Jermaine Lawrence, PF (Cincinnati)

“@SLAMonline: King From Queens: Versatile, silky-smooth swingman Jermaine Lawrence is ready for the next step:http://t.co/JDI0LLO3 @mainestory”

Would he be our first 5 star recruit ever? Man we need this kid...especially if D'Lo wants to leave. Imagine if somehow D'Lo stays, Sampson keeps improving and wins ROY, we land Lawrence, then we have an improved Branch, Greene, Garrett, Pointer, Obekpa, and pure shooter Hooper?! Man...that team would really be nasty. If I were Lavin I would show him that potential lineup and tell him it's much better than Cincy, UNLV, etc. he must be pitched as the missing puzzle piece that makes it all come together for us. He clearly has a lot of pride in being from Queens and watching the team all his life. I really hope his family is going to tell him it's a no brainer to stay home.

I can name several 5-stars that have signed with St. John's in the past 15-20 years.

Felipe Lopez, Zendon Hamilton, Ron Artest, Erick Barkley, Omar Cook, and Darius Miles (who flew the coop to the NBA straight outta HS).

Heck! Norvel Pelle was considered a 5-star player, per Rivals.

Before Rivals and the Internet there were more that would be considered 5* today---LeRoy Ellis, Tony Jackson, Malik Sealy, George Johnson, Reggie Carter, Chris Mullin, Walter Berry.

You can toss in Robert Werdann in the 5-star chatter, as well. I do recall him being a top 20-25 player in HS.

Rob was our poor man's Bill Walton. His dad, a retired cop, worked with my brother-in-law. Instead of hitting every bar this side of Brooklyn like Chris Mullin, Ron preferred to play his acoustic guitar in his room, meditate and chill. How is that for chatter?

McKoy was either the #1 or #2 rated HS senior.

What a disappointment
McKoy was one kid who never developed at St John's

Does anyone know how Pope John was able to get Jermaine Lawrence or Bryce Aiken? My brother played soccer there two years ago and at that time they were not known for their basketball.

My high school, Vernon, plays them twice this season and I don't remember a time when we played a team with that much talent. Seems a little fishy that two players that talented want to play at Pope John in Sparta, NJ. Other top programs in NJ and NY are much closer to home.

Didn't they bring in Willis Reed to work with him?

Great memory.
Willis was on the staff a few years back then.

This would be a program changing get especially if D'Lo stays. Not busting out champagne yet, but hopefully sources are right!

Was just about to post this. I wish he would just stop misleading people.

So he has "sources" that no one else has? Please.

SJU was once the leader in the Gathers recruitment and we saw how well that turned out

I'll get excited when he signs a LOI

How convenient for you to use Gathers when we've been leaders for several others and have landed 'em. Not to mention, Gathers actually committed to St. John's prior to reneging.

You also have to remember that Gathers is actually a kid from the south. Lawrence is a New Yorker (the same area, in which St. John's resides). Does it mean we'll land him? Not necessarily. But considering one player is originally from the Johnnies' backyard versus another kid being from the deep south is quite different. Some of you allow emotion to dictact the train of thinking.

I'll agree that I'll also get excited once he commits and signs an LOI to St. John's.

Even if he does sign who cares? The NCAA might find something on him, I don`t trust those scum and never will. I`ll only be happy when he`s on the court playing.

Gotta Love that last line in the interview- hope we get him, sounds like a stand-up kid. Not a true post so hopefully the guys on here temper their expectations as an enforcer down low.

It wasn't a slight on the coaching staff. I'm simply stating that it's not worth getting excited over a HS kid who hasn't made up his mind about what college he'll be attending next year.

We've been over this year in and year out. People focus so intently on who we might get in the future instead of appreciating who is currently here. We are in the middle of a season in which the majority of our team is underperforming and we're talking about a 17 year old tweets.

I know it wasn't a slight on the coaching staff. I took the post for what it was worth.... Conveniently, mentioning Gathers when there were others whom we've landed that mentioned we were out in front or amongst the leaders for their respective services.

There isn't anything wrong with looking at the future. Recruiting is the main lifeline of a program, and when you have a top 10 talent who could be on the team a season from now, then you can expect some folks to get excited.

The way we're currently performing shouldn't stop fans from getting giddy about the prospects of landing Lawrence (of course, I won't get excited until he's officially signed with the Johnnies). This goes back to what I stated about some posters allowing their emotions to dictate their train of thought. By the way, the tweet wasn't by Lawrence. Zags was the one who tweeted it.
