Marquette Game

what is that chant from the band every time someone gets fouled? does anyone know?

it goes something like: you, you, you...out, out, out

We have 2 point guards. It's hard to believe both weren't executing in practice. The question is what took Lavin so long to realize Phil should not be the PG?

Who was our point guard in 2010-2011?

It was less of an issue. Guys like DJ, Hardy and Brownlee all were average or above-average passers. Each avg 2+assists.
If our sg, sf, pf did that, then it would be less of an issue for this team too. But Sampson Harrison Greene aren't as adept at seeing the floor.

Greene isn't a guard who distributes the ball well, but neither was Hardy. Hardy was also a below average ball handler. When opponents pressed, Boothe had to be on the floor. I'm not arguing for Greene to be on the floor - I'm arguing that he were a more prolific scorer, the team would be wining without having a point guard on the court. As it stands both Jordan and Branch can play the point, although Jordan is a lot more points oriented than running an offense.

I am hoping the team is finally turning the corner with the recent wins and close losses. Today, against another good team with similar struggles, we put it all together. The next two games are huge and will decide whether we will be in the top six by the end of the season. If we are we have the depth to play 3 games without fatigue issues and hope for a miracle with 3 wins to the final is still a possibility.
As for the game, all the players played well but Harrison played his best game of the year by far but I was again impressed by the new and improved Obekpa and the penetration and passing of Rysheed Jordan. Hopefully the coaches are lighting a fire under the culo of Primo by having him come off the bench.
Our collective mediocre records (Gtown, Marquette and SJ) kept attendance a little over 12,500 but the Gtown win over #7 Michigan State was a signature win for the hated Hoyas and the new Big East.

All good points...most encouraging sign of progress is fact that Obekpa is obviously working on stuff...

i dont know if anyone agrees but I think sanchez is useless at the big east level... i want to see jordan play most of the game, he has talent! branch should also get 20 min (good defense and passing;no offense) i like it when at least 2 out of 3 of (jordan, branch, and pointer) is in the game and we pressure. if obekpa sustains this recent rise to an average offensive big man we might have something! To me god's gift and sanchez should split leftover minutes, but our big guys are not the strength of the team

Only a few games ago CO looked horrible. Now he is back to his old self on D and best of all is developing an offensive game.Im not sure what changed ,maybe he was sick for longer than we thought.I love the new CO.

CO looks like Bill Russell, Lavin is John Wooden and Rysheed is living up to those Jason kidd comparisons. There is no excuse for not making a Final Four run.

Is not making the tournament a good excuse for not making a Final Four run?

It will be difficult without it.

Went looking for other scores on ESPN. com several hours after our game and noticed that they don't supply scores of BE schools either in a timely fashion or perhaps SJU was an oversight. Anyone else notice the absence of BE scores on espn on a regular basis. If it's a competitive move, it's childish. If it's an oversight the BE better improve soon.

I've noticed that as well trying to get St Johns scores

Didn't notice it on ESPN during sports center or at half of Syracuse game. They mentioned Gtown's big win and showed highlights. Also Dickie V mentioned
player of the year Dougie McD's 39 points against St. John's and he stated everyone of those points was needed in a very close game.

Disagree. This is the kind of linear thinking that makes teams suck. Green has a respectable ability to score. The problem is that basketball is a team sport. Green is totally disruptive to the offense as the primary ball handler. If he scored 20 a game it would not be a net gain. If he scored 20 a game however primarily on offensive rebounds and in the role of a backup 2g then it would be much more of a net gain. Green has just a few more assists for the season in a lot more minutes than Obekpa. Yes he rarely turns the ball over and he deserves credit for that, but that does not make him a point guard or effective in a team offense. Gift btw has the same number of turnovers for the season as Green. Not meaning to knock Green, but am meaning to knock how he has been used.

Just got back from the game, after travelling uptown for a bit. Time Square is jammed with Superbowl fans, and that was even evident in Penn Station and outside the Garden. When I got back to the Garden ran into Monasch and said to him , "Really nice win today. We played well". He responded, "Yea, it was nice. About time."

