Jon Rothstein: Mullin Likely To Take SJU Job

The Lavin haters love it. But they are blinded by their hatred of Lavin. This is the WRONG move, if true. Not cut out to recruit or coach.

I liked Lavin and didn't want him fired.

I am happy with this news.

You can't say he's not cut to recruit or coach. He IS basketball in every way. He IS NY in every way. Not sure how you can make your statement with such assurance.

Also included in the CBS link from the original post, which I think we all knew already:

Sources say it's highly unlikely that Rysheed Jordan and Chris Obekpa -- two players who started this year for the Red Storm -- will wind up returning next season.

Jordan is delusional and Obekpa will rot away on someone's bench for a year.

All the best to them but we're moving on.

Opekpa is heading to Colorado where he can get all the pot he wants

Doesn't sound like finding a supplier is his problem.

If a kid has NBA aspirations, they would be foolish not to realize what they could learn from this man.
Now let this thing get solidified, and then start to build an all star staff. If the old want to stay, good but if they don't then don't let the door hit you in the butt as you leave.

Still mullin this one over.....

Oh hell, this is great.

Until it's not. But buzz is what college bball programs need to entice 16-17-18 year olds.

Chris Mullin will have on his bench whomever he needs to recruit and/or do the proverbial "xs & os" - I don't see that as an issue - the benefits of a Coach Mullin far outweigh any negatives imho

Chris is a guy that probably a lot of HS coaches in the area grew up idolizing (like Mike Vaccaro wrote that he did).

A lot of guys on this board grew up drinking with him at Jpods or Gantry's but that's for another thread.

All kidding aside, I really respect that he comes back to our school, a New York guy finally committing to turn a NY program around or at least give it a go. Too many slick Rick's talk about it and never mad it happen. I will give my full support to someone like him.[/quote]

Can you explain yourself as to "not cut out to coach or recruit". How do you know this, am not saying your are wrong as I have questions, you stated it as fact. Thx

At this point, would be a total embarrassment for the university if he turns it down. That said, I'm sure he wouldn't put St. John's in that position; must have indicated he'd be willing to accept if offered.

And you know this how ?

Good question, it is as irresponsible to say he can't do it as it is to say he can. Let's all just wish him luck. If it was Mass or Cluess I'd have bought UCLA season tix, plenty of seats available, right '72? Though maybe not next year after the Sweet 16 run.

If we can't give our all time Best a chance, then what good is a St. John's education.
Worth the leap of faith this Holy Week.

Given the state of the team he inherits, Chris probably has a year to get his bearings.

Psyched!

Ok, we all know the pluses of this. Definitely a feel-good day for st John's fans, except the terminally cranky.

Now show me the staff.

Agree man!
if people dont know that pic from paultz that looks to be 1 of our next coaches who happens to be btw have been recruiting diallo

Is that Matt?

As I went on reading other posts my ? went answered. Bring it home mullin.

I preferred an experienced coach, but I am definitely all in on Mullin. I am especially excited to see the staff.

I think our first priority should be to reclaim Brandon Sampson. From everything I have read, beyond the talent, he is a high quality kid.

Regarding Jordan and Obekpa, I am torn. On one hand, I would hate to be in the basement next year. On the other hand, these two kids will not fit the mold when it comes to the type of personality Mullin will want.

A bold and decisive move, if true. The former administration would have thunk on this for weeks before making a choice. Hopefully he can round out a staff and get back in the game with the recruits that are still available. Its like the old days when the Big East was a new league and a gym rat named Chris Mullin came to SJU. It certainly has generated a lot of excitement. Who says you can never go home?
