Marquette Game

Hopefully the next time these two teams meet, SJU will be punching its card to the dance. I love the last ten games of the schedule. Catching Xavier is not out of the question after its loss today!

Going back to my tennis analogy, winning at Providence gets us to deuce. Holding serve against Creighton is a must, and then breaking again on the road against anyone (which won't be easy at all) to get to Ad. Ad puts us at 10-8. So, they have to keep winning at home, and win the winnable road games (Providence, SHU). Now if they do all this, they'd still have to pull of a win at Nova, which would seal the deal and put them at 11 wins. I'm not excited because I don't think it's happening, and just seeing them play well for now is enough for me.

I am hoping the team is finally turning the corner with the recent wins and close losses. Today, against another good team with similar struggles, we put it all together. The next two games are huge and will decide whether we will be in the top six by the end of the season. If we are we have the depth to play 3 games without fatigue issues and hope for a miracle with 3 wins to the final is still a possibility.
As for the game, all the players played well but Harrison played his best game of the year by far but I was again impressed by the new and improved Obekpa and the penetration and passing of Rysheed Jordan. Hopefully the coaches are lighting a fire under the culo of Primo by having him come off the bench.
Our collective mediocre records (Gtown, Marquette and SJ) kept attendance a little over 12,500 but the Gtown win over #7 Michigan State was a signature win for the hated Hoyas and the new Big East.

I actually agree on all accounts! Winning does bring the fans together :)
These next two games are huge...the biggest of the season. The team entered with an RPI of 75 and could go to sleep eight days from now with an RPI inside 50 and a 15-9 record with six "should-wins" left and a payback game @ Nova that I think we can win three weeks from now. Things are looking up, but a loss at Providence will shut that door real fast. They HAVE to beat Providence.

Anyone notice Harrison really hitting the boards the last few games?

To be fair, he has been bringing it all year on the glass. Lately, a little more than usual.

You are right. I just noticed tremendous effort in a couple of games recently.

Marquette also shot horribly today. Harrison made shots today in two major runs. Other than what I've called poor shooting, I think he's been busting it all year. When you win fans want to praise everything, and when you close they want to tear down everything. Except that when we went 0-5, the predominant call was for firing Lavin. Is anyone giving him credit for the turnaround of winning 3 of 4 conference games with the 4th coming down to a shot w two seconds to go? There is and always has been a good amount of depth on this team. The reasons we haven't executed in the last 5 minutes of a game are still there. On the other hand, the fact remains that we've lost comfortably only ONCE this season.

I agree with the tennis analogy. It is exceedingly difficult to sweep a decent team for a variety of reasons: game-planning usually favors the loser, the loser is almost always hungrier, etc. I don't think this team needs to win the rest of the games. If they lose one game (say Creighton or @Nova), they can still finish 11-7 in conference and with 21 wins on the year. I think that is good enough for a bid to the big dance. If they lose two, they'll have some work to do in the tournament. In either scenario, the RPI will be very strong. Gtown and Nova did the entire conference a huge favor today with wins away from home. Penn State is also quietly about to win its third Big Ten game in a row tomorrow (I predict). Ga Tech won today, and those two winning only helps us.

Things appear to improving with the team. CO and GG are playing their best ball. The main rotation is finally starting to become clear, and guys who should be getting minutes, like Branch and Jordan, are while the guys who shouldn't like Dom and Sanchez, are seeing less and less with each week
.
The remaining schedule is awesome. 5 home games vs. 4 road games. Two of those road games are against teams in the bottom half of the conference, including the final game against a Marquette team they just took apart, who will be playing for absolutely nothing. It all starts at Providence. This is the most important two-game stretch we've seen in years, but they need to take care of business at Providence or the margin of error and the energy of a great five-game streak will have completely disappeared

In my book, Lavin gets a modest dose of credit. Modest because it took him far too long into the season
to recognize what many fans were calling for from the exhibition games on....that is, recognizing that he had to have point guards driving the game on the floor, not DP or PG or even Harrison.
How exasperated were most posters watching us stick to a two guard lineup with Branch and the potential rookie of the year sitting on the bench most of the time, most games. Of all the criticisms of Lavin, this is one I have never been able to excuse. I'm just grateful he finally stumbled into it when PG had to miss a game for personal reasons. I still am glad Lavin is our coach for his many other attributes, excluding game management.

