James Jones - Next Coach (oh boy)?

When Cragg is replaced after he quits how many AD's will that make in the past five years? Coach K will bring his team to MSG to play but it won't be SJU he's coming to play.
Another great job by the board of trustees.

Who will we get? It is, without question, the worst Division-I AD job in the nation.

Correct......with 20 years of documented mediocrity, this was his only chance to make the leap to a major conference.

It's not personal, I don't mean to slight him. This is about the right and wrong way to compete in the Big East, where nine other teams are running organized programs with high expectations.
You nailed it, JF. Cannot have said it better. 'It's not personal, not meant as a slight to the man', it's about being able to compete in a Conference in which ALL the other programs run on all cylinders, totally committed to being the best they can be.
We have not done that for 20 years and will not be doing that for another half-decade at minimum.
Sad days in Johnny Land.
You guys rip a guy you know nothing about except what is on Wikipedia and then say it’s not personal, just comical. I also don’t know anything about Jones so for the life of me I would feel like an idiot critiquing his career. I certainly would not be excited if he is hired but I also will not judge someone I know nothing about.

This is exactly right. Can someone who wanted Cluess explain to men why he is so much better than Jones? The reality is they both would probably fail. St John's has bad facilities and bad finances in a difficult league with an established hierarchy. We are talking about burning tickets over one guy who had a 31% of success vs. another who has a 29% chance. It is all a bit dramatic.

"Damn near done" per the (who the heck knows how reliable) @CoachingChanges twitter account. Happy days.

first word says it all

A week ago, if you had told me that we were contemplating a mid-major coach for this job - Cluess, Odom, Jones, Moser, whoever-- I would have told you I don't even want a mid-major coach's OPINION on who we should hire.

But here we are. We’ve just been turned down by the head coach of Lloya Freakin’ Chicago —after offering to more than double his salary! The head coach of UMBC doesn’t even want to entertain the idea of coming here.

Why we can't find the funds to go after a quality high-major candidate like Frank Martin or Mike Anderson, I don't know.

But I do respect Jones (and Cluess) for being willing to walk into this mess. Both of them are at absolutely no risk of losing their jobs and have nice setups where they are today. I’d be willing to support either of them—or whoever is willing to take on this job—at least for a couple of seasons. It is going to be a thankless task.

I think my favorite part of current events are (1) I still disagree with Fordham96 about everything you can possibly disagree about (and he's still wrong about everything); and (2) MKras and Moose are back.

No doubt the reaction to the assistant coach with local ties will certainly repeat redmen.com history.

OMG he got Dermon Player! SJU is back in business!
OMG he got Fred Quartlebaum! SJU is back in business!
OMG he got Tony Chiles! SJU is back in business!
OMG he got Matt A and Slice! SJU is back in business!

Mainman,
I guarantee you I'm going to be:
James Jones, who is this guy?
to
Uh Oh, we really stretched on this huh?
to
First recruit, this guy is going to be okay.
to a conditional
(if he makes the NCAA in the first 4 years)
BEST HIRE EVER
(if he doesn't)
I wonder whose available, who is leading Hofstra now!

Thanks. But I'll be gone soon enough

Just when you thought you hit rock bottom, this;
Was told Paul Hewitt was very interested in St. John's job, but was waiting to see how things would shake out with James Jones, who many have considered the favorite. #sjub

If we hire Paul Hewitt, my first call will be to the ticket office to tell them to save the postage and not send the renewal form. Second call will be to Seton Hall to buy season tickets.

Cancel tickets yes. There is absolutely Zero appeal to driving to NJ to watch Seton Hall.

People need to stop posting joke candidates because the administration thinks they are serious.

Paul Hewitt, wow.
Hofstra season ticket requests jumped 40% this week
I know you joke but my wife and I discussed Hofstra tickets last night as an option.

At least they have seatbacks.

Hofstra is def an option but can’t hold a candle to the Big East.

According to Jon Rothstein and Zach B, Hewitt is seriously interested in the job
The joke is on US, the fans of the program (those that haven't jumped ship yet)
