Mets Hot Stove talk--2024-25

Me and Zack Scott on the same page:

That seems like way too much for Eovaldi. Maybe a one year contract with a mutual option for 20. They love Buehler but think he is going someplace else. Beginning of last year pitching was supposed to be a weakness and those guys killed it. I would love Manaea back but he's out going to be too much.

I think McNeil is getting traded and Acuna is taking over 2nd. Speed, Defense and youth. They aren't going to get a great return for him but maybe a bullpen arm or 2nd tier prospect.

Keep McNeil. Professional hitter. Poised for a bounce back year. Not sold on Acuna. Can be exciting but have a feeling he'll be very inconsistent.

Resigning Pete is a no-brainer.

The amount of protection he has now with Soto and vice-versa is game-changing.

Plus you can't discount the PR. The amount of goodwill those two signings will bring to the fanbase who have lived through signings of bums.... the amount of preseason ticket sales will be through the roof.

Martino says some optimism in re-signing Manaea.

But also…

Labeled as most aggressive suitor, and “people familiar with the Sox’s farm system say the team still needs better players at up-the-middle positions such as shortstop, second base and center field.”

Agreed. Use McNeil as a suer utility guy. Hope for a bounce back. Why trade him for a mid—level prospect and eat most of his salary?
Disagree need to use his spot to get younger faster cheaper. There was talk earlier of swapping his $ for another salary dump like Jordan Montgomery. Last year was supposed to be the bounce back now looking like 2022 was the outlier.

Understand how you can feel that way but McNeil is 2 seasons off a league best .326, has a career average of .289, and at $12.5 per thru 2026 is relatively cheap. Three of last 4 years he hit .270 or less, so that's the dilemma. Seems when he is hitting well he goes to opposite field a lot.

McNeil has suffered since MLB outlawed the shift. Most players had no care or did not know how to hit to a gaping hole. They would just try to smash their way through the over shift.

McNeil was more than happy to hit it where they weren’t. But does not have that advantage anymore and his batting average has dropped.

Still a good hitter, but I don’t think he will reach .326 again.

Confident we will fill in the gaps as needed but I still haven't come down from the high that is

1 - Lindor
2 - Vientos
3 - Soto

At the top of our lineup. For the foreseeable future. Most excited I have ever been for a Mets season to start

Now imagine Francisco Alvarez reaches his potential. He hasn’t figured it out yet. I still think he does but he has work to do. Having Soto and Lindor around probably helps. Good times.

That would be friggin awesome. I may get more excited about that than Soto even. This guy has ace written all over him.
This totally feels like the head cheerleader turning down a date with the captain of the robotics team as nicely as possible.

At least the Mets have a nice personality.

With Cohen, I honestly don’t discount anything. He knows they need a starting pitcher.
