Mets 2024 Season

That’s the difference. We don’t have the top of the lineup to support a .200 defense-first catcher and third baseman not hitting like Baty.

If McNeil can get back to even 85% of what he was, that would help so much.

Alvarez has an attitude and energy that is infectious.
They are trying Baty at second base now hoping he can become a cheaper McNeil-like utility man.

Of course Baty has not hit much in the majors, but maybe if he doesn’t have pressure of having to hit to keep his 3B job will allow him to breathe.

Other than the one Alonso swing, unfortunately, the Mets just mailed it in through 7 1/2 tonight.

Alonso with a rocket Mets lead 3-1
Perfect example of Alonso delivering the lead. Only to have our shitty bullpen give it right back. But, he’s “not clutch”. I don’t know where they are going to replace the 40 HRs . and 100 plus RBI.

I don’t think Baty has that kind of athletic ability. McNeil has been one of the most versatile defenders we’ve ever had in my time as a fan. Baty is a little more stiff.

Since we have now lost a game, are we back to being the worst team in baseball again?

The next 2 games a a perfect time for me. First pitch is 7:20pm in London, so it’s just after I put my kids down for bed.

I posted that we would be better off without Pete Alonso this season. I was joking but he is overrated and he does frustrate me.

Hes not clutch. Theres a whole body of evidence to support that. He’s also streaky as hell, but you can say that about most of these guys. They remind me of the Islanders in that sense. They score in bunches and then don’t. These guys hit for two weeks and then they can’t for a month.

If our franchise was smart, we would’ve signed him to a long deal five years ago and bought out his arbitration years + have him for a couple more.

I’m not even sure if I’d say he’s not clutch or clutch. I just think he’s extremely streaky. When he’s on, he can carry a lineup by himself. When he’s not, he’s not doing anything to positively impact the game. His glove is fine at best, and he can’t run.

Yeah this is probably a better assessment than “he’s not clutch.” Pretty spot on.

He consistently has hit 40 Hrs . ( 3 seasons) Consistently 100 RBI guy. (3 seasons at about 120) Covid years excluded. No ones saying he’s the best player in the league. He has flaws but who exactly is going to replace that production when he’s gone?

@dk423 summed it up much better than I did. Stats are stats. My eyes tell me otherwise. I’m not giving a max contract to a guy who’s about to be 30 who’s never had a big hit that I could remember. That’s me though, just my opinion.

This franchise needs winning ballplayers. They don’t have many of them right now. You could plug a bunch of guys at a position like 1st. Vientos for example. The Mets actually have prospects right now. You have an owner willing to spend, he’s shown it already. You have Nimmo and Lindor, there’s nothing you can do about that. You need pitching, plain and simple, and if you can get Soto, get Soto.

The thing you’re missing, re-reading your post is that “no one is saying he’s the best player in the league.” Well, he damn sure is gonna expect to be paid like he is.

Didn’t the Mets start the practice of running out on the field and ripping the shirt off of the player who just had the game winning hit and wasn’t Pete the first? Few times he ended up shirtless so I’d say either you don’t remember or you missed those games.

He was usually the guy ripping off the shirt so it wasn’t him.

Hey you guys want to give him 10 years, 300 million, be my guest. I don’t want to and you’re not changing my mind. HE can change my mind by leading this team into the playoffs. Simple as that.

His savant page shows a player already beginning to decline. I don't think it's as simple as "40 home runs and 100 rbi's" question. I'd much rather spend that money on Juan Soto -- younger and a much better hitter.

And if Soto is totally out of the question (NYY would be nuts to let him walk), I'd rather dip under the CBT & try out Vientos at 1st base or target a defensive plus there who is an okay hitter. I trust Stearns with making the hard decision and am happy he values defense.

I’m 100% on board with this.

Yes it was because I remember them saying he has a dad bod. Not advocating resigning him or not but to say he never gets a big hit is patently ridiculous.
