Joel

Soriano is a very good "TEAM" player. He needs his teammates to bring out his best by playing better themselves.
How about he comes to play and makes his teammates better? That’s what your best player is supposed to do. Laying back and waiting for others to bring out the best in you seems, well, not to make much sense. He played much better last year, was that due to the fine play around him, because I must have missed that.

Yes.

Seems like Pitino's strategy with Joel is to be publicly critical of him when he is playing well and then expressing confidence in him when he is playing poorly
He is the whipping boy. I’m sure Pitino asked him ahead of time if not was okay and Joel agreed.

He’s a freaking center, man. What do you want him to do go coast to coast?

He aggressively posts up or screens literally every play. He rarely gets anything off the pick and roll in conference play.

aka, Soriano is really feeling pressure
Soriano seemed down during pre-game press conference. So, don’t doubt he is feeling pressure. Hell be back.

Pitino’s portion of the press conference was very interesting…repeatedly highlighted the consistent upbeat attitudes of DJ and Zuby and bemoaned the up and down moodiness of other players (no one in particular) said he wanted 13 Zuby’s

Joel Soriano is like a box of chocolates......you don't know if you going to get a Bob Lanier or a Tom Baine.

Respect what Joel brings, but the only thing I dont like is how often Joel gets into personal funks on the court and shuts down. If this happens early in a game where he doesn't make shots, gets called for foul or opponent gets better of him, he can go into his sulking and head down or shaking or getting chippy when he's getting beat by his guy.

I bring this up not to pick on him, but more so to point out that you'll often hear coaches talk about what they look for when recruiting a player and they watch the court demeanor. What I noted above would be examples I picture that a coach would get turned off by.

Zuby has proven for once and all that he deserves to get far more of Soriano's minutes. He's just a better player in every sense.

Zuby is fun to watch and never stops moving. Best part of today’s game was watching the lineup with Wilcher, zuby, Dunlap, and Taylor (I don’t remember the 5th guy, maybe Ledlum)—all guys who could be here next year. They played with such great energy in D and moved the ball on O. Not sure what the +/- was when that lineup was on the floor, but they looked really good together.

Bittersweet milestone for Soriano. Congrats to him on becoming the 53rd player to score 1000 career points in a SJU uniform.
He’s been in major funk and he will be the first person to admit to it. Hope he snaps out of it sooner than later.

He did play well in the first Nova game, so let's hope that gets run back.

Soriano this season was overhyped by the media and a lot of that has to do with Pitino shining a bright spotlight on him at that very first press conference as head coach. He's a good player being portrayed as a star. It's a lot of pressure to deal with and it appears to be affecting him, not in a good way.

CRP immediately singled out Joel as our captain and was going to help reach star status. A good player, but not the star as promised. A lack of mobility hurts him against teams like MQ and creighton.

Zuby has athleticism to play against these teams, but after naming him captain, then sitting him on the bench, CRP could possibly lose this team. So Zuby will sit and Joel will get the bulk of the time.

Yes Joel rebounds, puts up points, but like most players he has flaws. I see his defense holding him back.
