Jon Rothstein: Mullin Likely To Take SJU Job

I'm skeptical because of his lack of experience but I welcome Chris with open arms.

Now let's get the best recruiter money can buy.

I hope I'm terribly wrong, but I see this as a gimmicky hire based on nostalgia and wanting to make a big splash. Not a diligent consideration of all of the possibilities.

Respect Chris Mullin as a person and he's one of the best ever at St. John's, but who knows whether this will work. We needed a sure bet. Just because Fred Hoiberg did it in Iowa doesn't mean it can be done in New York. Again, I hope I'm wrong.

Unfortunately I'm getting the same feeling. Then again, no perfect candidate existed

You know what would be a far worse reunion, Dave Leitao to Depau..... Oh my.

this hire makes no sense to me. Most of these high school kids have no idea who Mullin even is. Why can't they just make a hire based on who is the best coach, not who played for the school in the 80's. He's never been a coach and he somehow gets this job, unreal

Today for me has been a microcosm of many years as a St. John's fan. Early today - depressed to hear about Danny Hurley's extension. Then, nausea set in when it appeared we were headed towards a Masiello hiring. Now, I'm incredibly excited over the prospect of Chris Mullin becoming our coach. What a roller coaster and it's only 2:30 in the afternoon!!!

Slam dunk hire!!!!! Maybe not right away but in a few years we will look back and all agree this was the turning point for the program

Great news!
I am optimistic.

1) All time great NBA player and college player.
2) By all accounts a great person
3) Any local coach / handler / parent will know him; he's a legend. He garners instant respect.
4) He knows his basketball. This no way he can't. He wasn't uber athletic. He had to play smart to be an efficient player.
5) He was a gym rat - that's a great quality to have in a coach. This guy is going to work hard and have passion for teaching / mentoring / coaching / recruiting and most importantly, winning.

Great hire.

Unfortunately I agree. Lots of concerns and issues if its Chris.

Finally, after 25 years, we don't have a coach who will talk about St. John's tradition, he IS St. John's tradition.

I am sure as heck this is going to work out. I'm glad there are doubters here, because when it's turned around it will be that much sweeter, and you will all be on board.

A great day for SJU fans - all of us.

Also a straight talker, no more BS like the last 3!
