Hurleys Stays At UConn; Red.Fans Stuck with M.R.

UCONN doesn't have to match the Laker offer dollar for dollar.

The old adage, "Not what you make, it's what you keep."

California has a tax rate of 50-60% on a $12mm per year salary. He would only keep $6-7mm net. Is that amount worth it?

Well, if he made $7,000,000+ last year (with his maximum $2mm bonus), he paid roughly $3mm+ in CT income tax.

So, the Lakers offer still tops that, even after-tax, but family concerns may well prevail.

Wish him the best, except against us, and hope he stays at UCONN.

That'd also be best for the BEC, imo, and make it very sweet to beat him for an NC, and a couple of BEC Titles in the next few years.

Very true about CA tax rate, but CT isn’t exactly FL either.

Isn't 6.99% top tier income tax in CT, but 13% in CA? Basically 60k more per million. Am I not looking at that correctly?

I think the Lakers have a lot more room in their checkbook to get their man. They could offer 8 years 100 million with some interesting structuring including deferrals that won't be subject to CA tax once he retires. At those numbers be crazy not to set up an annuity.

Lakers have had a ton of coaches - Jackson, Riley, and Sharman stand out. If Hurley has that kind of success he would rank as an all time great NBA coach. Of course in the NBA it's all about having the best players, but still that's a tough offer to turn down.

I pretended I made $7mm last year in the CT table and $3mm was the tally. No clue if I messed up or they've become prates! Lol.

I don't think that his coaching style is a fit for the NBA. I think that his maniacal style would wear think on professional players. I also think that he can't keep raving like a lunatic as he does in the college ranks for 100+ games each year in the pros.

His style works at the college level. He should stay where he is, make more money than 99% of all Americans earn, live a charmed life and be revered at his school. I honestly don't think he would last long in the NBA.

Another thing to take into consideration when anyone argues that UConn will just up their contact to Hurley.

He makes over $5.2 million per (not surprisingly, making him the highest paid employee of the state of CT). But coming in at number two is Gino Auriemma at over $3.2 million.

That is a significant number because the state of CT already pays its basketball coaches roughly a combined $8.5 million per year.

It is hard for me to believe CT can budget much more to pay its university’s basketball coaches.

Really don’t think Hurleys decision will be based on money. Really about whether he wants NBA at this point or not. If (and that’s a big if) he’s interested going that route, Lakers clearly one of two most iconic franchises, hard to turn down if wife signs off.

I was wrong. That was total income tax paid, including Federal. You were right. CT's take was ~$480K.
But, yeah, if the Lakers want their man, they can get him, if it provers to be about the $$$'s.

Yes! I want to see a player pull a Latrell Sprewell on him. Lol

I cannot see that nerdy little dweeb fitting in in LA; he's the opposite of tinsel. LeBron & Anthony Davis won't put up with his whining. I hope he goes and fails miserably.

They can always take 25k away from the football staff salary pool

Also, the school still has to throw additional bad money just to keep that abysmal football program afloat. Especially since they are quite open about wanting to jump to a football conference.

While the Lakers are a storied franchise, they are in a shambles.
1. Lebron is almost 40 and probably won't play at an elite level for more than another couple of years.
2. AD often gets hurt and misses lots of games.
3. There isn't enough talent on the roster beyond those two guys to compete with the better teams in the Western Conference.
4. Lebron wants to play with Bronny, who has not demonstrated that he belongs in the NBA let alone waste a draft choice on him.
5. The team never gets a high draft pick making it difficult to build through the draft
6. The team has so much money committed to Lebron and AD it's hard to build through free agency
7. There isn't enough talent on the roster to build through trades

If Hurley really wants an NBA job, he should wait for one where he has a chance to be successful. Fans in LA aren't looking for a rebuild and there isn't enough talent to add a piece or two and compete for a conference championship. I see the Lakers continuing to be a fringe playoff team for the foreseeable future. I don't see them trending toward being an elite team at all. How many coaches have failed in a row in LA.? This is not a good job IMO.

Apparently, Hurley has scheduled a UConn team meeting for tomorrow morning. Folks on Boneyard all speculating about whether that is good or bad news.

HOF (to be) coaches have a natural talent for antagonizing opposing teams' fans.

Hurley's antics irk me to no end, but gotta say I'd Iove it if he succeeds Rick, here, in a few years.
