Lavin's Future in Doubt at SJU

Come on now. Chris Mullin. Greatest player in SJU history. Wooden award winner. All american. Basketball Hall of Fame. Gold medal winner. NBA GM. But he's not qualified to fill Norm Roberts Florsheim shoes and Steve Lavin's sweat suit? Come on now. -FUN

I would hire you over Norm. At least your interviews would be must see.
Do I think Chris Mullin knows more about basketball than Lavin? Of course. But so do a ton of people that are not or have ever been a coach. Could Mullin step into the pros and be succesful. I think so. Recruiting is the issue and even with the last couple years failures, a fully engaged Lavin is our best hope to get kids to come here. I am not a Lavin fan, but I honestly believe that last sentence.

Mullin has succeeded at everything he's tried in basketball. I assume if he took it he'd take it to succeed. He can hire a someone to recruit. (Dave mentioned a package deal with Barry Rohrssen.)

Lavin is clearly not fully engaged and anyway the bloom is off his rose. It's hard to believe all of a sudden he's going to turn things around.

Why would Slice leave Kentucky?

Fun
So that would be your first choice Mullin?
Speaking of engaged, my understanding is he is very happy out West.

If hired it would take away a good deal of my posting style as I won't criticize him no matter what he does. So that is a negative or positive depending on people's feelings about me.

I don't have a choice but I don't think Mullin's a crazy one. I'd rather root for him than Bobby Hurley.

I halfway think Lavin should have to endure the shit sandwich that next year's going to be. It'd be fun to watch him implode.

If Mullin is bringing Slice with him, I am down. Sign me up for that.

The thing I worry about most concerning Mullin is the fact that he was the best player ever to wear the Redmen Uniform. He is a treasure to our athletic history and when someone thinks of SJU sports the picture of Mullin appears. I would hate to see him hired to coach our team, and see him stumble. It could be catastrophic if for some reason he couldn't get the job done. At some point another change would be needed. What would happen to the relationship he has with the school if he was released? We would not only lose a coach, how does his image survive that? I think that is something that must really be thought about very carefully.

I swear, you guys wanting Lavin to be extended are a bunch of sentimental wimps with the basketball IQs of mountain goats,

He landed that big recruiting class before his 1st season for one reason ONLY. It was an initial "big splash" moment and he lured these guys in with the vision of rebuilding an elite program and everyone thought it was the beginning of the 'sleeping giant" awakening. D'Lo, Dom, Harkless, Sampson and the rest didnt come here based on a vision of mediocrity or even just good. They thought they were going to be part of an elite program a few years in.

No one buys that Lavin is headed toward greatness here anymore! He WILL NOT RECRUIT ELITE LEVEL GUYS EVER AGAIN! And he is not a coach who can win without talent superior to his opponents. We have seen his ceiling, this year is the best you can expect to see with this guy and even this will be only once every 4-5 years.

No way we will be able to tolerate seeing Archie or Bobby go on to greatness at some other program (God forbid another Big East program) while we become the new Depaul of this league all because of some lazy decision to extend a failure.

Time to do the smart thing and get rid of him while the top prospects are available.

"Change is Coming"
Chnage is only worth it if it will result in significant and immediate improvement. Masiello and Cluess are not upgrades...

If the booster pusihing for replacements such as these we are in trouble.

I'm
was he referencing this past weekend and Monday or this upcoming weekend and Monday? I need mark Jackson to start greasing Diallo's handlers ASAP!

Should be interesting. Means nothing till it happens (or doesn't).

I wonder what St. John's legend (or legends) are they referring to and are they sure they would take the job.

I also wonder what young coach the financial backer is looking for and are they sure he would accept.

What ever happens, I hope it does not turn into a circus. Know or have a reasonable expectation that the person or people you want will accept. If you stay the course or not, whomever the coach is, lay down the ground rules and progress you expect.

Finally, meetings should be happening sooner than later. Discussions one way or the other should have begun already this week.

Legend = mark Jackson
Young coach + financial backer = mass and repole?

Not great choices

Mas and the Hurleys are great choices I think.
Mark? Not so much

Mas is about in the same class as Antigua,,.No thanks

FWIW I think there is a better chance of giving Lavin a 20 year extension than the university bringing in a Mas. Fabricating a degree is a black eye the university won't tolerate.

I can only imagine the damage to our credibility as an institution if we had brought on Mas and then found out about his lack of a degree. We dodged a bullet with that!

Plus he comes across as "mid major" including his 2 szies too small suits

I was sitting here reading all the posts, and it hit me.
The former St. John's legend is a big man who had a nice short jumper--Billy Paultz.
No need for assistant coaches as he can take advantage of the experts on Redmen.com. We can research/scout the opponents and save Whopper lots of time and SJU money. Besides, who knows the recruiting scene better. :cheer:

This, plus the points made by Fun, are why I would not have a problem with the Mullin despite the lack of coaching experience. He has succeeded at everything he's tried in basketball, he has everyone's respect, he will check his ego at the door, and in every important way he IS St Johns basketball.

I would be willing to check my skepticism and bet on Mullin if he wanted to do the job. I trust him to do everything right, including building a staff.

Having said that, if I were making the decision I would go for an established Coach.

And he is not a coach who can win without talent superior to his opponents.

I could give you a bunch of coaches who I believe would fit into that equation.

Yea. Phil Jackson, Pat Riley, Bob Knight, Mike K, John Calipari, John Wooden, Red Holzman, Red Auerbach, Lenny Wilkens, Billy Donovan, Lou C, Jim Boeheim, Rick Pitino and about 10,000 others.

Mullin has been a very competent executive who helped rebuild the Warriors. HE still has a cocky streak in him, and knows this school inside and out. Very few people in administration would say no to anything he asked for. Imagine the kind of player Harrison could have become with Mullin schooling him. Everyone thought Larry Bird would be a joke in any basketball position besides player. I'd give him the keys in an instant if he wanted them. I guarantee there is still plenty of fire in his belly that would restore this program.

Mullin did not build the current team. He was fired before they drafted Curry, Thompson and their nucleus.

His tenure as GM has been heavily criticized by GS fans, not least of which was the 6yr, $42m contract he gave Adonal (4ppg 5rpg) Foyle.
