Max Hooper

For better or worse many St.J's fans have burdened Hooper with expectations.

Lets hope that Max proves the recruiting analysts who ranked him as a 2** recruit wrong and that he proves to be a bigger time contributor in the Big East than he was against the non scholarship players in the Ivy Lrague.

Please understand I am not attempting to criticize Max Hooper but to temper excessive expectations of stardom among St.John's faithful (recall can't miss stars Curtis Redding, Alpha Bangura, Curtis Akins, and others).

If we get 4 ppg out of him I'll be happy. That's really all I'm expecting. If anyone has him penciled in for double digits I think they are setting themselves up for intense burning anger toward both Max and the staff.

I agree with you both. The guy is a 2** recruit. There is a You tube video with him hitting a billion shots. That is great but let's see what happens in a game at a fast pace with hands in his face.
I would be very happy if he can come off the bench and hit 2 to 3 shots a game.
The reason he was a 2 star recruit is because he he 1 dimentional. Harvard was loaded w intellegent shooters. Lets face it thats a need for us and he will help us off the bench.

You're so right. Kentucky is picked as the #1 team next year by some rankings based solely on ratings for a bunch of kids you haven't seen either. Does that sound about right

I've your ad hominem argument to save the mods the trouble of deleting it. I trust in the future you will confine your remarks to basketball, lest swift and terrible justice befall you.

Anyway, It's true that Kentucky is picked #1 based solely on ratings for a bunch of kids I've never seen. Presumably though the guys picking Kentucky as #1 have seen them. See, that's where your analogy falls flat. You're postulating an offense based on players you've never seen. And not only that, but the people who have seen Hooper said he's worth two stars. It's not like he's a 5 star recruit and I'm saying he's lousy. He's a two star recruit and you're all SWISH! GOOD! SWISH! like he's the second coming of Heath Orvis or something.

As for the "offense we don't run", did we not play an inside out game at times 2 years ago?

Excellent question and I'm glad you asked. No, we didn't.

Also Otis
Chuckie Sproiling, Marcus (or was that Horace) Broadnax, Evander (last name?Lewis? from upstate?) Justin Burrell,
but then there were players that exceeded expectations - I believe - such as Mark Jackson, Jayson Williams, Willie Glass, from Syracuse Sherman Douglas, and...
I recall Mark J. was the third best NYC point out of three and Louie saying he would take the first to commit…

I realize one could argue that each of these players who played well were highly ranked and each of the players that were disappointing were not that highly ranked - highly subjective arena here just as wiwth what 2013-14 will bring

the point being one never really knows before hand who will blossom and who will flop and who will be right on predicted target….not to account for injuries such as Uncle Mo
;)
all the best

Wake up? Saying we ran something with a different group of guys means nothing. These kids havent shown any type of inside out game. And thats with Bourgault on the floor. As for Kentcuky, nobody said that sounded right. They were projected as the number two team last year and ended up getting a one seed, to the nit. So nobody jumping to a conclusion that they are the best, except UK fans. I get it your saying lavin ran the inside out game two years ago, which first of all I dont even remember, the point fun is making is you dont know hooper and sanchez. Sanchez might be the next sampson, chucking from the elbow all game long. Hooper might choke in game situations, but even if they both do their jobs, lavin hasnt run this inside out offense with this group of kids, so why would he start now? If hes such a genius at that type of game shouldnt he have tried with sampson and bourgault. He didnt, so why would he now?

Sampson's not a post player, so how and why would you run an inside out game with a guy who prefers to shoot from the foul line? By the way, Fun has no point, he's strictly on here to stir the pot.

He is 6-8 he could play inside if the team and coach's wanted him their But next yr he will help us more being and doing and playing the position where coach has. him

At the very least he can shoot something not many players Lavins recrutied here can do..and in todays college game you need shooters

Disagreeing with people's basketball observations is fine. Debating their opinions is fine. Adding humor (which is definitely in the eye of the beholder) is fine, generally.

Attacking or "calling out" other posters - even ones you don't like or think had some other name on some other website sometime or whatever - is not. So please stick to topic, which is not each other.

Jnaw this isn't directed solely at you, but your post here is a good current example of the problem, so that's why it's the one I'm using.

Fair enough. Point taken.

Wonder how many stars JLin had? That kid did it all out of HS. West coast kid, Lavin gatta get us one of them. A 2 star that's gonna. B all star. Coach Cal not goin. After Those kids.

Never having seen him play, here's two things I know and like about Hooper:

• He's working his rear end off getting ready for the season. If you follow his Twitter feed, he's wearing out the nets at Taffner. Yeah, it's not Big East game conditions but I like the work ethic and attitude.
• From the Newsday article in the Sampson/McGary thread – worth a read if you haven't seen it – he's the kind of guy that fits in and is a steadying influence on a team with high-end talent.

If he can play a lick, it bodes well for next season.

It's a nice thought to land kinds like that, but Lin is an extreme case of under-recruitment. You could urinate from the front lawn of Palo Alto H.S. and hit the Stanford campus, and they didn't want him.

And it's probably easier to unearth kids like that if they are on the same side of the country as you.

plus he has a high BB IQ.

Good post. It's up to the staff and his teammates to get him open shot. I can't imagine a better player in the country to be take open shots, though. AUTOMATIC.

Something to watch for.

If you take a look at Hooper's workout pics, Jakarr is taking 3 pointers.

Looks like he's expanding his game. He'll need that to legitimize himself as an NBA SF.

Sampson improving at SF also allows more time for Obekpa and Sanchez to be in there together.

anyone buying this hype I got a bridge to sell ya. Last year it was Bourgault who was the best shooter Lavin ever saw and drew comparisons to John Paxson yet he stayed glued to the bench most of the year. Hooper played 2 mins a game at Harvard and now he's gonna get PT on a team that has more depth then any team we've had in recent memory? I can hear the excuses now, "he cant play D", "too slow" "blah blah blah".
