Marquette Game Thread

While GG and CO are very important to us for their respective roles, their free shooting is a albatross during close games and could have resulted in defeat yesterday or, in the next game.
A line up of Sanchez,Sampson and 3 guards, DLO, Jordan, Greene or, Branch might have been a better combo in the OT'S than GG.

Marquette relied almost exclusively on Mayo down the stretch as Sampson and Sanchez seemed to be able to minimize Gardner .Fouling GG became Marquette's defensive strategy..

No one is saying he isn't a good role player, nice kid, student, etc but, he shoots 53% from the line.. I think playing him in such a situation goes against the Coaching Principles 101.

Yes, we won the game but, it was so close to a terrible loss as well.. We've lost a few in the last minutes before and it was good to see us get a break and eke it out one time.

It should not have been a double OT game to begin with, with 11 seconds to go..And, the Wilson kid got way too good a look on Marquette's last shot in the final seconds of the 2nd OT.

We can beat Providence on Thursday but, it depends on what team shows up at the Garden, where we've been mediocre so far. Losses to Nova and Xavier there were not good efforts.

Let's go JOHNNIES!

Sampson had already fouled out or I'm certain he would have been in.

GOOD point. When did Jakarr foul out? Regulation or OT? I Forget.. At that point, no pun intended, maybe Lavin could have used, and I can't believe I'm saying this, Pointer, who shoots fouls a bit better than GG. OR, go to 4 guards and Sanchez, since BUZZ was substituting Gardner on every offense/defense sequence..
Could have had Branch in there with DLO, Jordan, Greene and Sanchez.
Mayo was their go to guy at that time.

But, it's all irrelevant since the game should have never been in OT.

Jakarr can't shoot free throws either. Dom got better this season.

In limited minutes Gift had 4 points, 6 rebounds and a couple of blocks. This included a couple of offensive boards that kept possessions alive and a huge defensive rebound at the end of the game that allowed us to get fouled for the winning free throw. Those rebounds are game changing plays that are just as important to winning as a made basket. There's no guarantee we get that defensive rebound without him on the court.

Let's admit...there was panic at the end of regulation. Jordan's play...Sanchez missed first shot of a one and one...even the ref blew the Obekpa call and fouled him out. That was the biggest choke of all. Fans have a right to say that.

Still, I defy anyone to argue this team didn't show major sized onions in the two OT's against a good, well coached team that was fighting for its life at home on senior day.

They did, no doubt. Having said that, I believe this team has the talent and depth to challenge for a national championship. What we lack is "onions" for 40 minutes every game and understanding time, score and the importance of playing smart and situational as well as fast. I think many on the board confuse winning and good play, a team reaching their potential. Many also think think criticism during or after a win is somehow taboo because of the score or the final result. I respectfully disagree; dumb is dumb. Having said that, I will close with again agreeing with your point; it would have been very easy to call it a day after blowing the lead. Obviously they did not and serious kudos for that. Hopefully they can build on this, "get it" and do some real damage next week. Just as hopefully, Lavin learns that winning a close, hard fought game and still having a time out is smart, not wasteful.

It would not hurt for Lavin to hold on to a timeout, especially since Jordan could have used it with 11 seconds to go. Let's face it this was not the first time we had trouble taking the ball out of bounds.

Is it me or are the refs calling more goal tending against Obekpa? The one called yesterday was bs.

Yes, seemingly over the last 10 games or so.

That's great but,its speculation to think another player, any other player wouldn't have gotten those rebounds or blocks, etc. You have to admit missed free throws from GG MIGHT HAVE COST US THE GAME. but, you could say the same about the generally lousy foul shooting, including Jordan's miss on the back end of the one and one.

Hey, GG plays tough, hustles, rebounds but, is a liability on offense.. Marqeutte knew it too and fouled him as much as possible in crucial situations.

Yes, seemingly over the last 10 games or so.

And yet, he's seemed to have mostly shelved his smile (after something goes against him) that some posters really love to hate.
He should bring his smile back.

Secret complaints to front office, which then tells refs to watch carefully, then refs naturally go overboard?

A liability on offense; OK, we all get it. But he was a big plus factor on defense (as described above). As for another player contributing as much on defense, as you yourself put it, that's nothing more than speculation. Yes, "GG MIGHT have cost us the game" but -- speculation aside -- the fact is he DIDN'T cost us the game; he was, in fact, instrumental in our winning it.

Well said. The fact is we won the game. I'd rather just accept the formula that won us the game, as precarious as it might have been, rather than speculate that some changes might have resulted in a better outcome. Those changes could just have easily resulted in a loss. Don't Monday morning quarterback after a win.

Don't know if you guys caught Rysheed leaping into Obekpa's arms after the final buzzer sounded. Obekpa held him up for a long time. After the horror of losing his aunt to gun violence in the last 2 weeks, it was really nice to see him being able to celebrate something. For this kid as much as any of our guys I hope this team makes the dance and makes some noise along the way. He deserves a break in his life right now.
I thought the same exact thing! What a gutty performance. I was damn near suicidal at my watering hole in Shelton, ct but I think the double ot win can only build character and speaks to the balls of this team. What a thriller. Craziest swings of emotion I've experienced in a long time

If a college basketball game makes you potentially suicidal (sarcastic or not), you really need to re-examine your life. This is a game and should have absolutely no affect on the quality of your life. I know the number to a great therapist if you are interested.....

Jumbo, someone you've been seeing for a long, long time?

Exaggerating to emphasize a point means someone needs to re-examine his life?
