Lavin's Future in Doubt at SJU

Fun
So that would be your first choice Mullin?
Speaking of engaged, my understanding is he is very happy out West.

If hired it would take away a good deal of my posting style as I won't criticize him no matter what he does. So that is a negative or positive depending on people's feelings about me.

I don't have a choice but I don't think Mullin's a crazy one. I'd rather root for him than Bobby Hurley.

I halfway think Lavin should have to endure the shit sandwich that next year's going to be. It'd be fun to watch him implode.

If Mullin is bringing Slice with him, I am down. Sign me up for that.
Someone here will object to too many Xaverian guys.

Not to go off topic, but Xaverian going coed in 2016 FWIW.

I was always under the impression that many successful college coaches hired a couple of assistants to assist them in their weak point whether it was recruiting or X's and O's.
Nowaday's there are not enough seats on the bench for all the assistants. What do they do?

What? Next you are going to tell me that Molloy is also thinking of going Coed! Oh wait, they did already, never mind.

Sign off the times to keep enrollment up and the doors open I guess.

Why do you consider Toole too risky?

Just curious. I think I give him the next call if Smart and Miller won't come.

Not really sure why so many people are so enamored with Shaka Smart. I have watched a bunch of VCU games. The offensive sets he runs make Lavin look like an offensive genius. He may be a great defensive coach, but I would be fed up with him very quickly if he did not bring someone new in to teach offense because no one on his staff is doing it now. Really ugly offensive sets, if you could even call them offensive sets. I know he had some runs in the NCAAs and was even ranked this year, but I think most fans would be calling for his head pretty quickly if he came here and brought an extremely ugly brand of basketball on the offensive end. Just my .02.

I do like Toole. I just think that this is an enormously high-stakes hire. We have to suffer a rebuild (thank you Steve), but we cannot afford a failed rebuild.

In the end, if SJU hired Toole, it's not one of my top three choices, but I would get behind it.

Lavin will leave the next coach with nothing if 1. Jordan leaves and 2. Brandon decommits. The new guy might get 1 or 2 guys in April, but not impact players.

The 3 that I want are Miller then one of the Hurley Bros. My 4th choice then would be someone who deeply cares about SJU, Chris Mullin.
If he says no, then I don't know who.

You'd have to think one of those four would take the job, no?

No. The school is already being criticized for dragging their feet here. The prior two searches were embarrassing. My guess would be someone along the lines of Willard. Maybe Toole will be the home run we were told we had ten years ago

I agree that you either invest 3-5 more years in Lavin now or let him go now
The fact that he's contacting networks tells you he is not confident of an extension
I hope a decision is made either way within the next few days
It is not good for the program for this situation to drag out

Well the article said the meeting will take place over the weekend or on Monday, so I'm guessing the latest would be Monday evening. It would be real disappointing if Monday came and went without any news on it.

I totally understand the reasons that Lav may not be renewed. Many of the criticisms regarding him have merit. Conversely, his resume is so friggin' odd, it features just as valid reasons for why he should be retained.

I don't know. And it ain't my money or my alumni, so whatever.

But this next coach...if it don't click now, it never will. That Post article, "this is something that should have been done in Jan/Feb, not march, you have five years to look at and decide if you want five more" (paraphrasing). So true...

reminding me that this program's issues are far beyond just who the head coach is.

i personally have no issues with Lav coming back. The last five years have been entertaining, and we're in the game way more with 20 win seasons, tourney hopes, etc. But I never hated on those who would rather go elsewhere for a coach.

But please, pretty please, with a cherry on top, can we make sure we don't get a Hurley reaching for the bottle (sorry, I just don't trust a Hurley for some reason, they seem to have some loose cannon in em), a Manhattan nutjob version 3.0, or Orlando Antigua, who some on this board anointed as Golden Child last year.

If they decide to go new coach and it becomes another five year "eh"...

it ain't the coach boys.

It's the whole damn production.

And I'll have wished they stuck with our classy coach who dresses and looks like Mathew Perry at the end of a Vegas evening with strippers and cocaine.

Concur that there is no upside to letting this drag on too much longer. Assuming there is no agreement on extending Lavin or moving in another direction, one would hope there is somebody in this process capable of rendering a decision. I would think the ultimate arbiter would be President G. Stating the obvious, with our depleted roster & need to recruit, time is of the essence.

This week they could be doing what LJSA mentioned to me, which is sending out feelers to the candidates that they are interested in. After that process, they will have their meeting on the weekend, or Monday. This way they'll know who is interested.
Could be a possibility.

Usually when folks have doubts about keeping a coach they do get "feelers" out there in very creative ways. If SJU had such doubts, my sense is that has already been done.
