Mets 2024 Season

How can it go down as a huge disappointment if they were not expected to be very good at beginning of the season ?
They signed a handful of players on 1 year contracts to bridge a year until big bad contracts came off books.
80-90 mil of unperforming contracts are gone in 2 months.
Yea a few starters had below average years, but we had unexpected strong. years
from Peterson, manea, severino , butto & vientos.
And nice complementary years from iglesias, winker , Nunez & maton .
I hoped for mor as a fan, but back in March, I would have signed up for where we are today- let’s go Mets !

Rebuild year? Outside of Vientos, the Mets haven’t played any “new” players. Certainly no other young ones. With the years Nimmo, Alonso, McNeil and Alvarez have had and the overall failure of the entire bullpen, this year goes down as a huge disappointment to me if they don’t make the playoffs.
This is crazy. No reasonable person would have expected this team to be 15 over .500 if they were told Senga would only pitch 6 innings in the regular season.

Vientos has played out of his mind until the last week. Manaea and Severino are scraping their heads on their respective ceilings. Butto has come out of nowhere to be a shutdown reliever. Peterson would have the 3rd best ERA in the NL and 6th in baseball if he qualified — and nobody saw that coming. Iglesias wasn’t even on a MLB roster last year at 33 and he’s hitting .323. Bader has been incredibly solid. And Lindor might finish #2 in MVP voting.

This team is overachieving.

I think our o/u & analytic prognosticators had us at 84 — which is exactly what I pegged us to be.

I’d say it’s fair to say we’re overachieving and the team’s been frustrating because of all the blown leads. But this was explicitly said to be a transition year

That was with Senga making 30 starts as a legitimate ace. He's pitched 6 innings!

I also think it was important to have a season like this because it also shows that our manager is (likely) very legit, our organization can help give players bounce back years (Severino, Manaea), the FO is very competent in making moves around the edges (where would we be without Iglesias, Torrens and Taylor?), and that the team is very much on the upswing.

Maybe Cohen's money won't be the only deciding factor for some free agents deciding to come here.

I have to agree with this. I think a .500 year was what was widely expected from this group despite the gaudy payroll number. Especially considering Alonso’s empty numbers, Marte being out a while and terrible 2nd halves from Nimmo and Martinez.

And Baty being a complete dud and then season-ending injury.

my bet was at 80 1/2. I liked the over and liked the team but definitely not for how it worked out. I did think the starting pitching could be ok but expected a big year by Alonso. I also thought once they were in at the trading deadline they would spend. So didn't go as I expected but still in it.

Yea, while players that are a part of our core (alonso/nimmo/McNeil/Alvy) have had disappointing seasons, I don't think the season itself can be called a disappointment.

It is easy to get hung up on some of the bad losses. There have been some brutal blown leads throughout the year.

But to put in perspective, we are also tied for 2nd in the league this year in comeback wins with 37. We also LEAD the league in 9th inning comebacks, with 7. So yes we have blown games but we have also stolen games as well.

If we don't make the playoffs, I will be bummed but I will look back fondly on this season. Despite mediocre seasons from multiple guys who we expect more from

The Mets have historically been a franchise that hits unbelievable highs and inexplicable lows. The lows, unfortunately, completely outweigh the highs. That’s why we all root for them, right? 😉

Looking ahead we might have a problem with the weather.

I am looking at a forecast of Rain for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. The very LAST thing this team needs is a rainout/Doubleheader.

To be fair, if our games Wednesday-Friday get rained out, it is an opportunity for Lindor to heal up without missing games

Easy, I don’t decide my expectations based on talking heads and paper, in other words, I watch teams play and decide real time what I think. If you guys think the team played up to their potential, I respect that but disagree big time.
To put it another way, I have never in my life “signed up” for anything before a season even started. Different strokes…….

So quick, name me the mind bending comebacks this team has made in those 37. We all can name many they have blown. If your point is that the team doesn’t quit, I am with you. We part with being satisfied that the team realized their potential, hence my possible disappointment. Also maybe some of the difference is age, I just don’t have many more “wait ‘til next years” left. 😩

I can remember some, Lindor against the Pirates big 2 run hit late in the game. Lindor against the Blue Jays breaking a no hitter with a solo shot, we win with several more runs in the ninth. Our win against the Phillies in London was another thrilling one that I think was the start of our turnaround. I also particularly remember a game against the Braves where McNeil walked it off because their right fielder overran the ball.

There have been some great wins. I think my point is, this team has been a roller coaster, for every bad loss we give up late in game, theres a game where we scratch out a win late. Even last night we trailed the whole game 1-0. We find a way. And I enjoy that about this team.

But I do agree, there are things to be disappointed about. Multiple vets who are a part of our "core" have had weak seasons. But hey, Lindor is paid like a superstar and he has played like one, and it has covered up a lot of weaknesses. Since he is my favorite player this season has been more enjoyable for me than most Mets seasons, I will say.

One point, there are certainly things I like about this team, but ultimately, it is about winning, maybe more so, reaching your potential.
I have read all the rationalizations about last years Johnnies, for me, the year was a disappointment because the team did not come close to realizing their potential. I think a big reason for that was the very surprising, for me, indecisiveness by Pitino, of who to play, when to play them, and what their role would be. In some ways, I thought it totally appropriate that Dunlap completely turned the UConn game around and then was glued to the bench in the 2nd half. Me, I would have likely started him in the 2nd half, not benched him.
Now, no doubt “reaching potential” is an extremely subjective measurement, which is why my opinion is not based on pre-season expectations but the game in game out evaluation of a team over a season. Certainly I understand and accept others will have different approaches, criteria and very differing opinions.

Gotta agree that this is a year that we had a team exceed expectations EXCEPT for the Polar Bear who has been a major flop in walk year. The only reason he was at the all star game was because of the HR Contest and his past success. Boris probably cost him bucks on the new contract
