Marquette Game Thread

We all get upset at times about the play of our team and decisions of the coach. The more important the game, it seems the more shrill are the posts every single time someone makes a mistake. Effectively, many of the posts cross into a kind of long-distance name-caling. This team is two games over five hundred at the season end because they were dysfunctional the first four months of the season. Given what they accomplished since then, they aren't pathethic, stupid, incompetent, embarassments to the schoold, or the worst "fill in the blank in our history."

I criticized the coach like many others for not playing Jordan early in the year enough and for the constant rotating of
bench players for major minutes. He has made plenty of mistakes. I am as frustrated as anyone by the missed foul shots and the unfocused turnovers. But proclaiming over and over again that the game is lost when there is plenty of time left betrays the effort to sound informed as mere petulant whining. Reiterating that some individual should never be on the floor or coach a high school team etc isn't a sports critique the 12 th time its repeated in the same game; and attacking other posters because they haven't crapped in their diapers with you in mid-game but are trying to retain some hope is what makes this site less and less engaging.

I would suggest each of us go back and read your own posts throughout the last game. See if you came across as a
nervous fan, or even temporarily upset at showing a bit of frustration, or did you come across as a sarcastic, self-righteous, condescending know-it-all. It might be more instructive than anything anyone else can say to you and it might make the Big East tournament threads a lot more incisive.

I was about to post something of the same effect. It's shocking that certain grown men on here have no control of their emotions. Reading this thread and some of the disgusting things that were said at low points in the game is embarrassing.

ive personally overreacted at times, but so are you here...there was nothing "disgusting" said so calm down. there was no attack on the players personally, no real personal attack on posters, just maybe the players basketball IQ and abilities.

Nice try. Someone said God's Gift and Obepka should never play again. And that's just one instance.

If u think thats "disgusting" you need to toughen up.

Gods gift is a nice kid, but he shouldnt be playing.

Sure Mike...because the back-up big man on every other college team in the country is a sure-fire NBA star.

Your expectations for Gift might be a little too high. I see a guy with a strong body who gives us decent minutes in a back-up role, five hard fouls, protection against CO's foul trouble and, above all, is a great kid, student and teammate. There's room for him on my roster any day.

Just watched the game on DVR. Good thing i taped the Nova/Georgetown game afterwards. Big win! We showed incredible maturity and fight to stay composed after losing that 6 point lead with 11 secs to go. Rysheed, despite making a few mistakes, was confidence inspiring. He's a stud. D'Lo's shot... money. I wanted him to be more involved early in the game but happy to see he stepped up at the end. Phil Greene again was great as a spot up shooter. Not so much off the dribble. Jakarr can be Big East POY next year the way he has progressed with his inside outside game. Jamaal gave us a big lift early. Sanchez was probably the only player i was disappointed in. He was forcing it too much. All in all, a very gutty win in a tough place. We need to bring some big time intensity to the BET and take care of the ball!!!

Watched the game today with some fellow SJU fans at a sports bar. I think the game took a few years off my life but I will take it. I just read the game thread, our positive thinking seems to be improving. I counted only 3 posts that stated the game was over and we were going to lose once it went to overtime & only one of our players was called a sexual act this time (SANCHEZ IS A BLOWJOB ALSO!!!). Back in January there would have been about 20 of these LOL. To those fans who believed and remained positive, please bring that energy next week. Something tells me today was not our last overtime game. :silly:

I was at a St. Patrick's parade and was following this on the Web(when I could) and was shocked about 9 times today. Especially when I saw the final score. Jesus Christ!

Don't know if you guys caught Rysheed leaping into Obekpa's arms after the final buzzer sounded. Obekpa held him up for a long time. After the horror of losing his aunt to gun violence in the last 2 weeks, it was really nice to see him being able to celebrate something. For this kid as much as any of our guys I hope this team makes the dance and makes some noise along the way. He deserves a break in his life right now.
I thought the same exact thing! What a gutty performance. I was damn near suicidal at my watering hole in Shelton, ct but I think the double ot win can only build character and speaks to the balls of this team. What a thriller. Craziest swings of emotion I've experienced in a long time

Pretty solid stat line for Sheed 20 points, 6 asst., 5 steals and 4 boards.

