James seems enthusiastic despite the turmoil

Something important that few (besides Cragg) seem to ask is, how BAD were these guys just a few years ago?

16 years into his head coaching career, Jones won his conference tournament 0/16 times, and won the regular season 1/16 (NIT auto bid- his only NIT appearance). Again, that is in a terrible 8 team league.

Overall, that's finishing in first place 1/32 times when the average would be 4/32. He was one of the WORST coaches in all of D1 (354 teams) going by those stats. There is no way anybody could argue against that.

How did coaches like Tim Cluess or the Hurley brothers look a few years ago? Absolutely night and day. No comparison whatsoever.

Yes, his past 4 years were better, but is that simply because a player or two stepped up (which it sounds like going by these posts)? The law of averages says he was WAY overdue for that to happen. Nearly every team in the country, even the worst ones, eventually have a player or two overachieve and make some noise. That doesn't make the coach a good coach.

As I said, I don't even know if there is another coach out there who has a better resume than him at this point. What an incredibly depressing situation. I hope to God we don't offer him a stupid contract without an easy exit 3 years from now.

The expectation, according to sources, is if St. John's offers Yale's James Jones the vacant head-coaching position he would say yes. After 20 years in Ivy League, would be ready for a new challenge. #sjubb[/quote]

Please get frick and frack away from campus and take away all electronic devices.

Prerequisite for the coaching job is accepting it.

So I guess right now the best thing they can do is get a yes...the guy is totally uninspiring.

The Ivy didn't have a conference tournament until just a few years ago.

Gross negligence. The school has gone to sh*t to begin with. This is the icing on the cake. F these spineless scumbags.

It hurts me to admit this, but part of me would want Jones to fail here if he's a Bobby/Oliva hire. I don't want either of those two clowns the satisfaction of picking a successful coach.

You won't have to hope. It's a guarantee.

Thank you. Nice post, Adam.

It is exactly why he is a cheap, last option at the end of an abysmal job search.

Where is we are sju?

I get what you’re saying but couldn’t bring myself to do it. You won’t be alone.

It's a pure panic move if it occurs.

Repole backlash, the turn downs and the Cluess thing has made them skittish. And now they just want someone to say YES. Anyone and claim victory.

Thanks, I wasn't aware, but regardless that doesn't change anything.

During that 16 year period, he finished as the outright Ivy winner (1st place) 0/16 times. Two of those years he finished tied for first. Assuming only one other team tied him for first place, that's 25% of the conference.

Still well below average for an Ivy League coach.

To his credit, he has consistently finished as a top half Ivy league team (typically 3rd or 4th place). However, that is most likely due to Yale being one of the best couple Ivy League schools. Most Ivy League students/ student athletes would choose Yale over almost any of them. It is my belief that he likely had above average Ivy talent simply by being at Yale, yet could rarely leverage that to better than 3rd/4th place.

If the Repole interview is in their heads, then they should go big. Shut us all up by going out and making a splash. Go back and offer Hurley $4 mil. Sit down with Frank Martin and Mike Anderson. Call Russell Turner (can't believe he wasn't even mentioned!).

If there skittish about the interview, this move does not help them. Only proves Repole's point and increases the fan's venom.
