Jon Rothstein: Mullin Likely To Take SJU Job

Also included in the CBS link from the original post, which I think we all knew already:

Sources say it's highly unlikely that Rysheed Jordan and Chris Obekpa -- two players who started this year for the Red Storm -- will wind up returning next season.

If he leaves, Sheed could be wasting 1-2 years of a valuable education - learning directly from an NBA HOFer who played textbook perfect basketball.

Jordan is delusional and Obekpa will rot away on someone's bench for a year.

All the best to them but we're moving on.

Just look at how this board exploded with the "rumor" of Mullin being hired. We are talking about recruiting and assistant coaches etc. and its late March and our current aspirations this year died a week ago. It is a gamble but where we are in our history needs a big gamble. I also think we all need to be together on the next coach. The only guy who is a no doubt about it unity hire that we will all support and who all the area coaches know and respect is Chris Mullin.
Chris is a guy that probably a lot of HS coaches in the area grew up idolizing (like Mike Vaccaro wrote that he did).

I think with Mullin, you got a shot to keep Jordan. I think Jordan really matured in the last half of the season. He's got to realize that having Mullin as a mentor would be great for him.

I share the concerns that others have posted re: Mullin.

However, I have come to the conclusion that, if it doesn't work out, then Mullin just joins the ranks of many other SJU coaches before him.

If it works, I think we all agree it's the best thing that could ever happen to this program. Even more so then if Roberts or Lavin had worked out (and Lavin was not a total failure, IMO). GO CHRIS!

Lavin might have been a disappointment, but he was in no way a total failure.

SS&G
Someone might talk sense to Jordan and he'll stay. Kids change their minds frequently. However let me pose this question: would Chris want him to stay

You phrased it a better way then I did, redken.

Opekpa is heading to Colorado where he can get all the pot he wants

A lot of guys on this board grew up drinking with him at Jpods or Gantry's but that's for another thread.

All kidding aside, I really respect that he comes back to our school, a New York guy finally committing to turn a NY program around or at least give it a go. Too many slick Rick's talk about it and never mad it happen. I will give my full support to someone like him.

The Lavin haters love it. But they are blinded by their hatred of Lavin. This is the WRONG move, if true. Not cut out to recruit or coach.

if people dont know that pic from paultz that looks to be 1 of our next coaches who happens to be btw have been recruiting diallo

I know there is that "no coaching experience" thing buggin' some o' y'alls, but if I saw us lose Lavin to bring in Masiello, I'd be depressed.

Forget the semantics, this guy is basketball legend. Yeah, he wouldn't be the first to get chewed up by being a coach, but ya know what? I am not going there with my mindset, there are too many upsides. And if this program is forever dormant, at least the greatest took a shot at playing Lazarus.

Respect to Chris and thank you for taking on this challenge. Should be fun too. And to those who worry about kids not knowing who he is, a simple Chris Mullin youtube mix and their "inner circle" of armchair ball boys will be quick to fix that. This guy is a big deal in basketball, simple as that. And I can't imagine with all that he's seen, he's going to have some butchered operation in place.

PS: think he can keep 'Sheed despite what CBS article says. Just a hunch. If Chris talks about the league, I think Mr. Jordan has grown enough to maybe just listen.

Peace.

Now we have someone who actually played in a Final Four rather than dreams about it.

Welcome home Chris, wish you nothing but success.

LET"S GO ST JOHN'S!!!

Forget about them.

Is Keady returning?

Great news on Mullin. The choice that every Johnny fan will support

While I thought hiring an experienced college coach was the right move, I applaud the school for going in this direction. If we go down, we do it with our all time best. If we succeed, it will be even sweeter. I know 1 thing: the type of player and style of play we saw under Norm and Lavin is likely a thing of the past. I expect to see a lot of solid 3 point shooting in the near future, great ball movement, and unselfish play overall. And a lot of quality kids coming here. As for those who say the young players won't know Chris, I highly doubt that. They live and breath basketball. I just watched a special on the dream team on NBA TV last night. A lot of today's players know their history. With Youtube, highlights are easily accessible. Just like Mike Tyson used to watch old fight films with Cus D'Amato, I expect the high school players of today know who Mullin was, and will love to play for him.

If you didn't know that was Matt you shouldn't be posting on this board. ;)