And by the way Redmen.com sometimes poster most times lurker Shaun L was the guy they called up there during the game to hit the 3 shots and win I think an iPad or something like that. Totally wiffed the free throw was all net on the 3 pointer and missed the half court shot.

At least he won a pair of tickets to the next game and the 33% shooting would put him high on our team :) He's a good dude. Him and his brother Cole game out to the UCLA game and met us at our redmen.com party out there

Wasn't his first name Dave or Jeff or something? He had really good form, and while his halfcourt shot wasn't as close as DLo's to end the first half, he did a nice job. So did the second kid who played that game.
Nah definitely Shaun.Just didn't want to put his last name up here for anonymity purposes I've met him a bunch of times the last few years

Pomeroy now has us at #50 as a result of this game. Providence is at 47.
Marquette played Providence 2-3 days ago and had them by 19 or so in the first half before PC made a come
back. They , MU, won going away after PC got to close to 6 in the second half.
Providence will be favored by 2 against us but, I think, If we play a full game, STJ should
beat PC by 8 or more. We now have just too many proven weapons to handle by them.

Give credit to coach Lavin, he has shortened the rotation and stuck with the guys who deserve the big minutes. He's also gone heavy on the 3 guard lineup and it seems to have paid dividends. Let's keep the momentum going and he'll be due even more credit.
Fact remains though that he made questionable decisions down the stretch in the DePaul and providence losses, so he shouldn't be out of the dog house. Those losses will sting for awhile.

And you keep saying no comfortable loses besides gtown, but the Wisconsin game was not that close. We fought back, but they were always in control. And at Xavier we completely fell apart. Another game that wasn't exactly a nail bitter.

I hear you, but we don't know what goes on at practice. Maybe there are some talented kids that just don't execute in practice. My cousin started some games at RB at Don Bosco when Ryan Grant was there one year, because Grant a few other more talented players couldn't remember/execute the plays in practice. He could play RB in the wing-t in his sleep.

We have 2 point guards. It's hard to believe both weren't executing in practice. The question is what took Lavin so long to realize Phil should not be the PG?

All about defense; maybe they are starting to get it. Providence is a huge game (obviously.)

Wowwwww I need that t-shirt that D'Angelo Harrison is wearing in the post game interview!!! The STJ with the Crown on it! So dope!!

Why didn`t they make that T-Shirt before the Syracuse game??? I would have rocked that shirt in the 200level with it being 95% Cuse fans up there in the 200s
Since I said I won`t be back till march, they`re 3-1 with the only loss being Dougies 3pointer at the end, and I`m superstitious so I`ll stay away.
They`re still 3-6 so they shouldn`t be happy. The only time they`d should be alittle happy is when they get back to 500 and not before that goal. Back to work today for a few hrs before the SB party and work on monday before going to pc on Tuesday. We owe them.
Gotta keep working and continue to get better.

Did not see the post game. Anybody have a link to that shirt?

I think Massell summed it up perfectly and in a nutshell.

We struggle mightily against teams who have guards who can shoot.

Bottom line.

Whether it's not being able to stay with guards or not rotating properly to open shooters or whatever. If teams have guards who can shoot, we are in trouble.

Thanks, TIS. That is indeed an awesome shirt Harrison is wearing. Should be available to all.

Who was our point guard in 2010-2011?

It was less of an issue. Guys like DJ, Hardy and Brownlee all were average or above-average passers. Each avg 2+assists.
If our sg, sf, pf did that, then it would be less of an issue for this team too. But Sampson Harrison Greene aren't as adept at seeing the floor.
