Joel

CRP immediately singled out Joel as our captain and was going to help reach star status. A good player, but not the star as promised. A lack of mobility hurts him against teams like MQ and creighton.

Zuby has athleticism to play against these teams, but after naming him captain, then sitting him on the bench, CRP could possibly lose this team. So Zuby will sit and Joel will get the bulk of the time.

Yes Joel rebounds, puts up points, but like most players he has flaws. I see his defense holding him back.
Guys, let's relax a little. Zuby gives great energy off the bench and will only improve under Rick, but in no way, shape or form is he better than Joel at this stage. Let's have our captain's back when he's in a little midseason slump. Do you really think if Zuby started teams would game plan around stopping him?

Still time, but SJ had chance to close v top 3 best teams in BE & whiffed, need to embrace and better that sooner than later. College season flies by quickly

Fwiw someone I respect told me Joel is under the weather, but gave it a try today. Din’t take his temperature, but maybe this explains his lethargy.
Let’s hope it’s not Covid. We need a healthy and confident joel back as soon as possible. It’s great that Zuby is playing well, but if we’re going to be successful (which I define as dancing and having a chance to win a game), we need Joel to play well.

Everyone is fawning for Zuby (who I think is coming along nicely). Then he starts and he has a stinker and everyone pines for Joel again. Textbook definition of SJU fan.
He is more active and athletic. If Soriano dug deep and worked harder on defense I wouldn’t have a problem with him. But he’s getting destroyed on defense. And it is in large part about Soriano’s effort playing defense.

Yeah, frankly I am pleased w his progress, but a leap to say he is starting player caliber for solid BE teams. Looking forward to his development this year and summer to see if he attains that.

Soriano this season was overhyped by the media and a lot of that has to do with Pitino shining a bright spotlight on him at that very first press conference as head coach. He's a good player being portrayed as a star. It's a lot of pressure to deal with and it appears to be affecting him, not in a good way.
He spent a chunk or the year looking great. It’s only the last few weeks he is in a funk. Regrettably it cost us some games. With the Soriano of a month ago we win this one.

As I’ve said, we need Joel to play well. When he does, we’re pretty good. The “not feeling good” may be true, but there’s been 3 subpar games in a row now. I recall a similar period last year too. He’s got to suck it up and be the senior captain he is.

Team has other issues, but we can’t afford him not playing top of his game. Zuby’s great as a sub and has tigresses nicely but we need both contributing.

I also remember over the summer when Pitino insinuated Zuby could potentially start over Joel. Obviously that was a coaching move to light a fire under Soriano and seemed pretty odd at the time, but that whole thing makes a bit more sense now.

My issue with Joel is actually with his teammates and not him. None of them seem to be able to throw an entry pass into the low post with any consistency. If he gets it on the block he can look to score or pass out of a double team. It happens so rarely it is ridiculous.

As for Zuby, I wanted him the second his name hit the portal, and love the progress he is making, but make no mistake he has a long way to go to be as good as Joel on the offensive side. He still throws up at least 1 shot a game from down low that touches nothing or just backboard and almost never passes back out regardless of how many defenders are around him.
