Usguard - thank you. For thanking. max. Please . Continue. Your morse code lessons. You. Are. Improving.

He wasn't always like this. He'd better be an old man whose children got him a new electronic device and he's clueless about using it. Otherwise there is no excuse whatsoever.

LOL! if I can interpret Choz's Ebonics I can interpret Usguard.

Over the years posters on this site have had exaggerated expectations regarding Nurideen Lindsey, Marco Bourgault, FX Ryan, Alpha Bangura, Curtis Aken, Heath Orvis, Omar Cook, Elijah Ingram, and others before the player had ever played a game at St.John's.

Lets hope that Max lives up to the lofty expectations which posters on this site are placing on him by posters, many of whom have never seen him play in a game.

C'mon, Otis! LOL It's just a fluff piece. You can go to any message board and find some exaggerated expectations on players. Those same expectations can be placed upon 4 and 5-star players, as well. Quite a few of those players haven't lived up to some lofty expectations, either.

I was one of the one's who bought into Lindsey. But I'll still say he was his own worst enemy. That's a subject for another day. Regardless, I was wrong.

Some of the other players you've mentioned were probably "hyped up" (if they were hyped up at all) based on wishful thinking (ie, Ryan Williams, Bangura, and Orvis). Just some folks trying to reach for straws, per se'.

Nevertheless, I haven't really seen anyone "hype up" Hooper. But I do know or have heard that he's put in alot of work to better his game. The year off has really helped him grow as a player.

I've noticed you mention this several times before, so I'm wondering if it bothers you when some posters "hype up" players and they do not live up to those expectations.

Are you bothered by the posters for "hyping up" the players, and you knowingly buy into it? Just curious.

By the way, I doubt we had a board to post on during the days of Curtis Aiken. :ngrin:

The goods news is we have not had a shooter like this since Mullin. He could be a better pure shooter No way am I comparing him to Chris just his shooting skill It is nice to have that kind of fire power. I would not be surprised if he grabs a starting spot Will be interesting what coach will do with him

we have not had a shooter like this since mullin?
slow down. hooper has not played a game.
I recall dwight hardy being quite the shooter.
i hope he can shoot nearly that well.
lets see him play.
alot of reason of for optimism this season.
i see us as an ncaa team for sure.
however lets not use hooper and mullin in the same sentence. maybe fred lyson. maybe.

Agreed...although I don't think Omar Cook belongs in that group. He was amazing as a freshman and a one-and-done.
I think Max will be a good addition to the team. He knows his role and, he has swagger, and he doesn't seem to have a conscience. Bourgault probably has the better all-around game, but he's really better suited to be a starter on a mid-major rather than a designated shooter for a high major. Max looks the part of the three-point assassin thus far.

Max doesn't have to be a Mullen. All he has to do, is come off the bench and provide an offensive spark. The fact that he is 6 6" doesn't hurt either.

I just hope Max can hold his own defensively and on the backboards enough to justify being on the floor. He's likely going to spend a lot of time on one of the back corners of the zone which will not be a fun place to be against Georgetown and Marquette when a shot goes up.

If he can do that, it appears he has the knockdown shooter piece down. Not saying it's a given, but that's the part I expect him to have covered. It was a small sample size but he was sniping in Europe. You either have that ability or you don't. There are a lot of guys who are billed as good shooters. I would put Max in a different category as a guy who has a chance to be a true spot-up, give him space and he sticks it automatic kind of shooter. Those are far more rare.

If he proves it those kind of players can have an impact on offense just by checking into the game, spacing the floor for the kind of dribble-penetrators we have. The expectations for him shouldn't be anything more than a role player, but his role if he can fill it is an important one.

When I was a kid, the best part of being a Mets fan was the offseason, and then secondly spring training. They'd acquire some guy like Don Bosch, who was supposed to be a stellar centerfielder, and all winter your hopes would be raised. Spring training was similar. The team that never came close to .500 would get out of the gates 11-4 in spring training and you would imagine how good the team would be. One year they trade for a guy who was once a can't miss with the Dodgers, Derrell Griffith. At one point in Mets spring training he was hitting well above .300, and it looked like we had a star in the making. Of course, he cooled off, didn't make the squad, and never played another big league game. As Casey Stengel would say, "And you can look it up."

This kind of stuff is the second best part of being a fan - the hope and anticipation that things will turn out great. It's a little bit like looking forward to a vacation. I'm okay with fans getting excited about players, even if they don't always work out.

Agree completely on Max v. Marco. That is the exact point I was trying to make a few posts up. Sometimes teams try to fit guys who have shooting ability into spot-up shooter roles. No disrespect to him, but that's not really Marco's game. He wasn't given a ton of opportunity, but that's just it, spot-up shooters often aren't and they need to be able to make a good % of the shots they get. I think Max has the potential to do that. Like you said, Marco is a guy who can do some other things for you, and at a different level would make a bunch of shots for you if playing 20-25 mpg.

Likewise.

It happens on each and every, message board. That doesn't make it right. It's just what some fans do when it comes to their team.

I bet most people have, at one point, overrated a player on their respective team(s). Being we're on a message board, then you're always gonna have, at least, one person "hype up" a newcomer or player(s) in general.

That is still the best part of being a Mets fan...that and the farm system. Looking forward to Alex Ochoa got me through like three years alone.

Chris Mullin was one of the best College BB players of his era. Really any era. As a pro, he further demonstrated that his talent was HOF caliber.

Max Hooper will not be in that category.

That being said, all we want from Hooper is the ability to drill the 3 pt jumper, make free throws and be a good teammate. We should not care whether he starts or can play defense or rebound.

If he could average between 8-10 points a game, with the occasional 12-15 points outburst, we will win a lot more games than we did last year.If Max can do that, we can contend for the BE Championship.

We'll see soon.
