James Jones - Next Coach (oh boy)?
If he is the hire they better put together a monster recruiting staff
Given the date and the state of our program, I would expect a thin pool of candidates. It's another by products of this abysmal process.

Rasheen will come.

I feel like Borman and Hsu won't want any part of the shitshow.

Welcome home, Tony Chiles?

If this isn’t a Cragg hire and he feels marginalized, that would certainly hurt our chances for Borman.

+1

At this point, I am sure Cragg has advised Borman not to come here.

I like Tony Chiles. At the end of the Lavin era, he was the only one working. That said, I would not consider him a comparatively strong recruiter. Who did he bring here?

You would hope after yesterday and the ensuing fallout that Cragg, Booby G and Oliva would be having serious discussions about how to move this forward by this point. If the the board, President and the general council want to lose the only shot we have at being relevant any time soon they keep doing what they are doing and Cragg leaves. If they are taking this at all seriously they would have called Cragg in this AM, given him the autonomy he needs to run the program and move it forward while putting it in writing. Cragg could then tell the candidates what has occured and implement a plan going forward. If it stays as is how can this school move forward at all?

Sorry I was thinking of Shaheen Holloway. Been a very long day

Just sitting back and watching the ship sink its pretty sad actually. At the beginning of this search when I had hope I would of laughed at Jones being the new HC. After the Repole interview I get it now. Most coaches with secure jobs arent going to risk coming here, I dont blame them. This school will never move forward until the old guard dies off. Under those circumstances im willing to give Jones a chance, what other choice do we have as fans. His resume is not great so the concerns by most are warranted. The Ivy league is not terrible especially the last 10-12 years its been solid minus Dartmouth and Brown. The fact that he now has scholarships and less academic standards should make it easier for him to recruit imo. Hes shown a pretty good eye for talent these last few years. Up until a few years ago you had to win the reg season title to make the dance and thats tough to do. His last 8 years (since 11-12) have been solid. He is 153-92 over that time span thats a .601 win %, at this point we could do worse. I mentioned Jordan Bruner as a grad transfer earlier in the season maybe he can bring him in. Its a shame its come to this but if a billionaire donor cant change things what chance do we have as regular folk. Im going to root for the team regardless, just from home until I see what Jones can do.

The next chapter in this sorry tale of ineptitude is bracing for more players jumping to safety elsewhere and ultimately tallying up the losses.
The trade-off will be St. John's will be a 'great' place for 'walk-on' the next couple of years.
Lol.

Given the state of SJU affairs, which is that any opportunities to hire "sure things" passed a few hires ago, James Jones seems like a solid choice to me. He's consistently had his teams near the top of the league (which tells you he can coach), has been there a long time (which shows you stability), and he's a Long Island guy. Given our last four coaches (and five of the last six, really), our fans may be underestimating the plus of having a head coach who can actually, you know, coach.

No question he will need a couple of recruiters on staff since the Jimmy's and Joe's matter and not just the X's and O's. But to my mind definitely a better hire than Porter Moser (one hit wonder) or Boynton (not even one hit).

I agree not anybody's first choice, but not a bad choice either.
Why the hell did they hire Cragg if they weren't going to let him do his job?? Assume they could have gotten a cheaper figurehead.
I could easily support any of Martin, Boynton or Anderson but hard to think of this as anything more than a wish and a prayer hire.. really depressing days in Johnny land.
Cragg had to make sure he had full control before taking this job.

I doubt they told him beforehand that he would be blocked at every turn by a guy who formed his own list based on the tournament games he managed to find on TV the past two years.

Porter Moser would have been a significantly better hire than Jones and it has very little to do with the Final 4 run. MVC is a significantly better conference than the Ivy League and he had rebuilt ULC from the bottom. Not just 2018, this year won a share of the MVC regular season. Best recruiting class in MVC with 3 legit kids coming in.

This is not a better hire than Porter Moser.
