While GG and CO are very important to us for their respective roles, their free shooting is a albatross during close games and could have resulted in defeat yesterday or, in the next game.
A line up of Sanchez,Sampson and 3 guards, DLO, Jordan, Greene or, Branch might have been a better combo in the OT'S than GG.
Marquette relied almost exclusively on Mayo down the stretch as Sampson and Sanchez seemed to be able to minimize Gardner .Fouling GG became Marquette's defensive strategy..
No one is saying he isn't a good role player, nice kid, student, etc but, he shoots 53% from the line.. I think playing him in such a situation goes against the Coaching Principles 101.
Yes, we won the game but, it was so close to a terrible loss as well.. We've lost a few in the last minutes before and it was good to see us get a break and eke it out one time.
It should not have been a double OT game to begin with, with 11 seconds to go..And, the Wilson kid got way too good a look on Marquette's last shot in the final seconds of the 2nd OT.
We can beat Providence on Thursday but, it depends on what team shows up at the Garden, where we've been mediocre so far. Losses to Nova and Xavier there were not good efforts.
Let's go JOHNNIES!
Sampson had already fouled out or I'm certain he would have been in.
GOOD point. When did Jakarr foul out? Regulation or OT? I Forget.. At that point, no pun intended, maybe Lavin could have used, and I can't believe I'm saying this, Pointer, who shoots fouls a bit better than GG. OR, go to 4 guards and Sanchez, since BUZZ was substituting Gardner on every offense/defense sequence..
Could have had Branch in there with DLO, Jordan, Greene and Sanchez.
Mayo was their go to guy at that time.
But, it's all irrelevant since the game should have never been in OT.
Jakarr can't shoot free throws either. Dom got better this season.
