Marquette Game

Not sure what was more surprising; the blow-out win or Mike Maher showing up before tip off?

Mike, make sure you show up early next Sunday night.

This team is shooting 39% from three over the past five games. And that includes the 1 for 10 at Creighton.

Could it be possible that the post move Obepka made vs Creighton with his back to the basket moving to his left and banking in an 8 footer is a sign of things to come?
He made it look so easy and for a team so offensively challenged in the half court it would be a dream come through.
I hope both his and Jordan's minutes and responsibilities increase for the rest of the year.

Another nice game from Obekpa, two in a row. Raf or Johnson said that Jordan missed a practice due to his mother's illness. Please tell me that wasn't the reason Lavin didn't start him.

His demeanor on the bench didn't seem to suggest someone who was in the doghouse.

1st thing I looked for and saw same thing...Initially ticked but then rationalized that it may have been Lavin's way of changing the recurring theme of quick fouls...he entered game less than 4 minutes into game

We did look very good today but Marquette has been a team that has struggled offensively this year. Let's see how we do the next two games

Yeah it was real strange showing up early. Now I know what it's like not to stand at the security line for 15 minutes waiting for them to wand everyone. I'll be there early on sunday. I think :)

Getting to our seats even earlier since I wasn't waiting on the bronx pale ale line today which sometimes moves slower than security. Doubt that I won't be on that line on sunday for my 1st half beer

Just got back from the game, after travelling uptown for a bit. Time Square is jammed with Superbowl fans, and that was even evident in Penn Station and outside the Garden. When I got back to the Garden ran into Monasch and said to him , "Really nice win today. We played well". He responded, "Yea, it was nice. About time."

Comments about the game:

I've said this before. home and homes are like tennis. Even before the game we were down a break (lost 2 at home, won 1 away). So today we held serve, convincingly. Even at 3-6, we'd project at 8-10 right now, unless we break back. Winning at Providence would get us to deuce, with a 2 game disparity home vs. away. Huge game Tuesday, and I'm thinking of making the trip.

Harrison had just two runs today for his 25 points. Eleven in a hurry to get us back in the game in the first half after we fell behind 6-0, and then 14 in close succession to push our lead to 20+. It was the type of game I think he is capable of, and it makes some of the game I've classified as stinkers (and IMO there are a lot of them) look way below his potential.

At one point Jordan had zero points, but 7 assists. He also fought for and grabbed 3 rebounds - not the fall in your hands variety. Some of those assists were dazzling and precise at the same time. It was the version of Mack the Knife - a blur, and you never saw the blade, never a trace of red. One move in the second half that didn't result in a basket was a spin in traffic in the lane that totally shook a defender. Pure Earl Monroe. The kid when/if his game catches up to his talents, could be the best point we've ever had (yes MJ fans, it's true). But for now he's far below that, but we can dream.

Blocks - 7 in the first half alone, and I haven't seen the game stats yet, but with or without Obekpa, this team has been challenging everything down low.

Very quietly we've won 3 of 4 conference games, and as we all know, we could be 8-1 if we didn't develop manos de piedra in the last 3 minutes of games.

I'll try to upload some cell phone pics I took of the stands. The attendance of SJU fans was not too good.

And by the way Redmen.com sometimes poster most times lurker Shaun L was the guy they called up there during the game to hit the 3 shots and win I think an iPad or something like that. Totally wiffed the free throw was all net on the 3 pointer and missed the half court shot.

At least he won a pair of tickets to the next game and the 33% shooting would put him high on our team :) He's a good dude. Him and his brother Cole game out to the UCLA game and met us at our redmen.com party out there

Wasn't his first name Dave or Jeff or something? He had really good form, and while his halfcourt shot wasn't as close as DLo's to end the first half, he did a nice job. So did the second kid who played that game.

Odd response from an AD. No?

Yea I was thinking the same. I would think he would more excited or PC . Sometimes as fans who follow the program so closely we can over analyze and read into things. But I hope Monasch and Lavin are on the same page

I've run into Monasch before outside arenas. He's not the warmest and fuzziest guy - short answers and not engaging. I read it as he is frustrated by the late game failures just as we are, and thinks our team should be doing much better.

