vlad. Vlad can play 3B, Vientos to DH, Alonso at 1B (or DH).

I would happily go to 5 years with Alonso if the 5th would only vest based on eclipsing certain statistics. Power is the last thing to go...I don't have a lot of concern for Alonso at 34. I don't have a problem at all with giving him the opt out after one year. We'll know so much more about Clifford (who is a tank) and can go after Vlad if he opts out.

For me, Pete is at near David Wright stature. Very good guy, lifelong Met, likely to be first Met to hit 400 homers with 500 not a reach. When there was little to root for here was this kid ripping shirts off veterans to celebrate walkoffs. We're spoiled when he only hit 34 homeruns and only drives in 90.

I agree Pete is reaching Mets top 10, but only if he stays.
I’d go no higher than 3/75. If 4/100, I would want it a club option w a 5 mil buyout.
Pete’s production has declined 3 years in a row.
After averaging .870 ops his 1st 4 years, 2023 was .821 & 24 was a pedestrian .788
