Jon Rothstein: Mullin Likely To Take SJU Job

If true, this is one guy that will reunite us.
a former pro like Lapchick that might propel us to where we all want to go.

Finally, after 25 years, we don't have a coach who will talk about St. John's tradition, he IS St. John's tradition.

I am sure as heck this is going to work out. I'm glad there are doubters here, because when it's turned around it will be that much sweeter, and you will all be on board.

A great day for SJU fans - all of us.
Also a straight talker, no more BS like the last 3!

Yep, he'll take full responsility when they lose, and most likely give full credit to the kids when they win.

If true I can't see it as anything but a great day. He has not won as a coach but he has succeeded in every other basketball endeavor. Gotta believe this will be the same. Our basketball IQ just tripled from last week.

Gimmicky? Need an Xs and Os guy? Have we lost our minds?

This is a truly gutsy move and I applaud it. Aside from Pitino or Donovan (neither of whom would come) Mullin is by far the best choice. By far. By a mile. Not even close.

Better than keeping Lavin, better than either Hurley, better that Cluess (who I like very much), better than Masiello (whom I don't like at all), better than Barnes or Marshall or any of the dozen or so other guys who have been speculated on this board -- none of whom care about St. John's or could find Utopia Parkway with a GPS.

Is this hire a guarantee of success? No. But it is a state t that we are willing to risk being bold, that we are shooting for something better than just being mediocre, that we want to be a force again. And it is a statement that we are willing to trust our grelates to player -- a NYC guy and a Johnnie.

Now let's go!

This!

I'm just glad I know Chris will bring in shooters and actually know how to utilize them.

We won't thumb our noses at the Matt Ryan kids anymore.

@GaryParrishCBS: I have no idea if Chris Mullin will work at St. John’s. But I questioned the Fred Hoiberg hire. And that was dumb. So I’ll sit this one out.

Excellent example

No this is wrong! Tripled? No, more like times infinity! ;) :)

+1 Beast

Also, the staff being rumored is very exciting. Slice or Abdelmassih would be huge.

This is the key. Combine Chris's pedigree, knowledge, drive, etc. with 1-2 superstars/rising superstars who can help navigate the day to day of recruiting, operations, etc. - especially early and especially regarding the immediate recruiting landscape.

Exactly my thoughts, wanted D. Hurley thought he was a great fit and a long term solution. But excited about Chris, let's hope for the best.

I share the concerns that others have posted re: Mullin.

However, I have come to the conclusion that, if it doesn't work out, then Mullin just joins the ranks of many other SJU coaches before him.

If it works, I think we all agree it's the best thing that could ever happen to this program. Even more so then if Roberts or Lavin had worked out (and Lavin was not a total failure, IMO). GO CHRIS!

SJU79 on the jungle reporting the ink is dry and contract signed

You know, when you put up that bogus "Mullin to SJU" thread the other day, I was so elated to read the headline, only to be crushed by your cruel hoax. But I now understand that you were simply being prophetic. Forgiven!

SJU coaching job is unique because of its location. You are surrounded by excellent HS talent on the plus side but you have competition for press coverage and drawing fans to games like no other school because of the pro teams.
Mullin would have to help in these areas. SJU got more press coverage the last week than at anytime this year. His hiring would make the Big East and Fox very happy I assume.

Also included in the CBS link from the original post, which I think we all knew already:

Sources say it's highly unlikely that Rysheed Jordan and Chris Obekpa -- two players who started this year for the Red Storm -- will wind up returning next season.

Just look at how this board exploded with the "rumor" of Mullin being hired. We are talking about recruiting and assistant coaches etc. and its late March and our current aspirations this year died a week ago. It is a gamble but where we are in our history needs a big gamble. I also think we all need to be together on the next coach. The only guy who is a no doubt about it unity hire that we will all support and who all the area coaches know and respect is Chris Mullin.
