Marquette Game Thread

I thought that Pointer might have done a better job on D on Mayo, but whateverr

Big win. Lots of mistakes but all things considered may have been our best win of the year, (on the road with everything at stake). Pretty good ball movement. DLo made some nice passes and even Sampson had a few assists. Jordan with huge plays, flashes of brilliance and then the reminder that he's only a freshmen at the end of regulation. Plenty of room for growth for these guys next year but it all comes down to this weekend. 3 days that can change our season and the entire perception of the program. Let's hope NYC comes out to support us.

..., Please, please don't ever wear those unis again!!

Now that we won...have to say this...as tough as they made this game (should have been a double digit win), a win on the road is still GREAT...to hang in despite blowing lead in last 11 seconds of regulation is very good...

one thing about this team..whether you like the coaching, the players etc...they don't get blown out - period...good play or bad play, we are always going to be in the game...which gives us a chance

Except when we play Georgetown on the Road... I really, really want to blow Georgetown out on their home floor next year.

That was Harrison's three

Funny story...My Mom (82 year old Johnnies fan) called me to ask me who made that 3...I said Harrison...She said I love him

Must have blocked that one out :)

We all get upset at times about the play of our team and decisions of the coach. The more important the game, it seems the more shrill are the posts every single time someone makes a mistake. Effectively, many of the posts cross into a kind of long-distance name-caling. This team is two games over five hundred at the season end because they were dysfunctional the first four months of the season. Given what they accomplished since then, they aren't pathethic, stupid, incompetent, embarassments to the schoold, or the worst "fill in the blank in our history."

I criticized the coach like many others for not playing Jordan early in the year enough and for the constant rotating of
bench players for major minutes. He has made plenty of mistakes. I am as frustrated as anyone by the missed foul shots and the unfocused turnovers. But proclaiming over and over again that the game is lost when there is plenty of time left betrays the effort to sound informed as mere petulant whining. Reiterating that some individual should never be on the floor or coach a high school team etc isn't a sports critique the 12 th time its repeated in the same game; and attacking other posters because they haven't crapped in their diapers with you in mid-game but are trying to retain some hope is what makes this site less and less engaging.

I would suggest each of us go back and read your own posts throughout the last game. See if you came across as a
nervous fan, or even temporarily upset at showing a bit of frustration, or did you come across as a sarcastic, self-righteous, condescending know-it-all. It might be more instructive than anything anyone else can say to you and it might make the Big East tournament threads a lot more incisive.

I was about to post something of the same effect. It's shocking that certain grown men on here have no control of their emotions. Reading this thread and some of the disgusting things that were said at low points in the game is embarrassing.

ive personally overreacted at times, but so are you here...there was nothing "disgusting" said so calm down. there was no attack on the players personally, no real personal attack on posters, just maybe the players basketball IQ and abilities.

mike don't go you will be missed for your positive posts don't go mike >:)

dont know how anyone remains positive after watching this....would be amongst worst losses in program history....right after we just gave our inept coach an extension.

If it would have been one of the worst loses in history on the road against a team that hardly ever loses at home on senior day with out big men fouled out in double
overtime, then what would you call the win.

A gutsy, needed victory that won't mean anything if we don't take care of business next week.

When I managed to stop screaming at the tube during the game I started to think if we lost and Gtown won, would it be possible for us to drop to seventh in the conference, win the 7-10 game, beat Creighton in the round of eight, lose in the semis, and still not make the tournament. So much wasted effort. I don't mind at all.

I posted something briefer this morning on another thread. The name calling on this site has really gotten out of hand, as has the use of profanity. It's the reason I will likely bail on this site until the fall if we should not get a bid or get knocked out early. It's just not enjoyable to be called an "idiot", "not so bright", or worse, because someone has a difference of opinion. Thanks for posting this, but I can tell you, had we lost and you posted this, you'd have to duck.

Post of the year. Much respect!!!

Nice try. Someone said God's Gift and Obepka should never play again. And that's just one instance.

Let's admit...there was panic at the end of regulation. Jordan's play...Sanchez missed first shot of a one and one...even the ref blew the Obekpa call and fouled him out. That was the biggest choke of all. Fans have a right to say that.

Still, I defy anyone to argue this team didn't show major sized onions in the two OT's against a good, well coached team that was fighting for its life at home on senior day.

They did, no doubt. Having said that, I believe this team has the talent and depth to challenge for a national championship. What we lack is "onions" for 40 minutes every game and understanding time, score and the importance of playing smart and situational as well as fast. I think many on the board confuse winning and good play, a team reaching their potential. Many also think think criticism during or after a win is somehow taboo because of the score or the final result. I respectfully disagree; dumb is dumb. Having said that, I will close with again agreeing with your point; it would have been very easy to call it a day after blowing the lead. Obviously they did not and serious kudos for that. Hopefully they can build on this, "get it" and do some real damage next week. Just as hopefully, Lavin learns that winning a close, hard fought game and still having a time out is smart, not wasteful.

Have we ever coughed up a 6 point lead with 11 seconds to go before? I don't remember it. Even more improbably, we recovered from it. Nice job.

Reminded me of the Reggie Miller game against the Knicks. Those 8 points in 9 seconds to steal a certain payday from me pretty much ended my gambling career.
