Hurleys Stays At UConn; Red.Fans Stuck with M.R.

UCONN doesn't have to match the Laker offer dollar for dollar.

The old adage, "Not what you make, it's what you keep."

California has a tax rate of 50-60% on a $12mm per year salary. He would only keep $6-7mm net. Is that amount worth it?
The top tax rate in California is 12.3%, in CT 7% (with a lower threshold), I'm pretty sure the Federal Tax rate doesn't change by state so the difference is only 5.3%. UConn will not be able to offer 94.7% of what the Lakers are offering.

If you want to make a valid and significant economic argument bring up cost of living. I am positive that I could by my house in Hartford for $400-500K but I could sell it in LA for $1.8-2.0 million. PS I'm only paying $7500 per year property taxes so that's not an issue either, though the new owner would be paying $22,500 if they bought for $2mill and were not over 55 nor moving from another house in California.

I pretended I made $7mm last year in the CT table and $3mm was the tally. No clue if I messed up or they've become prates! Lol.
That's got to include the federal tax as well.

NM I see someone already pointed that out.

While the Lakers are a storied franchise, they are in a shambles.
1. Lebron is almost 40 and probably won't play at an elite level for more than another couple of years.
2. AD often gets hurt and misses lots of games.
3. There isn't enough talent on the roster beyond those two guys to compete with the better teams in the Western Conference.
4. Lebron wants to play with Bronny, who has not demonstrated that he belongs in the NBA let alone waste a draft choice on him.
5. The team never gets a high draft pick making it difficult to build through the draft
6. The team has so much money committed to Lebron and AD it's hard to build through free agency
7. There isn't enough talent on the roster to build through trades

If Hurley really wants an NBA job, he should wait for one where he has a chance to be successful. Fans in LA aren't looking for a rebuild and there isn't enough talent to add a piece or two and compete for a conference championship. I see the Lakers continuing to be a fringe playoff team for the foreseeable future. I don't see them trending toward being an elite team at all. How many coaches have failed in a row in LA.? This is not a good job IMO.
Fwiw-

AD played 81 of the lakers 87 total games this year

They have a couple other good pieces, especially Austin Reaves. They were just in the western conference finals two years ago.

its been reported several times that LeBron is fine with Bronny forging his own path, there’s no guarantee the lakers are going to take him.. and there are other teams who apparently are interested as Bronny had a good combine supposedly. It was also reported that the lakers aren’t considering him with the 17th pick. On the off chance they grab him with a 2nd round, it really doesn’t mean much, second round picks are more often than not next to worthless, especially salary cap wise

LeBron said years ago he wanted to play with Bronny and people still run with it. He’s backed off that notion for a long time now.

And plus the lakers are off LeBrons contract as soon as next summer… yea they’re stuck with Anthony Davis, but there’s worse things than being “stuck” with a walking 24/12 who is a perennial DPOY contender.

It’s really not a bad job at all especially if the moneys right. They are far from “in shambles”. they were for a while. But nah not anymore

It is ironic that we’re acting like it’s impossible the lakers can be successful with Hurley because they only have two stars. Aren’t the Dallas mavericks literally in the finals right now

I find it interesting that when turning down the Kentucky job to stay at UConn, his excuse was that he didn't want to have to move his wife too far from her family on the East Coast. I thought that was admirable at the time, but Is that no longer a factor?

I'm sure it is still a factor, the question is can the factor be overcome for a move to a storied NBA franchise which he's said he'd like to do at some point as opposed to another college job. Also have to keep in mind that NIL has changed the college job in ways that many traditional coaches don't like.

It was a very diplomatic way of declining the job. No need to insult Kentucky fans.

Outside of dramatics and attention, why would you have a team meeting to tell everyone you’re staying?
