Jordan Status?

Maybe he did put up 500 shots a day and he is still bad. Lack of confidence can be a very difficult thing to overcome.

That could be Simplyred, no one really knows for sure. That's true. It's wrong to assume, but, I someone of his athletic ability, if they were putting up 500 shots a day they would improve somewhat. But, you correct. Unless you're actually there no one knows for sure.

And if you are shooting 500 jumpers a day with bad form all you are doing is fine tuning a bad habit. The biggest improvement I see in Pointer offensively is that he is finishing simple when the play calls for it; previously most of his drives were highlight reel attempts. Hard to argue against Harrison as MVP but Dom is running a legitimate 2nd.

I asked a few months ago about Dom learning to be a bank shooter. My suspicion is that Dom has small hands and has difficulty getting control and touch bringing the ball in to shooting position. His baseline drives with the option of one dribble in to a bank shot moving toward the elbow could be very effective.

Schmands, small hands... No disrespect, but that's nonsense that his hands have anything to with his shooting. He just has terrible form; plain and simple. His elbows and hands are all over the place. All he has to do is have someone re-teach him the basics of shooting.

Dom isn't a good shooter because growing up it was something he didn't need to do. He's been this athletic through his entire life, and if you go watch his old high school mixtapes, no one was strong or athletic enough to stay with him and he just bullied his way to the rim.

You're right, I was making a very wild assumption, and very well could be off. I want Pointer to be great, and make it at the next level. He's a freakish athlete. I just can't explain why his main next level skill set of dribbling and shooting have not improved one bit since hitting campus.

I certainly was not trying to downplay his contribution to the team this year. In fact he's given us more than we could have hoped. If you read many of the pre-season predictions, many of them predicting success hinged upon Dom taking the next step.

Damn I knew you aren't 17. Now that we know you grew up on the mean streets of Detroit, and are 4 years older.

I think I'll find a bar with a bunch of lonely divorcées tonight and prop my size 17 sneakers up on the stool.

As someone else mentioned, shooting is about form...and repetition. I can't think of to many kids who've gotten to this level of ball and then changed their form. And if the form isn't there, then the kid can take 5,000,000 shots a day and its not going to make much of a difference. Slight improvement possibly. Big improvement highly unlikely.

Reggie Miller had terrible shooting form....and it seemed to work out for him! It's not about the form, its about consistency.

Shooting is like a golf swing, there is a textbook form that everyone should try to emulate, but the bottom line is many people have different hitches and gimmicks, but all the good ones get to the same position eventually.

It's getting to that same consistent release point or point of square-contact that is important. How you get there is personal preference. Some people make it harder on themselves by the form they use.
but it can be achieved in different manners.

Nor did I think you were; I agree he has exceeded my expectations, very much improved.

Lavin says he suffered a strained patella. I bet he's a no go Saturday. Patella is serious and also he's on twitter complaining about the pain 24/7.

The biggest problem I've had with a short bench isn't that you can't win with 6 or 7 man rotation but what happens in case of injury. Now we have two of our best players injured. If we were 5-2, it would be reason to cry over the misfortune. At 2-5, it makes a dark road ahead look pitch black

I think we see less bad form in this era because so many of these kids have gotten such great basketball schooling at summer camps, from AAU coaches, and even private tutors. In a previous era, kids showed up for HS tryouts with some CYO or PAL experience, with lots of raw talent and some with hardly any coaching on fundamentals. Reggie Carter had horrible shooting form, and made it to the NBA, Pearl Washington also, but only briefly.. The lack of a reliable jump shot that they could get off against much tighter NBA defenses helped to do them in. If you remember, Magic Johnson had a horrible push shot from the outside when he first came into the league. His vast ability and size helped him withstand this, and he improved over time.

In college you can get away with bad form relative to the level you are playing at. The better the competition, bad form that results in showing the defender too much ball, starting your shot too low, etc., is harder to overcome.

At risk of being castigated, I must say, injury or not, I can't wait for the door to hit his rear end & he is out of here. Talented, but he's too high maintenance for my blood. He apparently has a different set of rules than teammates & there is always drama with him.