Comments about the game:

I've said this before. home and homes are like tennis. Even before the game we were down a break (lost 2 at home, won 1 away). So today we held serve, convincingly. Even at 3-6, we'd project at 8-10 right now, unless we break back. Winning at Providence would get us to deuce, with a 2 game disparity home vs. away. Huge game Tuesday, and I'm thinking of making the trip.

Harrison had just two runs today for his 25 points. Eleven in a hurry to get us back in the game in the first half after we fell behind 6-0, and then 14 in close succession to push our lead to 20+. It was the type of game I think he is capable of, and it makes some of the game I've classified as stinkers (and IMO there are a lot of them) look way below his potential.

At one point Jordan had zero points, but 7 assists. He also fought for and grabbed 3 rebounds - not the fall in your hands variety. Some of those assists were dazzling and precise at the same time. It was the version of Mack the Knife - a blur, and you never saw the blade, never a trace of red. One move in the second half that didn't result in a basket was a spin in traffic in the lane that totally shook a defender. Pure Earl Monroe. The kid when/if his game catches up to his talents, could be the best point we've ever had (yes MJ fans, it's true). But for now he's far below that, but we can dream.

Blocks - 7 in the first half alone, and I haven't seen the game stats yet, but with or without Obekpa, this team has been challenging everything down low.

Very quietly we've won 3 of 4 conference games, and as we all know, we could be 8-1 if we didn't develop manos de piedra in the last 3 minutes of games.

I'll try to upload some cell phone pics I took of the stands. The attendance of SJU fans was not too good.
Odd response from an AD. No?

I've run into Monasch before outside arenas. He's not the warmest and fuzziest guy - short answers and not engaging. I read it as he is frustrated by the late game failures just as we are, and thinks our team should be doing much better.

Way,way back when I lived in N.Y. and a season ticket holder I would see Monasch at Alumni Hall. Apparently he was a commissioner of a league (?) and attended their games. Anytime I saw him there was a smile on his face and appeared to be popular with the press corps. Can you believe it?

It really isn't fair of me to draw a characterization of Monasch based on encountering him outside arenas a few times for a few seconds each time.

Some have drawn theirs from even further away. Monasch's tan would look a lot better if Norm had won.

If you were watching closely in the closing two minutes of garbage time, it got helter skelter for a few moments with Marquette trying to apply pressure as we played keepaway. One of our guards who has gotten some playing time almost covered instinctively up at halfcourt as he was pressured. Then almost as if history kicked in, he recovered and quickly got rid of the ball. Further evidence that the current rotation is the players who give us the best chance to win.

CO on the offensive glass. And ftr- Harrison is a great rebounder for a 2 guard.

He goes for boards like its a blank check. Two hands with authority. Times his jumps perfectly.

He really has rounded into a very solid defender as well, always been a good rebounder.

Hardy wasnt a great distributor but he was a solid passer and he did have a knack for making good passes in traffic. Also when we faced a press we would have DJ and Brownlee handle it in the backcourt with their size and passing ability, hardy and horne would get down the court. It was a great option to have.

Just one point, you say in reference to branch that he is a good passer but brings no offense. I say that good offense requires good passing. He makes Harrison and our bigs so much more dangerous. So does rysheed. When Phil is running the point he makes no one else better.

I wouldn't say useless, but I'm convinced we'd have more wins and the team would have already hit stride if he was never cleared. This team was a few wins from the bubble last year without a PG, with no experience, without any depth, and without GG. Sanchez can do a little bit of everything, but chooses to do the stuff that we don't need him to do. He has no concept of what his role should be. That isn't a problem with guys like GG and CO.

Right now we are better off with Obekpa in the game. He has a 10% higher FG% and he creates a ton of looks for himself and others off the offensive glass. He also doesn't shoot threes with a 73% failure rate, leaving one less big man down low to rebound. If you look closely, a lot of our prettiest plays start off with a nice down screen or back screen by Obekpa.

I'd like to see Sanchez play about 10-15 minutes of really focused basketball. Get the ball down low or on the baseline and use his skill advantage against other bigs. We don't need need a mediocore shooter or ball-handler...we need some points and rebounds down low and some solid screens with his wide body. He has good coordination and post moves and he is a good passer especially when he takes it baseline. He's also a solid rebounder when he's near the basket. If he can understand and accept that role, we become a much more dangerous team.
