Marquette Game Thread

Please, please don't ever wear those unis again!!

I don't usually mind a little change, but I turned on the game was trying to figure out why DePaul was playing...

I was frustrated and turned the TV off after regulation. I came to this site to see what was going on. It sounded like we were down big by the tone of the thread. Turned the TV back on and was surprised to see us up by 1..

That was Harrison's three

Funny story...My Mom (82 year old Johnnies fan) called me to ask me who made that 3...I said Harrison...She said I love him[/quote]

Haha. That's great.

Have we ever coughed up a 6 point lead with 11 seconds to go before? I don't remember it. Even more improbably, we recovered from it. Nice job.

Reminded me of the Reggie Miller game against the Knicks. Those 8 points in 9 seconds to steal a certain payday from me pretty much ended my gambling career.

Exactly what I was thinking... was not optimistic about OT but in the end they showed a lot of guts and fortitude to dog it out and win. You could see by the players reaction at the end what it meant to them. Harrison's 3 was huge and Sampson put in a great shift before fouling out.

When we were 0-5 I thought we might not win 5 games in the BE. To go 10-3 over the last 13 games took great effort and the players and staff are to be commended for their play over the last 6-7 weeks.

Gutty performance.... Very proud of our guys! When's the last time a non ranked team won at Marquette

We all get upset at times about the play of our team and decisions of the coach. The more important the game, it seems the more shrill are the posts every single time someone makes a mistake. Effectively, many of the posts cross into a kind of long-distance name-caling. This team is two games over five hundred at the season end because they were dysfunctional the first four months of the season. Given what they accomplished since then, they aren't pathethic, stupid, incompetent, embarassments to the schoold, or the worst "fill in the blank in our history."

I criticized the coach like many others for not playing Jordan early in the year enough and for the constant rotating of
bench players for major minutes. He has made plenty of mistakes. I am as frustrated as anyone by the missed foul shots and the unfocused turnovers. But proclaiming over and over again that the game is lost when there is plenty of time left betrays the effort to sound informed as mere petulant whining. Reiterating that some individual should never be on the floor or coach a high school team etc isn't a sports critique the 12 th time its repeated in the same game; and attacking other posters because they haven't crapped in their diapers with you in mid-game but are trying to retain some hope is what makes this site less and less engaging.

I would suggest each of us go back and read your own posts throughout the last game. See if you came across as a
nervous fan, or even temporarily upset at showing a bit of frustration, or did you come across as a sarcastic, self-righteous, condescending know-it-all. It might be more instructive than anything anyone else can say to you and it might make the Big East tournament threads a lot more incisive.

I haven't read this entire thread during or after the game, but I've seen some posts on here where your post (Albany) hits home.

Marquette is tough to beat at home, and only 4 teams have beaten them at home this season.... Ohio State, Villanova, Creighton, and the Johnnies. I didn't see the game, but will take this win all day long.

I think some people needs to see the post below again (per a poster from Hoyasaxa).... Highlighted in bold is what really hits home, IMO.

"The conversation is far livelier and more intelligent over at Casual Hoya. There's (get this!) actual perspective over there - this board is now overpopulated by the worst type of sports fans: Embittered folks with way too much emotional investment in the won-loss results of a group of young men in their late teens/early 20s. It's one thing to care - we all care. It's another to revel in the team's failings, and to use every negative occurrence as an excuse to question the talent and character of our coaching staff and our roster. The great results of the past decade are largely ignored at the first sign of adversity - the loud and cynical grab pitchforks and pink slips and start pounding their keyboards around here.

RDF was the canary in the coal mine: This board's existence as a useful place to talk about [strike]Georgetown[/strike] St. John's basketball has ceased. It is now a haven for the angry and the bored. Good riddance."

Nobody can convince me that this team does not belong in the field of 68. With the talent that we have we can play and beat anyone in the country. It would be for me and for many on this board a major disappointment if we do not get a NCAA bid.

As you know, you shared the above snippet with me in a PM about a month ago, when you decided to take a week or so hiatus from redmen.com, exactly for the reasons cited in the above post. Two weeks ago, the day after the Nova loss, I had a business trip that took me away from NY for 9 days. I followed out games, but didn't sign on once here. It was mostly because of the interaction between posters after the Nova loss. I'm sure that with a big win today, the nastiness will subside for a few days, but if we lose early in the BET and fail to make the NCAA tourney, it will immediately resume. I found a well written article about being a fan of the Washington Nationals, and will post it when I get a chance, since it was a good perspective. In any event, there are a ton of good guys on here, some of whom I've met at games and events, others, like yourself, who I've gotten to know through public and private messages.

The thing is, I'm guessing nearly everyone here are good guys. When the whole internet thing exploded, I remember speaking to another parent about why he wouldn't; let his young teenaged kids use the internet. He said the reason was that teenagers say horrible things to each other in instant and public messages that they'd never say to each other in person. I think its pretty much true on here - guys say things to each other that they'd never say in person. Again, it's sad.

Don't know if you guys caught Rysheed leaping into Obekpa's arms after the final buzzer sounded. Obekpa held him up for a long time. After the horror of losing his aunt to gun violence in the last 2 weeks, it was really nice to see him being able to celebrate something. For this kid as much as any of our guys I hope this team makes the dance and makes some noise along the way. He deserves a break in his life right now.

I felt like I lived through an entire Jets season today during the Marquette game . I thought we lost the game nine times , jordans inbound reminded me of the " BUTT FUMble " . Harrisons three reminded me of a very late field goal . When the last shot missed , it took me a few seconds to realize and appreciate that we had won .

I was about to post something of the same effect. It's shocking that certain grown men on here have no control of their emotions. Reading this thread and some of the disgusting things that were said at low points in the game is embarrassing.

ive personally overreacted at times, but so are you here...there was nothing "disgusting" said so calm down. there was no attack on the players personally, no real personal attack on posters, just maybe the players basketball IQ and abilities.

Nice try. Someone said God's Gift and Obepka should never play again. And that's just one instance.

If u think thats "disgusting" you need to toughen up.

Gods gift is a nice kid, but he shouldnt be playing.

I need to toughen up lol. The real tough guy is the one calling out teenagers from behind a computer screen I guess. :fight:

Mike, he should be playing. Obekpa fouled out. He came off the bench and gave us valuable minutes. The only thing he didn't do was hit free throws. Every team needs backups. If he never plays, what happens when the starter needs a break, fouls out, gets injured? You make this nonsensical, absolutist statements. You sound as ridiculous as Joe3 used to. Ehhh... No, couldn't be.

Never had a doubt :)

In all seriousness though even though choking away that lead is about as embarrassing as it gets, gotta give the team credit for regaining their composure and winning a tough road game in a place that isn't easy to play in. Easy for me to say because I didn't see the game, but I think still finding away to win despite what happened counts for something

I thought that Pointer might have done a better job on D on Mayo, but whateverr
Dom failed to hit the deck on a loose ball at his feet. It happened right in front of coach, and I think he had already been pulled once. I'm a Dom fan, and I don't like calling him on it, but that craps been going on for awhile. I think he'll get back in, but coach is working on him.
