Long Beach St game thread

Thankfully, we have great D. Because our offense is below par. Hard first half to watch.

But we've become a better second half team so there's always hope no matter the first half score. Have we had a poor second half yet this season - perhaps

A dangerous role to play.

The defense just looked really confident. Not cocky just efficient and businesslike. Second game in a row where the opposing team's big looked ready to cry at the end...

Agreed. CO was totally in their heads tonight. There were a number of short shots that brought rain.

The guys have been so focused so far this year. They are much improved and it's starts with all the confidence and desire to win. They haven't been cocky, just hungry! Obekpa has improved and developed and continues to develop every game. I attribute that to a terrific job on the coaching staff. Who says Lav can't coach or develop players? Great to see all around, keep it up fellas, your taking the city by storm! Lol Go Johnnies!!!!

St. Mary's had a few players just getting over a stomach virus so I wouldn't doubt Sheed got it from them during the game the other day. Either way, you could see how valuable he is to this team

Jordan looked a bit winded last game...may have been sick last game

A few fans saying DeA had a bad game
I thought he played under control - someone likely observed that already but just leaving the game & haven't read all prior posts
Obvious at game was Zendon but I got to chat with Tomas Jasiolionis & Toja Abit who played early 2000s for Norm I believe
Abit very bright and says he's having a successful acting career - he added his mother was from the same country as Chrus Obepka

All the best

I think Harrison displays great maturity..never appears to be in "gotta get mine" mode

Just got back from the game and these guys are really impressing me. Great job, guys!!! Especially the D!!! D wins games.

Dee didn't take many shots , but he had 10 rebounds. Dom another well rounded game. Branch good game w efficient offense. Greene took a lot of shots , seemed to improve 2nd half of game . CO; a real defensive presence w an offensive game that is night and day from last year.Excellent D.

Greene needs to just set up on perimeter and wait to receive pass or serve as decoy...not as effective shooting off dribble (outside of floater) and hasdifficulty inisshinng at rim...

I reallly like when he lets it come to him..very dependable

Dead on re: Harrison. He had a bad shooting night, but did not force things, or seem the least bit concerned about getting his points. He has transformed himself into a rebounding guard, and makes sure he is under the defensive boards and battles for every R. His defense was superb as well. Take out the poor shooting night, and I give him an A to A+ tonight.

Just glanced at some posts. Was greatly relieved to hear that Jordan has a stomach virus. I was feeling queasy myself thinking a disciplinary DNP at the end of a semester could mean he'd be out of here in January. How do you spell relief? V-I-R-U-S. Lots of words I could have put in there for a stomach virus.

CO - the man. Two outside shots, including one big one late from the left corner. Quickly becoming an offensive threat. Straight up defense improved radically and STILL is a shot swatter. The Big O.

Kudos to Lavin for resting his starters a lot during the first half, keeping them fresh to log a ton of second half minutes. Looking smarter and smarter. Reminds me of the old Mark Twain description of his dad when he was 17 and again at 21.
and smart nott too use the full court press w/Jordan out

After one force Pointer was very effective at attacking the rim. When he was on the three point line in the first half the offense was stagnant. He gets his hands on so many balls that we didn't miss Jordan as much. Harrison played great D and was a rebounding machine. Great second half. And no excuses about Long Beach State being tired. These are twenty year old kids. St. John's played five guys the entire second half. Didn't look tired to me.

The fan in me wants to believe it's been our defense against SM and LBS. Then there is that part that saw 2 teams coming cross country and playing like they had no legs. It is probably a little bit of both. Whatever it is, we do have the ability, despite having a short bench, of wearing teams down. Kudos to the coaching staff for having our guys in great shape early in the season. There is one consistent factor. It took these guys 4 years to figure out how to play together. It also seems to take the first half to figure out how to deal with what's being thrown at them. It's a good sign since we will need to have a great end game to close most teams out.

Great effort all around by the team and staff responding to harrison's off noght / foul trouble and the absence of Jordan. I think its become abundantly clear that Lavin is more comfortable (and better) coach with a shorter rotation.

Great defense tonight by obekpa, pointer, and certainly branch.

I mirror harrison's comment they mentioned on the broadcast tonight: it may not be the most talented team he's been on at SJU, but its the best team.

No question about that.

Agree on the shorter rotation thing. Okay RJ23 DNP tonight but our bench: 18 minutes. Their bench: 73 mins. Our first 5 guys all contributed one way or another and helped each other out.

Last year it seemed like Lavin felt compelled to spread the 40 mins evenly across all available players. Hoya game was the worst example...

Otoja is a childhood friend of mine, played little league with him. Class act, good ball player in both baseball and basketball out of Molloy.

3 starters played 37 mins which means they sat for two mins each and Pointer played the entire game until the subs came in with 1 left. Only Dlo rested and that was due to the 2 early fouls.

One of the announcers reported that Lavin said that Jordan would be out indefinitely with a stomach flu. That sounds like more than a stomach flu. Usually you would expect these things to get through the system pretty fast, literally and figuratively. Especially in a young, healthy person.

They interviewed lavin after the game and he said Jordan would be back for Tulane game.
