James Jones - Next Coach (oh boy)?

We are a national laughing stock. A once proud tradition that was brought down with hire after hire who did not have the full support of the University. They can give all the moral support they want but to be a player in major college sports they need to put serious $$$ behind the program.

Joes is a great coach in my mind, he is a NY guy but he’s not the hire that jumps out at people. Not the hire that St Johns fans need and not going to be able to get players here late in the recruiting process that will have this team competitive in three years. It’s rebuilding from the ground floor all over again. For the 4th time in 14 years.

They should’ve hired Dan Hurley 5 years ago. Instead decided a legend with zero coaching experience was the better candidate.[/quote]
________

Yep, the new inexperienced President of StJohn's made the mistake of hiring the past playing legion with no coaching experience to coach in a competitive conference but it should also be noted that overwhelming majority of posters on this site supported and cheered that decision.

30 years ago or so, I had a friend who was a big Manhattan Jaspers basketball fan who would proudly talk about Manhattan's basketball past and I would politely listen and wonder how fans of the once relevant program lived in the past. Today as a StJohn's fan I feel like the Manhattan fan since StJohn's basketball has, post Louie, been largely mediocre.

About a week ago nobody wanted Cluess today nobody wants Jones. At this point I’ll be grateful if anyone takes this job.

My wife works at City College, so I became familiar with their history. They once had a big time program. Same with NYU believe it or not. Our success in the 80s is starting to feel like a distant memory like these schools had.

This has gone well beyond basketball.
It isn’t one bad decision, it is about proper governance and management. And it has been an issue for decades, from Fr. Harrington’s scandal era to this morning.
This could be a case study for the business school in how to lose media, public, alumni (customer) and supplier (high school and AAU) support. A profile of how to undercut subordinates while making them accountable publicly. A study in strategic planning, infrastructure investment, and cultural development ineptitude from the Board of Trustees. And a breakdown of how to fail in a crisis with poor sales, marketing, and crisis management.
It doesn’t matter for many of us older alumni who is the next coaching name floated. At this point, we will wait for real accountability at the top before investing any more of our emotional, intellectual, and financial energy in our alma mater gone sour.

Maybe not a disaster:

Two of his recent players — Makai Mason, who transferred because Ivy League rules do not allow grad-level players, and Miye Oni — are likely NBA Draft picks this season.

The word is that Jones comes with Coach Mike Krzyzewski’s recommendation; Duke has played Yale three times, with Yale being competitive in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

On court: James Jones’ teams are hard to statistically pin down. The constants have been tough-minded play, good defensive rebounding, and recently, strong shooting inside the arc. The past two seasons, Yale was the 25th best and 12th best shooting team inside the arc nationally.

Jones seems to adapt to his teams, going from a slow-paced attack four years ago — the year Yale defeated Baylor in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament — to a high-speed attack this year to feature talented wing Miye Oni and guard Alex Copeland. Earlier seasons featured strong offensive rebounding. This season’s field goal defense was also ranked the 31st best per KenPom’s numbers.

As I said previously, this guy has won 20 games three out of the last five seasons and made two NCAA Tournaments and even won a game. He wound up being successful at a place that was a basketball wasteland when he took over. He's a New York guy from Long Island and if he can recruit a couple of potential pros to Yale, there's no reason to just think right off the bat that he can't be successful here. As I said, I don't know if he's the answer but if he's pumped for this job after all of the previous bullshit with this boondoggle of search, then God Bless him and bring him in here. He's also five years younger than Cluess and if successful can be here for 12yrs. Let's keep an open mind about this.

So Coach K made a call?

I can't get excited by James Jones either but I know we would be getting a decent human being.
