Max Hooper

The problem we had was getting the pass to an open man on time If you get it there 2 seconds late your spot of shooter is dead unless he also can go to the rim and create AS great .as Mullin was he did not have a quick 1st step but the team got him an open shot and made sure the pass was timely

Mullin was not FAST, but he was very QUICK with great anticipation, with or without the ball. It's one reason why he was always among the NBA steals leaders. He also had a very quick release (not unlike Bill Bradley). Mullin did not have to rely on teammates - they relied on him to deliver them the ball. It helped that he was a great ball handler for his size, and could nail a shot from 25 feet and in consistently, as well as being able to get off his jumper while being shadowed.

Discussing Chris and Max in same sentence is like comparing Mike Rice attributes to Gandhi.

Was not making a comparison betw Hooper .and Chris only trying
.
point out that we were poor at hitting an open shooter as well as set picks for the shooter to lose his man enabling him to get off
a shot It is a skill that I hope . will be much. improved next yr

I'm hoping he becomes a lesser version of Steve Novak from behind the arc. The kind of guy who comes in and drills a couple of 3's and gets the crowd jacked up

As long as we're hoping, let's hope he becomes a better version of Steve Novak from behind the arc!

FWIW Novak shot 46.1% from beyond the arc in his college career. 4th best all time. One could only dream of a better version. ;)

I have faith in Max. Hes not going to be a savior, but he IMO, he will be what we were hoping Marco would be, someone that can come off the bench ,hit the 3 and keep defences honest.

I think that against actual competition, he will have to get a bit more elevation in his shot. Especially against athletic wing players who will look like human fly swatters if the jump in his shot is not a bit higher.

Given our size inside, let's hope we play an inside out type offense next year in the half court, in which case Sanchez will be dishing the ball out to a wide open Hooper for three ... Good!!! When Branch has more trust and flexibility in his knee, he'll also drive and dish with more success. Hooper will do fine if others do their jobs; not to mention D'Lo hitting his open shots and taking the ball to the hole (which he does well), which draws in the defense and leaves someone open.

For better or worse many St.J's fans have burdened Hooper with expectations.

Lets hope that Max proves the recruiting analysts who ranked him as a 2** recruit wrong and that he proves to be a bigger time contributor in the Big East than he was against the non scholarship players in the Ivy Lrague.

Please understand I am not attempting to criticize Max Hooper but to temper excessive expectations of stardom among St.John's faithful (recall can't miss stars Curtis Redding, Alpha Bangura, Curtis Akins, and others).

If we get 4 ppg out of him I'll be happy. That's really all I'm expecting. If anyone has him penciled in for double digits I think they are setting themselves up for intense burning anger toward both Max and the staff.

I agree with you both. The guy is a 2** recruit. There is a You tube video with him hitting a billion shots. That is great but let's see what happens in a game at a fast pace with hands in his face.
I would be very happy if he can come off the bench and hit 2 to 3 shots a game.

One player no ones ever seen play in a two man game with another player no ones ever seen play in an offense we don't run. Sounds about right.

Lets say the kid is more than capable of getting double digits It all depends on his overall game and were coach places him and how much time pg he gets I think most are under estimating his ability

Hooper is an excellent shooter, but will be a role-player. He isn't going to create his own shots often and will need screens to do it. I think we can create more opportunities now though, with another big guy or two up front like Sanchez and Gift. Our biggest problem is that nobody had to guard our interior players. Different when we have more guys that can score in the paint. Even Gift can't be left alone like Obekpa can. Sanchez should help a ton next to jakarr. It makes it harder for teams to pack it in.

I don't expect Hooper to be much more than a guy who provides a shooting threat off the bench. If he's more then great.

You're so right. Kentucky is picked as the #1 team next year by some rankings based solely on ratings for a bunch of kids you haven't seen either. Does that sound about right as well you clown? As for the "offense we don't run", did we not play an inside out game at times 2 years ago with this same Coach when Hardy was hitting shots from the outside as the defense collapsed on Burrell and Brownlee down low? Wake up.

Wake up? Saying we ran something with a different group of guys means nothing. These kids havent shown any type of inside out game. And thats with Bourgault on the floor. As for Kentcuky, nobody said that sounded right. They were projected as the number two team last year and ended up getting a one seed, to the nit. So nobody jumping to a conclusion that they are the best, except UK fans. I get it your saying lavin ran the inside out game two years ago, which first of all I dont even remember, the point fun is making is you dont know hooper and sanchez. Sanchez might be the next sampson, chucking from the elbow all game long. Hooper might choke in game situations, but even if they both do their jobs, lavin hasnt run this inside out offense with this group of kids, so why would he start now? If hes such a genius at that type of game shouldnt he have tried with sampson and bourgault. He didnt, so why would he now?

Not really the same analogy and I am being very polite.
The recruiting experts are in unanimous agreement that in 2013-14 UK is bringing in the best high school player at 4 out of 5 positions as well as 2-3 other top 30 players. This is the greatest recruiting class ever on paper. In addition the cupboard is not bare. They will be great next season barring injury.
Not to be comical but the floor coach of Lavin's first SJU team works in Charlotte and not at SJU.
