SJU was once the leader in the Gathers recruitment and we saw how well that turned out
I'll get excited when he signs a LOI
How convenient for you to use Gathers when we've been leaders for several others and have landed 'em. Not to mention, Gathers actually committed to St. John's prior to reneging.
You also have to remember that Gathers is actually a kid from the south. Lawrence is a New Yorker (the same area, in which St. John's resides). Does it mean we'll land him? Not necessarily. But considering one player is originally from the Johnnies' backyard versus another kid being from the deep south is quite different. Some of you allow emotion to dictact the train of thinking.
I'll agree that I'll also get excited once he commits and signs an LOI to St. John's.
It wasn't a slight on the coaching staff. I'm simply stating that it's not worth getting excited over a HS kid who hasn't made up his mind about what college he'll be attending next year.
We've been over this year in and year out. People focus so intently on who we might get in the future instead of appreciating who is currently here. We are in the middle of a season in which the majority of our team is underperforming and we're talking about a 17 year old tweets.
I know it wasn't a slight on the coaching staff. I took the post for what it was worth.... Conveniently, mentioning Gathers when there were others whom we've landed that mentioned we were out in front or amongst the leaders for their respective services.
There isn't anything wrong with looking at the future. Recruiting is the main lifeline of a program, and when you have a top 10 talent who could be on the team a season from now, then you can expect some folks to get excited.
The way we're currently performing shouldn't stop fans from getting giddy about the prospects of landing Lawrence (of course, I won't get excited until he's officially signed with the Johnnies). This goes back to what I stated about some posters allowing their emotions to dictate their train of thought. By the way, the tweet wasn't by Lawrence. Zags was the one who tweeted it.
You're right, there is nothing wrong with keeping an eye towards the future. But a lot of fans on this board are doing nothing but that. Every year is the same thing. "If we can get this guy, then we will be great." "If we sign him, we'll be over the top."
Let's take last year for example. We signed a questionable player in Orlando Sanchez. We're seeing how that turned out. They signed their PG of the future in Branch. Only problem is Lavin doesn't play him. And we pine and pine for these guys because our fortunes will change with them on the team. Yet, it doesn't seem to be happening. So as I said, let's focus on getting the players on our team better and salvaging this season.
I'd love to see Lawrence and Jordan sign with St. John's. From all accounts, they are really good players and may have a great career ahead of them. But they are a distant thought for me. We've been through this before with countless recruits and sometimes we get them and sometimes we don't. But I think it's safe to say that no one player is going to walk through that door and save SJU. We've been through this and seen how it worked out.
