Long Beach St game thread

One of the announcers reported that Lavin said that Jordan would be out indefinitely with a stomach flu. That sounds like more than a stomach flu. Usually you would expect these things to get through the system pretty fast, literally and figuratively. Especially in a young, healthy person.

Like I said, the best is yet to come.
They look like they are improving every game. Maybe they can't play like that with much a short rotation for 40minutes, If I was Lavin I would have tried considering they have 5 days to rest before the Tulane game.
Speaking of Tulane, they're down 28-26 at the half.

They interviewed lavin after the game and he said Jordan would be back for Tulane game.

You saw the interview from the visiting locker room? Good game tonight Mr. Williams.

Concerning short rotation, from what I recall Louie only played 6-7 every game. Never used his bench much I believe & that was frustrating. Mark Jackson & later Jayson Williams thought about transferring out for lack of PT.

Harrison didn't have 20 points but I thought he played a great game. He was 3-8 and some posters are saying he had an off shooting night but the % is close to his career % and one more made shot and he's at 50%. To me it shows 1) that he is only concerned with winning - he's not necessarily looking for points and 2) he has faith in his teammates - if he is not getting a good look he is fine with getting the ball to the open man for an open shot. I don't know if LBS was completely focusing on him, but he was still creating on offense but didn't have many open looks and as a team we didn't force many shots today.
We only had 7 TOs also, which is awesome. We'll win a lot of games if we have 7 TOs.

A few fans saying DeA had a bad game
I thought he played under control - someone likely observed that already but just leaving the game & haven't read all prior posts
Obvious at game was Zendon but I got to chat with Tomas Jasiolionis & Toja Abit who played early 2000s for Norm I believe
Abit very bright and says he's having a successful acting career - he added his mother was from the same country as Chrus Obepka

All the best

Dead on re: Harrison. He had a bad shooting night, but did not force things, or seem the least bit concerned about getting his points. He has transformed himself into a rebounding guard, and makes sure he is under the defensive boards and battles for every R. His defense was superb as well. Take out the poor shooting night, and I give him an A to A+ tonight.

Just glanced at some posts. Was greatly relieved to hear that Jordan has a stomach virus. I was feeling queasy myself thinking a disciplinary DNP at the end of a semester could mean he'd be out of here in January. How do you spell relief? V-I-R-U-S. Lots of words I could have put in there for a stomach virus.

CO - the man. Two outside shots, including one big one late from the left corner. Quickly becoming an offensive threat. Straight up defense improved radically and STILL is a shot swatter. The Big O.

Kudos to Lavin for resting his starters a lot during the first half, keeping them fresh to log a ton of second half minutes. Looking smarter and smarter. Reminds me of the old Mark Twain description of his dad when he was 17 and again at 21.

3 starters played 37 mins which means they sat for two mins each and Pointer played the entire game until the subs came in with 1 left. Only Dlo rested and that was due to the 2 early fouls.

Having been there, I wasn't reading a stat sheet. All I can tell you is that at one point, we had Myles Stewart, Balamou, and JDR on the court in the first half at the same time. Balamou got extended run and it seemed like Stewart did also, and it was surprising to see either in the first half while the game counted. It seemed interminable because we had very little offensive power on the floor at once.

The other two subs (Amir and Jones) were garbage time.

My crowd estimate is 5,500.

No way. The student sections were thin. SJU did a nice job putting cub scouts in the Utopia side empty student section rather than sticking them way upstairs. The upper deck was only a little more than 1/2 filled. My guess in actual (not paid) attendance, is about 4300. Still a nice crowd for a Monday game.

Terrence Mullin coached his St. Francis deSales boy's team at halftime.

I don't know about a little more than 1/2 filled. I sit up there. It was the first game I had to sit in my assigned seat. The official number is north of 5k and 600 short of a sell out. It is a 20% increase over last years SF game which was played at CA a week before Christmas.

Yes, Coach Carnesecca had a short bench rotation in most of his years behind the bench.

Both Mark and Jayson became starters by the midway point of their first years. (Jayson replaced Marco Baldi at Center while Jackson was inserted next to Mike Moses which Chris Mullin moving up front replacing Willie Glass). Jayson never came off the bench while Mark split time with Moses the following year before taking over the point guard duties his final two years. I don't believe either one was close to transferring.

After one force Pointer was very effective at attacking the rim. When he was on the three point line in the first half the offense was stagnant. He gets his hands on so many balls that we didn't miss Jordan as much. Harrison played great D and was a rebounding machine. Great second half. And no excuses about Long Beach State being tired. These are twenty year old kids. St. John's played five guys the entire second half. Didn't look tired to me.

At what point in the season are opposing teams going to start to sag off of Pointer and make him shoot a jump shot?

Props to the one student behind the basket near the SJU bench who was making comments that made Jim Burr react on a couple of occasions.

Still a long way to go. But if the early signs of a relentless defense, are indicative of this tram's identity moving forward, I will be thrilled.

Also, aside from the dogged defense, they have not over committed and left guys wide open from the outside. They are playing -- dare I say it -- intelligently.

If this team continues to play hard defensively, they are capable of winning games against quality opponents, even when Harrison or Jordan's offense is missing. Something we haven't been able to say before.

While our defense has been much better than previous years our offense has been putrid and has benefited from our opponents equally putrid offense to date.
Forget Obekpa scoring a career high against a LBS freshman, the rest of the team looked awful. We basically had to play 5 players the entire game and that my friend spells tired legs by the end of the Big East season.
I am also concerned that we have another mysterious Jordan absence right before the start of the Big East season. If I got the presser right, Jordan played Friday night, ate a crapped filled breakfast on campus and proceeded to pack his bags for Philly instead of heading over to practice in preparation for a big game on Monday. I also speculate that he did not have the shlitz on his way to Philly, if that is where he is but it made for a sympathetic statement by the school. No wonder Monasch looked so happy.
So, in summary, if you think our short thin team will do much damage in the Big East without Jordan and little or no production from Amar, Felix and Jones, you better hope we catch most other Big East teams on an off night.

We played good defense for sure.

But LBS missed an insane amount of wide open shots, especially from 3.

Our 2nd half defense was much better than the 1st.

I didn't agree with Lavin going with Obekpa and JDR at the same time in the 1st against such a small team.

Great to be 10-1. Haven't remembered what it felt like to have so many wins before Conference play started. I think I'm in some surreal moment. Being relevant is incredible.

With our history, we have to relish these moments.

Not for anything but does Balamou ever take a shot? Have to believe he came as a package deal with Obekpa.
