Zach: Rick on what D.H. should do
(Apologies if already posted):

Story on Rick Pitino offering his thoughts on what Dan Hurley should do. Co-worker Dave Blezow caught up with him in Saratoga: https://subtxt.to/jgbw

I actually think the Lakers offer of 12.5 mil a year is a slap in the face to Hurley. Monty williams has a career losing record and is making 13 mil a year coaching in the nba.

The Laker offer of 12.5 mil a year is laughable to try to get hurley to make the jump.

10MM is 2x what he makes now, don't think UCONN can do that.
Agreed we are talking rarified air. If the rumors of 12.5M are correct he becomes the 5th highest paid nba coach. The 4 people ahead of him have a combined 11 NBA titles.

Among college coaches that have to rumor their salary, Danny Hurley is currently 6th at 5.5M. The top is Self by a country mile at 9.6M. UConn getting close to the Lakers numbers is no lock. I’d actually think they get some backlash at an offer in the Self neighborhood.

Lamont didn’t spend the money that NY/NJ did during Covid so for Hurley to be highest paid state employee of $10 million that would not shock me. However, would go with them adding tolls back. There would be blowback. In Fairfield County alone, more University of Michigan graduates then UConn. Without Fairfield County supplying tax money the state is West Virginia.

And without nyc supplying jobs to those living in Fairfield county they might as well be living in West Virginia. 😉

Like all good state universities, by reserving a healthy number of seats for wealthy out of state applicants those states can charge full boat for out of state students, and steeply discounted and subsidized tuition for in state residents.

UCONN basketball success, not unlike Michigan, Villanova, Boston College or Georgetown's, has helped improve the academic profile of its student body, even if they haven't enjoyed the same success in decades. Still, cannot confuse UCONN with those schools.

2024 US News Ranking has UConn in front of Villanova.

UConn #58 National University (tied)

Villanova #67 National University (tied)

Oh my. I think you are in love with Hurley. It’s pretty ridiculous at this point.

Villanova was the #1 regional school in the northeast. Father Peter wanted them to meet the requirements of a national university, but I'm not sure if they are focusing on the ranking metrics the way other schools have.

Would venture to guess Villanova is a lot harder to get into than UCONN.

Also, US News prob isn't aware that a great pharmacology teacher at UCONN is now retired.

Methodology metrics continue to change and some of them don't favor universities like Villanova when it comes to things like affordability, social mobility etc.

No doubt, Villanova will play the US News rankings game like most others looking to be considered top tier.

The money isnt much more. Its 12.5 a year for 8 years. If Uconn ups there offer to 10 mil, in 3 years, he negotiates again and will make more then the 12.5 hed be locked in for 8 years in nba.

There is zero chance UCONN can offer $10 mil. The fact that you think that is possible shows you know zilch about this.

If Danny stays and he may he will leave millions on the table.

And if he fails in the NBA, or doesn't like it, schools will line up for him. Maybe he is our next coach. Lol. Shorter commute for mom and dad.
