Long Beach St game thread

Still a long way to go. But if the early signs of a relentless defense, are indicative of this tram's identity moving forward, I will be thrilled.

Also, aside from the dogged defense, they have not over committed and left guys wide open from the outside. They are playing -- dare I say it -- intelligently.

If this team continues to play hard defensively, they are capable of winning games against quality opponents, even when Harrison or Jordan's offense is missing. Something we haven't been able to say before.

While our defense has been much better than previous years our offense has been putrid and has benefited from our opponents equally putrid offense to date.
Forget Obekpa scoring a career high against a LBS freshman, the rest of the team looked awful. We basically had to play 5 players the entire game and that my friend spells tired legs by the end of the Big East season.
I am also concerned that we have another mysterious Jordan absence right before the start of the Big East season. If I got the presser right, Jordan played Friday night, ate a crapped filled breakfast on campus and proceeded to pack his bags for Philly instead of heading over to practice in preparation for a big game on Monday. I also speculate that he did not have the shlitz on his way to Philly, if that is where he is but it made for a sympathetic statement by the school. No wonder Monasch looked so happy.
So, in summary, if you think our short thin team will do much damage in the Big East without Jordan and little or no production from Amar, Felix and Jones, you better hope we catch most other Big East teams on an off night.

I don't think anyone is giving the team credit for the intense defense we play at times. It is not a coincidence that so many teams are shooting poorly against us. I also think our thin bench is being exaggerated. Of course we need Jordan to play regularly but there is no evidence that he won't. Otherwise, I think we will get by most of the time. Almost every team has a weakness(see Kansas yesterday).

The thing that concerned me the most about Rysheed was the mention that he was home in Philly resting. Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but why can't he be on campus resting with the rest of the team, especially during the season? I know he's got a family to take care of at home, so maybe that's it. I really can't see him leaving, it's just a bit concerning from the outside looking in.

Official attendance : 5,014

That kind of is in line with my thinking. The lower seat back section wasn't close to being full and I would guess there were 300-400 no shows among season ticket holders, so it was a little better than I thought, but not as good as you thought.

I don't have a problem with him spending Christmas at home with his family.

Concerning short rotation, from what I recall Louie only played 6-7 every game. Never used his bench much I believe & that was frustrating. Mark Jackson & later Jayson Williams thought about transferring out for lack of PT.

Looie's response to critics who said he "overworked" his 6-7 player rotation was something like, "Hey, they're 19 and 20 years old. How can they possibly be tired?"

Tired legs at the end of the season ?? These kids are young no way they get tired. Even if they do the frustration and the motivation that they have from the last few seasons will push them. Most top teams have a 7-8 man max rotation.

Having been there, I wasn't reading a stat sheet. All I can tell you is that at one point, we had Myles Stewart, Balamou, and JDR on the court in the first half at the same time. Balamou got extended run and it seemed like Stewart did also, and it was surprising to see either in the first half while the game counted. It seemed interminable because we had very little offensive power on the floor at once.

The other two subs (Amir and Jones) were garbage time.

Not for anything but does Balamou ever take a shot? Have to believe he came as a package deal with Obekpa.

We're probably better off that he's doesn't. Felix seems like he's a hardworking, team-oriented player, but we're in trouble when he's first guard off the bench. He's simply not BE talent.

A few fans saying DeA had a bad game
I thought he played under control - someone likely observed that already but just leaving the game & haven't read all prior posts
Obvious at game was Zendon but I got to chat with Tomas Jasiolionis & Toja Abit who played early 2000s for Norm I believe
Abit very bright and says he's having a successful acting career - he added his mother was from the same country as Chrus Obepka

All the best

Otoja is a childhood friend of mine, played little league with him. Class act, good ball player in both baseball and basketball out of Molloy.

Called SJU spoke with an "executive" who was most courteous and was told they used to announce returning players and would consider resuming it! This person agreed fully. The kids should be recognized!!!
I felt good that this is a possibility!

He wasn't felling well and went home for Christmas; it could be as simple as that. If classes are in session he stays on campus. With his unfortunate family situation from last year and his Moms health (which has improved from what I read) It may be best for him to be at home for the Holidays. I know we have not gotten many breaks in the "News" department over the past few years but let's not get to far ahead of ourselves here.

Yeah, it was such a bs sickness he had to get IV fluids.

From the Daily News article : "But on Monday night, the sophomore guard was with his family in Philadelphia, dealing with a stomach virus that required IV fluids at a local hospital."

Good speculation.

Questioning is not getting ahead of yourselves. However in matters like this, I believe posters should exercise some self constraint and perhaps question it in private. Why the need to do in a public forum? What good does it do to throw this kid under the bus based on some conjecture? If there is a problem then the bad news will come out eventually. If it there isn't bad news, then no news will come out. Just be patient. The kid plays for the university. I believes he deserves to be shown some respect. He hasn't embarrassed the university in any way since he's been here.

It almost like this thread was started because someone wanted to be first to report some news, the first to break a big story. To me it seems self-serving to start (and continue on with) this thread.

Just sit back and be patient and prudent with your words. If some bad news comes out, then there will be plenty of time to discuss it at that point and you all can have at analyzing the news. Until then, in my opinion, there is no reason to speculate to the negative side. It's not fair to the kid, his teammates or to the program as a whole.

The thread wasn't started to break the scoop before anyone else. It was started, first, to annoy reasonable and respectful posters; and, second, to tarnish the reputation of a disliked players and the program.

If it was reported that "there is word that...", then maybe one could say that there is a factual basis for posting. To just simply insinuate something without providing even a shred of substance, in my opinion, agenda driven.

At the end of each game the other teams have been the ones with the tired legs. Have the worriers been watching the second half of these games?

welcome to Redmen.com. when things are going good for the program they have to start making crap up just so they can bitch about it

So does the rest of the team get the same benefit? Don't they have to stay on campus and practice/train each day and night?

It's worse than agenda driven. It's ugly and speaks volumes more about those who post it and support it than it does about any player. Ugly and sad.

If they were ill and maybe needed to be in their hometown at this time maybe they would. All I am trying to say is that we need not jump to the negative. There could be reasons he needs to be in Philly. If another player had similar issues maybe Lavin would let them go as well. All we know is what was written. We have not heard any "smoke" to think there is something wrong. Could the fire appear tomorrow; possibly, then we will all have time to be sick for the Holidays!!

Where do they live or where is their family now let me see Texas, Detroit, Chicago, Los Angeles Italy and Africa. Oh forgot Flordia

Good speculation.

That's why it's called speculation. Maybe Lavin wanted to isolate him from the team, maybe he could not get IV fluids a few blocks away at Queens General, maybe he has a verbal agreement to spend the holidays home, but there is a stomach virus that has hit college campuses this year, as it did with a few St. Mary's players but most don't get the privilege of going home to recover. Then again, New York's team only has one New Yorker, a walk on, so hopefully he gets the same benefit of being with his family as Rysheed.
