Jermaine Lawrence, PF (Cincinnati)

For the guys who have seen him play: Is Whitehead really that good?

I'm very skeptical of anyone coming out of the PSAL. The quality of play there is questionable. Any kid with real talent seems to transfer to a place where they will get better coaching and see better competition. JW doesn't have nearly the hype that Lance Stephenson did---and he turned out to be a mediocre player.

Whitehead is really good. I thought he was a player that was just physically stronger than kids his age when I first saw him.. But he gets better every time I see him. Hate our chances with him.. But do love his game.

He'll decide in a few weeks. LOL Actually, I'm not sure when he'll commit. But, we've heard about late commitments turning into early commitments. Regardless, we're in very, good position.

Per Zags....

The 6-10 Lawrence recently cut his list to St. John’s, Syracuse, UNLV and Cincinnati and will sign in the spring.

“He could be very good but more than anything else, he needs experience, he needs playing time,” Konchalski said. “He needs a lot of repetitions on the court in situations. He’s gotta learn to play hard all the time. When he does, he can be really a factor on the boards, especially on the offensive boards. And he changes ends as well as any big man you’ll find. He’s gotta build up his strength, his stamina and learn to play every possession.”

Sunday, Dec. 16 Pope John XXIII plays Roselle Catholic at West Orange (N.J.) High School at 3:30pm

May be a good idea for a field trip to show Jermaine that we very much want him on our team next season.

Jermaine Lawrence will visit Cincinnati officially Friday and St. John's will be next, I'm told. #stjbb #collegehoops

It will be great news if he decides to take an official to us. Hes been on campus a few times already.

I think he's doing it to give Lavin the verbal in person.

Why do you say that?

Savino of Cincy went to his game yesterday, although Jermaine didn't play due to injury.

I definitely don't see him being a lock for us.

Not a lock, I agree but what conference is Cincy selling JL? Big East? ACC? Conference USA?

I'm playing devils advoicate here, because I do think SJU is a better fit.
But Cinn can tell him it doesn't matter where they're going because he'll play in the Big East next year, and be in the NBA by the time the conferences sort themselves out.
Plus they'll tell him he gets major minutes from day 1, where as at St Johns he may have to compete with Sampson and and an upper classman in Garrett.

Garrett? I do not think so!

Don't think a top 20 player is going to be scared off by Amir and if he is as good as his ranking could start alongside JaKarr.

I heard his mom is fond of the Johnnies (she could also be fond of Cincy, but who knows). Hopefully, that is still the case, and it sways him towards us.

If I were Lavin I would make it simple and say 1) You get to stay home and be a part of bringing our program back 2) You will be the player that takes us from a very talented good team to a top 25 team and deep NCAA runs (if D'Lo stays). We definitely aren't a lock though...Cincy is #11 and just went to a Sweet 16 so they can easily hold that over us.

He did an interview for 247sports, BearcatLair:

On Cincinnati: Everything went "nice," liked the love from the fans. Coach Savino (UC assistant?) has been recruiting him since sophomore year and has done a good job. Thinks its good that other NYC guys are comfortable at UC. Sees familiarity with them since theyre from NYC also. Prefers to play the three (SF). Says that they have Titus Rubles who does similar things to him and he can see the fit.

Last line on St. John's:

“It's tough for me because St John's is basically my home town,” Lawrence said. “With the three schools I have the decision is going to be tough. I'm just looking forward to the upcoming St John's visit.”

This is from a UC reporter so you expect pro-UC comments, but that last line he added there is very good.
