Lavin's Future in Doubt at SJU

I swear, you guys wanting Lavin to be extended are a bunch of sentimental wimps with the basketball IQs of mountain goats,

He landed that big recruiting class before his 1st season for one reason ONLY. It was an initial "big splash" moment and he lured these guys in with the vision of rebuilding an elite program and everyone thought it was the beginning of the 'sleeping giant" awakening. D'Lo, Dom, Harkless, Sampson and the rest didnt come here based on a vision of mediocrity or even just good. They thought they were going to be part of an elite program a few years in.

No one buys that Lavin is headed toward greatness here anymore! He WILL NOT RECRUIT ELITE LEVEL GUYS EVER AGAIN! And he is not a coach who can win without talent superior to his opponents. We have seen his ceiling, this year is the best you can expect to see with this guy and even this will be only once every 4-5 years.

No way we will be able to tolerate seeing Archie or Bobby go on to greatness at some other program (God forbid another Big East program) while we become the new Depaul of this league all because of some lazy decision to extend a failure.

Time to do the smart thing and get rid of him while the top prospects are available.

1st time ever on redmen.com that a poster has referred to other posters as mountain goats

Do you really think Archie Miller, and more importantly his wife will fit into the NYC landscape coming from Dayton, Ohio? I have my doubts! Who wants to live and raise a family in NY anymore? As was mentioned on this board before, I think most coaches wives prefer a college town environment! But who knows, MONEY TALKS!

Concur that there is no upside to letting this drag on too much longer. Assuming there is no agreement on extending Lavin or moving in another direction, one would hope there is somebody in this process capable of rendering a decision. I would think the ultimate arbiter would be President G. Stating the obvious, with our depleted roster & need to recruit, time is of the essence.

This week they could be doing what LJSA mentioned to me, which is sending out feelers to the candidates that they are interested in. After that process, they will have their meeting on the weekend, or Monday. This way they'll know who is interested.
Could be a possibility.

Usually when folks have doubts about keeping a coach they do get "feelers" out there in very creative ways. If SJU had such doubts, my sense is that has already been done.

Yes of course someone with vision, initiative, intelligence, authority, competence, experience, and business acumen would have planned for current events some time ago and had options explored at least preliminary and an plan of action in mind.

Oh, were we discussing St. John's?

You gotta embrace NYC, if you win at SJU (something that hasn't happened in a lone while), NYC will embrace you. We want someone that will admit to their mistakes and says that it's his duty as the head coach to correct those mistakes.
Not someone like Lavin that will make excuse after excuse.

A coach that will talk straight up to the fans, not bs quotes where it looks like he's BSing us.
Like the "Rebounding is overrated" line among other mind boggling quotes.

Okay, I am getting a little nervous that we are not capable of doing a good job with this. I am afraid we are going to take too long, the music will stop, and we will be left without a seat (or a coach).

HURRY UP!!!

If they don't announce something by Thursday, it means we don't have the structure in place to be decisive. If that's true, bring Lavin back instead of winding up with a botched job search.

*Of course, Lavin may not even want to come back to Lavin's roster.

Johnny, screws the head guys there. Let some on here do it, Paultz and some of the other guys. They'd do a much better job then the idiots at sju's and I'm being dead serious.

Yeah SJU headmen you got until November to make your choice. Take your sweet time

Well done & true Lawman! :)

Mullin has been a very competent executive who helped rebuild the Warriors.

Mullin did not build the current team. He was fired before they drafted Curry, Thompson and their nucleus.

His tenure as GM has been heavily criticized by GS fans, not least of which was the 6yr, $42m contract he gave Adonal (4ppg 5rpg) Foyle.

Mullin was gone 6 years ago.. In his tenure, GS improved, from 34 wins his first season, to 48 wins his next to last season. In the season he was fired by team President Robert Rowell there was building bad feelings between the two when Rowell fired assistant GM Pete D'Allessandro a few months into that season..

http://www.ibabuzz.com/warriors/2008/11/06/mullins-right-hand-man-fired/

The 48 win season was the Warriors best since 1994, when a Mullin led team had 50 wins.

Apparently there was some inertia in Mullin taking the coaching reigns of the Kings this season:

http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/1...sacramento-kings-coaching-vacancy-per-sources

Here's an article critical of Mullin's signing of Foyle, but that article dates back to 2006, before the Warriors improved:

http://justthesports.blogspot.com/2006/08/mullin-should-have-fired-himself-too.html

The 2008 team was led by Baron Davis (criticized in the above article), Stephen Jackson (acquired by Mullin), Monta Ellis (a second round gem picked by Mullin), and Al Harrington.(acquired by Mullin)

Foyle was a mistake but he was unloaded after just one season after being signed to a 6 year deal.

It's morning. Time for the next Jimmy Olsen to authoritatively post that negotiations with Lavin on an extension are nearing completion and we can have another 20 pages of posters arguing with each other.

Zach reporting that Lavin has approached networks for job opportunities

Lavin is using his fall back plan. The guy is two steps ahead of his employer. He's probably already had it with this place. Hello homerun.

Whatever the decision it should be made soon, as in a day or two. Other schools (ie Depaul and MissSt) have made their decisions and have a better selection if coaches to course from. I'm not sure what discussions are taking place now that couldn't of been discussed starting a month ago.
Did his future solely depend on SDSU

I know it's been said but needs to be repeated. SJU is handling this TERRIBLY no matter the outcome. They should've settled on a candidate months ago, or at the very least narrowed it down to 2-3 and made the decision immediately after Friday's game.

The bad thing is that Lavin has won at SJU. Three 20-win seasons in 4 years. He's had a winning season every year since he's been here, except for his 2nd year when he only coached 4 games. Maybe you should have said that if you win the NCAA championship at SJU then NYC will embrace you.