Matt I see those stats as being fantastic as opposed to being pretty solid. What a great performance by our sensational freshman. These last few games have shown us what Rysheed is capable of and there is little doubt the sky is the limit for him.
No kid should have to go through what Rysheed has gone through on a personal level this season and I tip my hat to him and the staff for keeping him around and in the program while putting up a very good freshman season through the tidal wave of emotions and personal responsibility he has had to go through.
Bravo Rysheed and Coach Lavin.

Any replay of game today, I missed it.

I have the entire game on DVR. You don't want to see it. I watched the end 3 times, and that little baseline that missed at the buzzer was one of those plays where you could see it happening, and it was a wide open shot. Each time I watched it, even knowing it was a replay, I was still hoping it wouldn't go in. Losing a six point lead with 11.6 seconds to play was literally unbelievable - like a guy about to die thinking, "so this is how it all ends!". We did indeed win the game, (unless the Vicodin I'm on is deceiving me). If I knew how to transfer it, I'd do it for you.

St. Patrick's Day parade on March 8th?

So it's true that for guys with guinness in their username it's St. Patrick's Day no matter what the calendar says.

Re: Pointer: I understand, I just thought that situationally, that would have helped. Luckily, he fouled out before the final shot.

While GG and CO are very important to us for their respective roles, their free shooting is a albatross during close games and could have resulted in defeat yesterday or, in the next game.
A line up of Sanchez,Sampson and 3 guards, DLO, Jordan, Greene or, Branch might have been a better combo in the OT'S than GG.

Marquette relied almost exclusively on Mayo down the stretch as Sampson and Sanchez seemed to be able to minimize Gardner .Fouling GG became Marquette's defensive strategy..

No one is saying he isn't a good role player, nice kid, student, etc but, he shoots 53% from the line.. I think playing him in such a situation goes against the Coaching Principles 101.

Yes, we won the game but, it was so close to a terrible loss as well.. We've lost a few in the last minutes before and it was good to see us get a break and eke it out one time.

It should not have been a double OT game to begin with, with 11 seconds to go..And, the Wilson kid got way too good a look on Marquette's last shot in the final seconds of the 2nd OT.

We can beat Providence on Thursday but, it depends on what team shows up at the Garden, where we've been mediocre so far. Losses to Nova and Xavier there were not good efforts.

Let's go JOHNNIES!

Sampson had already fouled out or I'm certain he would have been in.

Our first of probably three this month. Lots of Irish on Long Island...they like to make every Weekend St. Patrick's Day in March.

GOOD point. When did Jakarr foul out? Regulation or OT? I Forget.. At that point, no pun intended, maybe Lavin could have used, and I can't believe I'm saying this, Pointer, who shoots fouls a bit better than GG. OR, go to 4 guards and Sanchez, since BUZZ was substituting Gardner on every offense/defense sequence..
Could have had Branch in there with DLO, Jordan, Greene and Sanchez.
Mayo was their go to guy at that time.

But, it's all irrelevant since the game should have never been in OT.

Karr fouled out in OT. We needed size in there to combat their big guy down low. As Marillac would pointer out Dom isn't hitting the boards hard enough. Gift killed us at the line but he was productive down low I thought. We didn't have a to of options

From the Milwaukee Journal

Statistically, Marquette was lucky to be in the game at all. The Red Storm (20-11, 10-8) had 12 steals, shot 51% and had three players — Jakarr Sampson, D'Angelo Harris and Rysheed Jordan — score 20 points and likely played itself into the NCAA Tournament after beginning the Big East season 0-5.

Yeah, that's always a fun one. Lots of places to go post-parade. Yesterday was Bay Shore for us.