Impressive win. Harrison was unstoppable today. As someone else said, this was very reminiscent of the Fordham game, but never would have expected it against Marquette.
Players played. D'Lo looked All-American, CO all conference. All the guys played with purpose. These guys have been through rough times. I'm hoping playing locked in like they did becomes the only way.

Walking into the Dartmouth game two weeks ago I was very disappointed in the team's progress and tonight I may be drinking Lavin's kool aid but I'm feeling better about the program then at anytime since that Pittsburgh game under Jarvis which must be 10 yrs ago.
Even if things don't work out this year as we hope there will be a strong nucleus returning and if Obepka and/or Sampson become the player(s) we think they can be and Jordan improves which looks to be a sure thing next year could be special.
The kool aid tells me there is no chance of any pro talk.

Just got back from the game, and spending time along Super Bowl Boulevard. My thoughts: (Sorry couldn't get bullets working.)

* DLo had an incredible game. I know I'm just echoing what I'm sure so many posters have already said.
* Rysheed should be running the point. End of story.
* I really, REALLY, like that back-court combo of Rysheed and Branch. Keep Phil coming off the bench.
* Every game I am more and more impressed with God's Gift. When he's defending down low, and the other team's big man is backing up into God's Gift, it looks like the other guy is backing up into a brick wall. God's Gift just does not move!
* Sanchez, despite playing a little better in the second half, is still a major disappointment.
* There were times when we were not moving well without the ball at all. That is still disappointing to see at this stage.
* Some of Lavin's moves mystify me, as they do a lot of posters here, but the one thing I was calling for at the end of the game was to remove Harrison all by himself so we fans can show him our appreciation for the game he played today. Harrison came out with someone else, I forget who, and I was disappointed in that.
*Jakarr had some good, and bad, moves on the court today, but overall, I liked his play.
* Finally, if I don't see Hooper on the court again for the rest of the year, I'm OK with that. :)

I didn't stay for the second game, but that was a nice win by Georgetown and only further embellished the Big East today.

Can't wait for Creighton next Sunday. But we have some business to take care of first in Providence.

Over and out.

My take on this one...

I love the fact that Branch has been averaging 20 mpg the last four games. I feared that might have been a fad, but I think it is here to stay, especially after Buzz's comments. That is hard to ignore as a coach.

GG gives us great minutes. I don't care how bad his hands are, he works twice as hard as Sanchez, and he knows his role better than anyone on the team. I am very thankful he was redshirted. I think he would have played more than 12 minute if we weren't up so much.

Obekpa has just played the best two-game stretch of his career. We are a better team with him in the game. He creates at both ends. 3 offensive boards today and a little offense to boot. He knows his role as well. He almost certainly would have had a triple double if he played 30+ minutes, but 7-7-7 in just 21 minutes against a good frontline is just fantastic.

Not thrilled with Sanchez and Pointer getting a combined 36 minutes but there was a lot of garbage time and neither started--that is a step in the right direction. Pointer had another second half turnover, Sanchez had three to's on the game and made a three at the end that I hope won't encourage him. His minutes need to be reduced and he needs to be refocused because he can still be a great part of the tool lot for this team.

Jamil Wilson is the perfect example of a kid that is playing way outside his game. He was great as a role player when he wasn't asked to overextend himself, but he is a sloppy disaster of a main cog.

I like the frosh Deonte Burton a lot.

Marquette has a lot of players named Wilson.

Hopefully the next time these two teams meet, SJU will be punching its card to the dance. I love the last ten games of the schedule. Catching Xavier is not out of the question after its loss today!

I am hoping the team is finally turning the corner with the recent wins and close losses. Today, against another good team with similar struggles, we put it all together. The next two games are huge and will decide whether we will be in the top six by the end of the season. If we are we have the depth to play 3 games without fatigue issues and hope for a miracle with 3 wins to the final is still a possibility.
As for the game, all the players played well but Harrison played his best game of the year by far but I was again impressed by the new and improved Obekpa and the penetration and passing of Rysheed Jordan. Hopefully the coaches are lighting a fire under the culo of Primo by having him come off the bench.
Our collective mediocre records (Gtown, Marquette and SJ) kept attendance a little over 12,500 but the Gtown win over #7 Michigan State was a signature win for the hated Hoyas and the new Big East.
