Joel

From the article: "Over the past nine games, St. John’s has been outscored by 78 points with Soriano on the floor while it has outscored the opposition by 53 points when Ejiofor is on the court."

131 point difference over 8 games.
Makes sense to sit Soriano the sieve. He’s lazy and a liability the last three weeks.

I was wondering whether half the team also had COVID when RP had it and that it's affected Joel particularly bad, but it looks like he wasn't bad numbers-wise for three games after the one RP sat.

I always knew he wasn't fast, but did he always play uninspired and head up ass? I never noticed it before recent slump.

I see some irony in how much focus for the teams struggles has been on the new players when it’s the guy who stayed who is killing the team.

Didn’t see it coming with him, things are always easier to disect after the fact.

Covid or maybe tendinitis 🤪

Or maybe he should be a pure low post big and the 3's and jump shot were distractions from the fact that Zuby could do a lot of damage to some of the teams we played if he did not have to be held in reserve to back up Joel. Where is Moe Keita when we need him to free our talented but limited bigs to do their thing?

Stick a fork in him. 3-4 weeks ago I was begging people to cheer for him. Now he is just lost. I think zuby is a better player with more potential then Soriano. Let's face it Soriano was a good player on a bad team this year and a bad player on a decent team this year. But if anyone can get through to Joel is Pitino! Zuby deserves to start here on in. Soriano is now a liability.

Joel is NOT the most athletic or fast/quick player, but he has shown over the past 3 seasons that he more than serviceable, and can be a major factor if utilized properly and if he has his head on straight.

The main issues I see at this point are:

- lack of any of our players (w/ the rare exception of Dunlap, Conway last night) to even try to get him the ball
- his lack of demanding the ball and overall apathetic approach and lack of hustle and aggression; he does not even rebound as he had been for much of the past 2 years
- his poor hands and lack of finesse when he does get it
- lack of play calling for him

I think the first 2 are the most serious issues, and it looks like he's checked out at this point. It is astonishingly perplexing to me to see what has happened to him and his devolution as a useful player. He is obviously frustrated, as exhibited by his penchant for chippy play and whining on the court to other players and refs...

There’s more going on here than we know. How does Joel go from the heights of praise that Coach threw on him to basically calling him a lazy bum? There’s a physical or psychological component to this situation. I’m not ready to bury Soriano yet.
