Mets 2024 Season

He consistently has hit 40 Hrs . ( 3 seasons) Consistently 100 RBI guy. (3 seasons at about 120) Covid years excluded. No ones saying he’s the best player in the league. He has flaws but who exactly is going to replace that production when he’s gone?

I remember hearing the same argument about Hojo - another great stat guy who just didn't seem to propel the Mets any farther than mediocrity.

Yes it was because I remember them saying he has a dad bod. Not advocating resigning him or not but to say he never gets a big hit is patently ridiculous.
Ok, those two or three times he’s won a game were so memorable. I remember he hit a monster shot against St Louis in ‘22.

Maybe I was spoiled by Piazza, but the clutchest player the Mets have had in 20 years since was probably Beltran and ironically he’s more remembered for not swinging at a certain curveball.

Not even sure if this helps Pete's case or shows how sad our history is. lol

It shows how sad our history is.

To be tied with Kevin McReynolds of all people *shudders*. Talk about an all stats guy, he’s a prime example. The other three I get. I’m too young for Jones but Piazza always came through and Flores was a good hitter when the chips were down. Really wanted to keep him.

Ohtani played 6 years with the Angels, all with Mike Trout, they never had a winning record together. Trout has played 12 years for them, 3 winning records, one playoff appearance. The idea that a teams record is a reflection of any one players “clutchness” is patently ridiculous. Alonso, as has been shared here and like most power hitters, is streaky to say the least, but he has had his share of big hits, he just does not play for a winning organization.

Your last sentence is spot on. And, a guy like him isn’t changing that. Neither is Lindor or Nimmo. We’re already stuck with those two, I’d rather not be stuck with three.

For as good as Lindor and, yes, Alonso CAN BE, they’re just not move the needle guys. They both can be excellent complementary pieces but if there’s any kind of a choice here between Alonso and Soto it has to be Soto. 100 times out of 100.

I don’t know if those ‘86 Mets made a deal with the devil, and they were certainly the guys to do it, there’s just been this cloud over the organization since. The highs aren’t even that high, they feel high to us because there’s so few of them, but the lows are…well, they’re something, that’s for sure.

Great, so you would take Soto over Alonso, probably so would I; but your point? There are better players than Pete Alonso? There are and who is arguing there aren’t?
But saying you would rather have Soto than Alonso means nothing unless the Mets can sign Soto, which I highly doubt, and does nothing to prove your assertion that Alonso is an “anti-clutch” ball player; he is not.
He is a good player, a proven power hitter and if you can improve over him, you do it, but IMO, that is a very big IF.

lol whatever. I know what I see. If I want to argue, I’m married, I can do it at home.

Pay him then. All of you love him.
I’m not paying him a red cent, neither are you, so I couldn’t care less what he makes. And I love people who are eager to argue until proven wrong and then pretend to be above it all.
Have a good one.

It’s called an opinion. There was no agressiveness in this thread until you brought it and then I tried to walk away, I don’t do that on the interwebz, not my thing.

Nuts, right? I may be wrong. But it’s mine.

I’m above nothing. I hope I’m wrong. I’m a fan of this team. He plays on it.

Got it, my bad, you are entitled to an opinion but if one disagrees with it and says why it is labeled “aggressiveness”.
I thought it was a discussion. My apologies.

lol disagree with it all you want. I’m “arguing” with like 4 people, I’m clearly the only one who feels this way. And, that’s fine. I felt aggressiveness from you, so, yeah, I walk away. You want to take that as me being above anyone or a sign of me being weak, that’s up to you. Im sure you’ve read my posts, I’ve been here forever, I’m not winning smartest or best poster any time soon. lol none of that changes what I think of Alonso or what you think about him and to me, that’s perfectly fine.

They’re winning again, so there’s that at least.

Hey, we agree! lol

See this is the kind of rebuttal I can get behind. None of you are changing my mind and I’m certainly not gonna change any of yours.
As I said before in so many words I’m ambivalent about resigning Alonso so long as if they don’t they replace him with like or better production.

If our franchise was smart, we would’ve signed him to a long deal five years ago and bought out his arbitration years + have him for a couple more.

I’m not even sure if I’d say he’s not clutch or clutch. I just think he’s extremely streaky. When he’s on, he can carry a lineup by himself. When he’s not, he’s not doing anything to positively impact the game. His glove is fine at best, and he can’t run.

It’s complete negligence that we didn’t sign him to an extension his rookie year. What more did they need to see?! We should extend Alvarez this f*cking weekend. The Braves extend their young stars as rookies.

It’s not sustainable to get into bidding wars for your players.

To me it’s pretty complicated. Yes, he puts numbers up, clearly. I don’t remember who said it, but your baseball card is who you are. Truth. To me, maybe unfair, he reminds me of Dave Kingman, who I’m just old enough to remember. I’m not putting this all on him because baseball is a team sport but he also reminds me of David Wright. An awesome guy, accountable, great with kids, even a great player (although I do give the nod to Wright, the stenosis really effed him up). But, also found Wright not to be particularly clutch. Don’t get me started on Reyes lol.

I would sign Alonso easily if Lindor and Nimmo weren’t already in the fold. I hate to say but these three as a core are .500 or maybe slightly better. If there was better pitching, maybe there’d be a different story here but unfortunately, we have Senga who’s a what-if now, and a whole crap load of what if’s. Even Scott.

We’re “stuck” with those two. We’re not “stuck” with Alonso. I don’t find any of them particularly clutch, just so you guys don’t think I’m singling Pete out, but Soto is the type of superstar who, supposedly, wants to come here and might actually be available…which is why I brought his name up. He’s actually a realistic option. And, he’s the kind of player who can get this team to win a division, possibly a championship, which I don’t see possible with position players they have now. Uncle Steve only has so much money which is why I also brought that up.

Hey, I would love it if we win no matter what the circumstances are or if Alonso is signed and hits 60HRs.

Extend Christian Scott while we're at it!

I don’t think Alonso can be the best player. I would like him back, though. You have to find a way to build in offense when he’s off. Spot and his OBP is that guy.
